A type certificate is a design approval issued by the FAA when the applicant demonstrates that an aircraft design complies with the applicable regulations. In prior work, the authors reported a model-based framework for the management of certification artifacts for 14 CFR Parts 23 and 25. The present work extends the transport category model and describes the features added to enable the identification of a certification basis and potential gaps for conventional and electrified aircraft. The regulatory model stereotype developed includes different structural elements and the three categories that trace from paragraph blocks - Regulation Requirement, Regulation Context, and Regulation Test. The automated extraction of certification bases for different aircraft is implemented using opaque actions within the Cameo simulation toolkit within MagicDraw. This is possible because the 14 CFR Part 25 model is enriched with metadata that captures the regulatory classifications, prescribed physical elements and their intended functions. Finally, the present work discusses the challenges encountered while instantiating this framework and automating the extraction of certification bases and gap analysis.

An education system for the United States Space Force (USSF) that is collaborative, comprehensive, and innovative will better prepare young professionals for a career in national space security and defense, which is a rapidly evolving work environment. With the creation of the U.S. Space Force on December 20(th), 2019, now is the time to consider how to establish a more synergistic collaboration between industry, academia, and the Department of Defense (DoD), specifically regarding multidisciplinary, space-related education. Consideration of this approach is warranted since all sectors of the space enterprise (academia, industry, and government) will substantially benefit from this collaboration. In addition, if a new professional development methodology is not implemented, the DoD may face some of the same challenges that existed in the early years of the United States Air Force (USAF) education system in the 1940s and 1950s. This paper outlines: 1) historical challenges encountered in a military education system for a new branch of military service;2) engineering principles related to the concept and development of enterprise systems (particularly education systems);3) the application of those principles in conjunction with exceptional experiential and pedagogical practices;and 4) a broader and more innovative methodology to develop a United States Space Force Collaborative Education system (USSF CES).

Progress toward adoption of model-Bases system engineering (MBSE) is challenged by data transfer incompatibilities between SE and engineering discipline models. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the addition of a translational tool to the modeling Architectures and Parameterization for Spacecraft (MAPS) environment. The translational tool takes information read from system modeling Language (SysML) diagrams and converts it into a representation suitable for the MAPS environment. MAPS users are encouraged to use SysML diagrams to define requirements, physical parameters, and interaction rules. Unfortunately, users need to manually convert this information (SysML diagrams) into MATLAB scripts before any analysis takes place. While effective, this method is time consuming, especially for new users who are unfamiliar with the environment. Past work has shown that the use of translational tools improves the effectiveness of analysis tools. Adding a translational tool enables more rapid analysis of different architectures and allows more users to interact with the MAPS environment. This study describes the creation of a translational tool for MAPS and showcases its effectiveness though the case study.

The design of mechanical systems is a complex process that is often associated with significant time and budget overruns. model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has emerged as a way to mitigate these issues. However, MBSE alone lacks the ability to simulate, analyze and design mechanical systems. Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) treats the parameters of the mechanical system as design variables and uses numerical optimization methods to find the parameters that optimize performance metrics while meeting constraints. However, it lacks the systematic traceability that MBSE offers. This paper proposes a methodology that builds on the Requirements engineering, Functional Design, Logical Design, and Physical Design (RFLP) approach to integrate MBSE and MDO and overcome each other's limitations. The recently proposed Process RFLP is used to aid in the development, enumeration, and selection of design activities involving simulation and MDO. Guidelines for the implementation of RFLP are formulated and presented. The approach is demonstrated through a test case involving the design of a single-aisle transport category aircraft. Compliance with aircraft requirements is verified, and a change in requirements case is presented. The long-term goal is to automate the methodology to enable MBSE to drive the formulation and execution of MDO.

This paper represents an attempt of extend the model based systems engineering (MBSE) philosophy to the process of designing and certifying aircraft structures with a level of detail and scope of modeling that would meet certification requirements. The work will present comparisons, not available until now, between the cost and time required by current design methods and by an integrated model based design method in the case of a particular and important aerospace structural system: engine pylon. Weight and the development costs of the resulting designs will also be compared. It allows us for the first time to view in both qualitative (weight performance), and quantitative (engineering effort) ways the benefits of the integrated model based approach in a highly realistic certification driven structural design case. Along the way, to build the model based integrated design optimization platform (modular automation platform – MAP) used here for this design process efficiency study, quite a number of technical innovations were necessary to make it practical and efficient. The work describes certain number of those innovations too.

The challenge of reducing time and cost of developing aircraft that are also fuel-efficient cascade down from the aircraft operators to aircraft OEMs to aeroengine manufacturers and aero systems manufacturers. The focus of this paper is to address this challenge through application of model-based systems engineering and a simulation drive design workflow on an aircraft engine gearbox housing. A typical gearbox design starts with system level performance requirements such as power requirements, speed, torques and operating conditions. The goal is to design a minimum weight, manufacturable gearbox housing in the shortest possible time that meets the performance requirements. In this paper, authors present a design workflow developed for meeting this goal.

In this era of successive crewed spaceflights, there is a dynamic need for improvement of the reliability and maintainability of the spacecrafts. One of the main drivers for the successful spacecraft is a robust and a versatile propulsion system. The design of a propulsion system requires striking the right balance between performance, reliability, and cost. The key emphasis of this study will be in the context of reliability. This study proposes a model-based framework for the Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) using systems modeling Language (SysML). This framework is exemplified on the legacy rocket engine, the RS-25, formerly known as the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). The objective of using the SSME from the space shuttle era for the Space Launch system (SLS) missions necessitates upgrades to reduce the cost of engine. Further, the upgrades will require the recertification of the engine for crewed launch. The selection of this engine for this study is subsequently driven to benefit the recertification efforts enabled through a model based Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (MBFMECA). Therefore, within the context of model based systems engineering (MBSE) the MBFMECA has been developed and detailed. The proposed framework shall compliment on-going research efforts on affordability of the RS-25 engines.

Advanced digital technologies across engineering and manufacturing must take the U.S. manufacturing ecosystem to the forefront of modernization and Industry 4.0. Many chokepoints impede readiness. Among the most critical challenges is a sustained pipeline of on point, skills-based labor to support underpinning model-based engineering processes and practices. This paper describes an education model that can be replicated geographically to strengthen and grow this foundational workforce. Its threefold approach to energize development of the model-based systems engineering (MBSE) workforce incorporates: systems engineering Technology (SET) curriculum deployed through community colleges;short-term courses for upskilling existing professionals;and consultancy support for both emerging and mature industries.

In order to meet the demands of the current global economy, a study of agile teams at NASA was conducted by the NASA engineering and Safety Center (NESC) to explore how the Agency can become more adaptable and flexible due to several influences, including the maturity and availability of digital tools and NASA's increased reliance on commercial providers. NESC Technical Discipline Teams (TDTs) perform annual studies to understand the needs of their stakeholders, establish a state of the discipline, and inform strategic planning efforts. As part of the 2022 interview series, the systems engineering TDT utilized the dissertation work of Dr. Jackelynne Silva-Martinez that focused on NASA agile teams. The systems engineering TDT partnered with the Software and Human Factors TDTs on the formulation of interview questions and subsequent solicitation of customer inputs, which helped attract diverse agile teams across the Agency. 34 participants were interviewed, including civil servants and contractors, with open-ended questions related to their teams' adoption and transition to agile. Participants were also questioned about their perceptions of the implementation of agile approaches across the Agency. Results showed a consistent framing of agile as incremental knowledge growth, a way of showing progress, and as the incorporation of frequent customer feedback. However, participants emphasized a lack of a common understanding of agile across the Agency, which sometimes caused managers and engineers to be reluctant to accept and support them. Results also showed the most successful agile teams had formal training with over five years of agile experience, used retrospectives, and tailored their agile processes for their specific situation and needs. This paper provides details of the interview responses gathered in the study and suggests actions for NASA to become more agile.

model based systems engineering (MBSE) approaches are rapidly spreading among organizations and industries due to all their claimed benefits over traditional documentbased approaches. Benefits include for instance enhanced design quality of systems, clearer development of system requirements and specifications and improved communications within the design teams. Currently, MBSE methods and tools are mainly employed to successfully develop complex systems, such as aircraft or its components. However, this paper proposes to adopt MBSE also in the design of development systems, which aim to design complex systems. In particular, this paper focuses on the first activities of a typical systems engineering Product Development process: identification of system stakeholders, collection of their needs and development of system requirements. The main outcome delivered from this paper is an architectural framework, i.e. a guideline for the modeling of complex systems. More specifically, the architectural framework is still under development, and hence the current version focuses on the modeling of stakeholders, needs and requirements of complex systems. The focus of the proposed architectural framework is on the agility for the definition phases of complex systems. In other words, it is developed to streamline, improve and accelerate the definition and modeling of complex systems. Details of the architectural framework including the means to represent all the system information are provided. In addition, the architectural framework for the development of complex systems is supported by an MBSE development system, currently being addressed in the EUfunded research project AGILE 4.0. The MBSE development system is presented in this paper together with an example of its application for the definition of complex systems: an horizontal tail plane for a regional jet aircraft, designed and manufactured within an aeronautical supply chain consisting of different companies.
