In this paper model based predictive control (MPC) is used for torque control of three phase Induction Motor. In conventional torque control methods, a switching table is used for switching of the inverter in order to keep the torque and flux within the limits. MPC can be used to reduce the switching frequency of the inverter along with better torque and flux response. Torque and flux is predicted for next few samples and most suitable sequence is selected which causes least inverter switching. Receding horizon policy is applied in which the first switching state of the selected sequence is applied to inverter. MPC requires complex computations which limits its application. Finally a Branch and Bound algorithm is applied in order to improve its computational cost.

The human circadian pacemaker is a biological timekeeping mechanism that governs alertness as well as many other physiological processes of the human body. It is widely accepted that daytime alertness is maximized when an individual's sleep/wake schedule and circadian pacemaker are synchronized. Unfortunately today's world is characterized by widely distributed activity schedules which often make this difficult. However research in chronobiology indicates that ambient light stimulus can be used to phase advance or delay the human circadian pacemaker. To optimally control the human circadian pacemaker using light, the authors present a model based predictive control system. This approach readily facilitates closed-loop control and elegantly handles the constraints present in a typical human environment, thus has merit for a number of practical applications.

In this paper two control techniques: Finite States model based predictive control (FS - MBPC) and Fuzzy Logic control (FLC) are developed to obtain arbitrary output currents, needed in a variable speed Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). In this study, the simulation performance between FS-MBPC and FLC of the rotor current in a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) with an Indirect Matrix Converter is evaluated. The simulations were carried out with constant shaft speed, and constant ramp speed with arbitrary rotor current references. Both FS-MBPC and FLC showed very high performance, following smoothly and rapidly the current reference with a very low error. The FS-MBPC dynamic response is slightly better than of the FLC. However, fewer mathematical calculations, and less measured data, and fewer computational requirements suggest that FLC can be easier to implement in FPGAs instead of composite microprocessor-based control platforms.

Compensation of cardiac motion during robot-assisted surgical procedures is needed to ensure better quality stabilization. Serial Comanipulation to actively compensate physiological motion is one alternative to common used Teleoperation techniques. In this paper, a l DOF hand-held force controlled prototype is presented. The active part of the instrument moves in synchronism with the heart motion in order to guarantee that the contact is maintained thanks to the application of a controlled force, while the surgeon's hand is in charge to perform the surgical task. It then focuses on a crucial control aspect: there is a lack of a parametric model describing the interaction between the surgical instrument and the heart that would provide enough precision for prediction. Namely, the robot low level controller and the beating heart are modeled thanks to a Locally Weighted Projection Regression (LWPR). The paper discusses how this technique can be used in the context of predictive force control and shows conclusive simulation results.

Robotic assistance to beating heart surgery requires high performance cardiac motion compensation in order to provide the surgeon with enhanced precision capacity. In this paper, serial comanipulation is considered, where a surgeon handles an active instrument which is in contact with the beating heart. The surgeon's hand is in charge of low frequency motions that correspond to the surgical task while the active part of the instrument moves in synchronism with the heart motion in order to guarantee that the contact is maintained thanks to the application of a controlled force. The paper introduces a 1 DOF hand-held prototype designed for active compensation of cardiac motion by the mean of force control. It then focuses on control aspects. Here, a crucial problem occurs: there is a lack of a parametric model describing the interaction between the surgical instrument and the heart that would provide enough precision for prediction. To cope with this problem, a "black box" algorithm is used as a model. Namely, the robot low level controller and the beating heart are modeled thanks to a Locally Weighted Projection Regression (LWPR). The paper discusses how this technique can be used in the context of predictive force control and shows conclusive simulation results.

This paper considers modeling and control problems of the non-stationary nonlinear processes whose dynamics depends on the working point. A hybrid RBF-ARX model-based predictive control (MPC) strategy without resorting to on-line parameter estimation for this kind of processes is presented. The RBF-ARX model is composed of the RBF networks and a rather general form of ARX model, which is identified off-line, and whose local linearization may be easily obtained. A quickly-convergent estimation method is applied to optimize the RBF-ARX model parameters. The modeling validity and the MPC performance is illustrated by an application to Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) decomposition process in thermal power plants.

In this article a control strategy for an induction machine (IM) based electric variable transmission (EVT) for hybrid electrical vehicles (HEV) is presented. Such electrical machines consists out of two rotors resulting in a power split and a decoupling of the internal combustion engine (ICE) speed and wheel speed. The proposed control method relies on a finite-set model based predictive control (FS-MBPC) algorithm to steer the torque of both rotors as well as the flux levelwithin the machine. The advantage of this controller is the inherent feature of field weakening and strong reduction of Joule losses as a result of the optimisation routines within this controller using a cost function. As the focus of this paper is on the control method, simulation runs in Matlab/Simulink are performed to asses the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control method.

A model based predictive direct power control with finite set of control variables for the three phase four switch-based converter B4 connected to an unbalanced grid is introduced. The instantaneous active and non-active powers are outputs of the controlled system. The alternative instantaneous non-active power theory is used that preserves harmonic free grid currents not only for a symmetrical but also unsymmetrical voltage system. Simulation results for the L grid filter are presented and analyzed.

Computational Performance of a Remote Nonlinear predictive controller on a Single Board Computer Applied to a Distillation Process

The computational time in a nonlinear model-based predictive control (NMPC) depends on several factors. For its implementation, very short execution times are required, which translates into specialized and robust computational capabilities. These capabilities can be evaluated using external servers and Single Board Computers (SBCs), small in size, but with important computational features. The present work evaluated the computational time required in the implementation of a remote NMPC for three different models of a distillation column using the Python Gekko library on a Raspberry PI 3B+ board, and using an Aspen Plus Dynamic simulation as a plant through Open Platform Communication (OPC). In total, 9 cases involving between 2229 and 5109 state variables were evaluated, finding that, in all cases, the time needed to solve the NMPC was less than 30 s, with a CPU consumption of less than 50%.
