In the template design method, an algorithm is defined in abstract terms. The template can then be used to create various subclasses to override that abstract behavior. This paper discusses a way in which the template method can be extended to the generation of software artifacts from models. Specifically, this new method will be an amalgam of techniques for applying template design concepts to modeling. This extended method is referred to as the skeleton method and has two major sub-methodologies that compose it. First, skeleton files are created to represent the end artifacts of the modeling language. Second, an interpreter template can be constructed from which language interpreters can be derived. As such, the modeling language can be easily extended to generate software for new programming languages or for new third party middleware. This paper presents two modeling languages which use the skeleton method for model based development.

For future low carbon mobility society, new-type electric vehicles are developed actively in recent period. Those new EVs have integrated power unit which take place of conventional engine, transmission and differential gear components. Additionally it is rather easy to integrate torque vectoring function to those power units using gear sets to control torque distribution between left wheel and right wheel. In this paper, model-based development of an integrated control of front steering angle and torque vectoring differential (TVD) gear system is described. A new control logic was developed using model matching control to let the vehicle yaw rate and vehicle slip angle follow the desired dynamics. Simulation results using a single track model of vehicle dynamics are shown to prove the efficacy of the proposed control. Though, full vehicle model considering all of vehicle dynamics and drive train motion using modelica clarified the problem of this method in actual cases. Finally modified control was developed and confirmed by both single track model and full vehicle model.

The continuously rising trend of complexity in electronics control units for transport vehicles requires a complete new approach of development to handle this complexity. Investing engineering effort to produce tens of thousands pages of native language specification could be irrelevant in the context of the future electronics devices. That is why the model-based development using formalized specification is identified to resolve many problems of the future embedded software development. It is considered to ensure a set of advantages like functional testing at specification level, and some other prerequisites for fast time to market, decreased to minimum number of defects. The current paper examines an exemplary process flow of building formalized specification as well as test specification, up to level of generation of optimized source code for the target system.

This work presents a practical approach of designing a functionally safe ECU for automotive application by implementing the model based development (MBD) methodology. Functional safety (FuSa) in automotive can be achieved by strictly following the processes of electrical and electronic systems development as given in the ISO 26262. The scope of FuSa encompasses the risks emerging from systematic failures and random hardware failures. One approach to mitigate these failures is the model based development (MBD) on which the ISO 26262 provides guidance. This approach enables to model an ECU and accelerates an IP creation by automatic RTL code generation for rapid prototyping on an FPGA level. In this work the MBD is implemented in accordance to the ISO 26262 to design and test a hardware model of an embedded ECU. The embedded Design under Test (DUT) is simulated and its output verified in Matlab/Simulink. Upon successful results, the RTL codes of the DUT are generated for a target FPGA. The RTL codes are simulated and the functionality of the DUT is verified at the FPGA level. © 2023 IEEE.

Research in distributed dependable control systems within the automotive industry is of high importance today. One reason is the introduction of more mechatronical systems. Volvo Car Corporation and the Royal Institute of Technology initiated a joint project in October 2002 to target this technology change. The project was named FAR, which stands for Function and ARchitecture integration. FAR focused on the development of drive-by-wire systems using model based development. The deliveries from the project were a tool chain for automatic code generation from Matlab Simulink and Matlab Stateflow models and also a prototype vehicle in scale 1:5. It was a very successful project and the result was delivered to Volvo Cars in June 2003. The project deliveries have been further developed at Volvo Cars since then. Primarily, a new hazard analysis method has been developed and new fault tolerance mechanisms have been implemented.

Software in the aerospace industry becomes the integral components of modern day avionic systems and plays a key role in conducting successful missions. Further to that, safety critical systems rely on software components where malfunctioning may result in catastrophic consequences. For example, a failure in the software of flight computers or autopilot systems of a commercial aircraft may end in series of damages or even mass of causalities. Increasing competition in the aviation industry forces companies to develop more capable systems in less time with less cost. In competitive market conditions, companies are in the position of having to use new technologies in their product development life cycle processes. One of these technologies used in the aviation industry is the model based development (MBD) technology. The MBD technology has been widely used in the development of airborne software because of the time and cost advantages that it provides to companies. However, although the MBD technology promises to increase productivity, it also introduces a number of new significant issues that need to be considered when it is used for developing safety critical systems. In this study, two of those issues are explained in an example. The first issue relates to the integrity of model when model is transferred from an unqualified tool to a qualified tool and the second issue relates to the comparison between model coverage analysis and structural coverage analysis. These two issues are also among the most questioned topics by the certification authority for the airborne software if MBD technology is used as they may have safety impacts on flight safety and may affect type certification process in terms of software.

Currently, almost all automotive and supplier companies are trying to expand model based development (MBD) for control system development. To shorten the development period, concurrent development of hardware and software is effective. Moreover, the control logic complexity is becoming higher in accordance with the implementation of new sensors, actuators, improved control system performance, and increased the interface with another ECU. One significant process of the MBD is the ECU verification with the plant model installed in HILS. We describe some key points for HILS in Hybrid system development.

Currently, almost all automotive and supplier companies are trying to expand model based development (MBD)([1-4]) for control system development. Conventional development processes depend heavily on actual engine and vehicle testing, which means that control logic design can not start before the hardware is completed. And when performance is not sufficient, hardware and control design iteration is required. To shorten the development period, concurrent development of hardware and software is effective. Moreover, the control logic complexity is becoming higher in accordance with the implementation of new sensors, actuators, and improved control system performance. In turn, this increased complexity results in a huge control logic parameter calibration task. Various studies that use modeling to reduce calibration measurements have been tried. To expand MBD throughout our development process, we require that models are developed in a rapid and timely manner. In this paper, we discuss the concepts of MBD and concurrent development, and introduce some example applications. We also describe some key points for efficient model development.

Grid synchronisation plays a vital role in grid tied inverters where the phase, frequency and voltage amplitude of grid is a critical information. In order to extract this information accurately, an improved technique of single-phase synchronous reference frame phase locked loop (SRF-PLL) is used in grid tied inverters. This method uses a transport delay block and a changed Park transform in such a way that the overall system performs well in frequency varying and harmonically distorted grid. The purpose of this work is to employ the model based development (MBD) approach on improved SRF-PLL algorithm, in order to automatically generate production quality code, increase productivity and shorten the development time of grid synchronisation module in grid tied inverters. The efficiency of proposed development approach is verified, tested and validated using off-line MATLAB/Simulink simulation, hardware-in-loop (HIL) real time simulation, software-in-loop (SIL) simulation. Hardware implementation and simulation results show potential application of MBD applied to improved SRF-PLL in grid tied inverter for synchronisation.
