A dynamic model describing the transfer of mass, energy and momentum has been developed for a rotary dryer. The model is applied to an industrial case, drying of sugar beet shreds at a Danish sugar factory. The model is fitted to plant data and shows a good ability in predicting variations in product quality with changes in manipulated variables and disturbances. A comparison is made, in a simulation study, with traditional feedback control and model based predictive control (MPC) with feedforward action. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Classical model based predictive control for single-phase cascade H-bridge multilevel STATCOM generates a variable switching frequency that produces high frequency harmonics and high stress on the power semiconductor devices. To solve these issues, in this paper is proposed a predictive control strategy operating at fixed switching frequency. The method includes a modulation stage in the predictive controller. Simulation results show increased performance of the proposed control method in terms of current ripple and total harmonic distortion.

model based predictive control over wireless sensor and actuator networks is considered. To deal with time varying round trip latencies and data dropout it is proposed a formulation where the true open loop networked system dynamics is approximated using recursive identification techniques based on the dual unscented Kalman filter. Experimental results using a testbed show the relevance of the implemented approach.

The control of linear interconnected systems has become an area of significant research thanks to its various applications. This paper proposes the determination of a predictive control strategy for linear processes. The main idea is to formulate an approach for designing the model based predictive control (MBPC) for large scale linear interconnected systems. This approach consists on associating a sub-MBPC for each sub-system. In fact, this works introduces a strategy to solve problems caused by the interactions among subsystems. The robustness and efficiency of the proposed approach are illustrated through numerical example.

This thesis builds upon recent studies focusing on modeling, operation, and control of high temperature gas cooled reactors. A computer model was developed, based on mass, energy, and momentum balances of control volumes throughout the plant. Several simulations of the plant behavior were conducted and their results were compared with those from the literature. Proportional control was combined with optimal control to form a time varying, adjustable gain predictive controller which adjusts the proportional gains during transients. The controller was designed to utilize control rod motions and bypass control valves to maintain desired plant conditions. An optimization scheme was introduced to efficiently solve the optimization problem formulated as part of the predictive controller operation. Several additional transients were run to examine the full plant controller performance. Multiple predictive controllers were designed and their performance was compared with a proportional controller throughout each transient. The predictive controller results confirmed the importance of proper selection of the optimal controller parameters, in particular the controller time step size and the horizon time. The well-designed proportional controllers clearly demonstrated improvements in plant performance during short time scale transients, namely a loss of secondary heat transfer transient and a step change in desired power transient. Results from long time scale transients demonstrated the capabilities of the proposed bypass control system to control electrical power production without the need for storage vessels.

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) systems used for heating or cooling buildings, consume a considerable amount of energy. To optimize the energy consumption, the behavior of occupants must be changed. This can be achieved by providing information and suggestions to occupants. A first step is developing of a less expensive and non-invasive measurement system and metering of the electricity and heat consumed. based on collected experimental data, it can identify the parameters of a thermal model of the house. The model obtained will be used to simulate different aspects that can help to reduce the energy consumption. This paper presents a simple solution for thermal modeling of a house which includes experimental identification of the model's parameters. Such data are used to simulate the thermal behavior of the house and to obtain solutions to reduce energy consumption. Non-linear model based predictive control through dynamic non-linear partial least squares

The extension of model predictive control (MPC) to non-linear systems is proposed through dynamic non-linear Partial Least Squares (PLS) models. PLS has been shown to be an appropriate multivariate regression methodology for modelling noisy, correlated and/or collinear data. It has been applied extensively, within a 'static' framework, for the modelling and analysis of industrial process data. The contribution of this paper is the development of a non-linear dynamic PLS framework for applications in MPC. The non-linear dynamic PLS models make use of an error based non-linear partial least squares algorithm where the non-linear inner models are built within an AutoRegressive with eXogeneous inputs (ARX) framework. In particular, quadratic and feedforward neural network inner models are considered. The application of a dynamic PLS model within a MPC framework opens up the potential of using multivariate statistical projection based methods not only for process modelling, inferential estimation and performance monitoring, but also for model predictive control. A benchmark simulation of a pH neutralization system is used to demonstrate the application of a non-linear dynamic PLS framework for model predictive control.

model based predictive control (MPC) is an interesting approach due to its ability to consider the constraints of the controlled system and easily adapt to the future reference changes. In this paper, a novel robust MPC controller is presented, which considers the effect of the Tool Center Point (TCP) estimation errors and the model uncertainties of the mechanical structure. In order to show its effectiveness, its application to the 5R parallel manipulator is detailed. Simulation validation is provided to demonstrate that the proposed approach can exploit all the theoretical capabilities of the mechatronic system. © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2014.

This paper deals with an efficient application of a model based predictive control in parallel machines. A receding horizon control strategy based on a simplified dynamic model is implemented. Experimental results are shown for the H4 robot, a fully parallel structure providing 3 degrees of freedom (dof) in translation and 1 dof in rotation. The model based predictive control and the commonly used computed torque control strategies are compared. The tracking performances and the robustness with respect to external disturbances or model / robot mismatch, are enlightened.

In this paper we describe two classical applications of MBPC which enhance the advantages of the method: feed-forwarding, constraints handling, no-lag error on dynamic set points, easy trade-off between robustness and dynamics specifications. We insist more on the project procedure than on the control algorithms which are presumed to be known from references. Practical difficulties appear to come more from the selection of the model and from the formulation of the specifications than from the strict controller design. To be efficient with a good economic pay-back, MBPC should be used at the optimization level, embedded in an appropriate environment. These requirements nowadays, due to efficient control packages, demand more time and effort than the control algorithm per se.
