The paper proposes a visual programming-based methodology for achieving highly flexible geometry modeling, encompassing variations in topology. This approach is designed to cater to the conceptual and preliminary design stages of airframes and their associated systems. This requires a new framework for real time modelling, analysis, testing and continuous integration, which we propose here, using principles from software engineering and a tightly integrated, novel mechanism for geometry-centric design rationale capture, share, and re-use. We show that the visual programming basis of the proposed design philosophy facilitates more organic coupling between rationale, company knowledge bases and the geometry itself (as well as the programmatic recipe that generates it) than more traditional parametric Computer Aided Design (CAD) approaches. In particular, we put forward this framework as a means of enabling large departures from the technological status quo, such as the looming transition to sustainable propulsion systems. We demonstrate some key aspects of the proposed framework through the solution of a well-known structural design problem: a generative-design case study of a motor mount based on a set of complex orthogonal planar lattices. Within the framework, we present the design process of the mounting structure, starting at the levels where the fundamental topology of the structure is defined, through the organic integration of analysis results into the definition of the preliminary design level geometry, to high level trade study capabilities. We also demonstrate how the code and, by implication, the geometry are automatically tested, the proposed framework lending itself to continuous integration, supported also by a knowledge base comprising requirements, rationale entries, and a log of design decisions.

The development of Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) has revolutionized the avionics industry by allowing multiple functions to be present on the same General Processing Module instead of a single function per Line-Replaceable Unit in federated architectures. However, the strict restrictions and expensive verification processes associated with IMA platforms have led to the establishing of standards and guidelines to reduce development and verification costs and time. One such standard is the ARINC 653 Standard, which outlines, amongst others, the necessary data for specifying any ARINC 653 configuration. This paper proposes a model-driven approach for the automated configuration, verification, and validation of ARINC 653-compliant avionics architectures. The approach involves using system Composer and Simulink for modeling and configuring the system, as well as generating ARINC 653-compliant configurations in XML format. The paper exemplifies an expandable pattern for modeling and automatically configuring ARINC 653-compliant systems, highlighting the potential for system verification and validation at both the design and software implementation stages. The results show that model-Driven engineering of ARINC 653-compliant avionics architectures is a viable way to isolate parts of the engineering process and increase the automation and validity of the system.

This paper focuses on an innovative approach for the layout of an airborne cryogenic hydrogen cooling system for an electric power train. With climate change related challenges becoming increasingly severe, the need for low-emission, sustainable air mobility solutions, such as hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, is apparent. Novel technological approaches entail challenges regarding their development processes. Need-adapted systems engineering must assure that a high system of systems complexity can be fully understood down to component level, and all necessary information is captured and properly represented to identify appropriate design decisions as well as critical causal chains. This paper describes the authors' approach to designing a cryogenic hydrogen cooling system for an axial flux motor, destined for aeronautic application. The hydrogen cooling system is designed for operation within a powertrain with the superordinate input parameters chosen such that to fit the typical mission profile of a regional distance aircraft. For the system modelling, MBSE and cognitive mapping concepts are applied, with the objective to evaluate the causal chains and relationships between operation parameters (of the cooling system), and to establish statements about system architecture and component design as well as cooling performance. Thereby, the cooling system behavior is simulated using analytical thermodynamics and fluid mechanics as well as CFD simulations to support the system modeling and causal chain evaluation.

The increase in products' complexity and level of integration lead to significant challenges in all phases of the product lifecycle. The coupling between disciplines presents compatibility and collaboration challenges that must be addressed throughout the development of a product. Indeed, organizational boundaries are known to slow the process of development and lead to more costs down the line. The definition and development of a Digital Enterprise have the potential to alleviate some of these challenges. To that end, this paper details the formulation, development and implementation of a digital enterprise across the lifecycle of a system of interest. Supported by digital enterprise visions from industry leaders, the proposed framework considers the As Designed, As Built and As Used phases of the lifecycle, and then decomposes the system at the product, component and production system levels using the Requirements-Functional-Logical-Physical (RFLP) methodology and model-based systems engineering (MBSE). For the purpose of demonstrating the implementation of the proposed framework, a minimum viable product of a small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is selected, where a Digital Thread is developed to connect the product lifecycle phases. The Digital Thread is implemented by means of a data infrastructure that is managed using a scalable and portable graph database with a REST API that supports queries from applications. The graph database stores the models and their relationships at each revision as layers. The capabilities and benefits of the proposed Digital Enterprise framework are demonstrated by linking the performance of the final physical product back to decisions made during its design and manufacturing phases, leveraging the predictive capabilities and organizational views of the digital approach outlined in this research.

This study introduces a development process of a simulation framework to analyze the driving range for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) under different thermal conditions, utilizing real-world test data for validation. The framework assesses BEVs' range and energy efficiency at ambient and cold temperatures by incorporating battery parameters, motor efficiency maps, and estimates of heating power. The results closely align with real-world test results, with simulation errors within acceptable limits for over 90% of vehicles at ambient temperatures and over 80% at cold temperatures. This accuracy supports the Korean certification organization in efficiently reviewing and screening BEVs for the market.

One promising approach to increase the environmental compatibility of future commercial aircraft is the use of fuel cell systems. In the future, these are to be integrated into the aircraft architecture, for example to supply aircraft systems with electrical power. In this context, one of the greatest challenges is the design of a safe thermal management system (TMS), since fuel cells produce a large amount of heat despite a high efficiency of over 50 %. This paper identifies the relevant interfaces and functions of the TMS using a function-based approach. In the first step, a functional structure of the fuel cell system is created within an MBSE model, which can be used to identify all the key interfaces to the TMS. In the next step, the functions of the TMS are determined. To evaluate the effectiveness of the presented approach in a safety-critical application various architectures from the literature are analyzed. The considered functions and components are compared against the result of the functional design to identify potential blind spots of the different methods and existing literature.

In addition to inheriting concepts and methodological principles from system engineering, model-based systems engineering (MB SE) emphasizes the role of modelling and models in engineering processes. Different types of models are then constructed and used, each being a digital representation of a system that is undeniably partial, but also necessary. It highlights and enables the analysis of certain characteristics of this system, e.g. its behaviour, its functions or its composition to make relevant design choices. Digital Twins are the ultimate representation of a system, expected to be faithful and realistic for the purpose they serve, as well as to be connected and synchronized to the modelled physical asset. Hence, they support stakeholders to manage, train or optimize the target system when implemented and put into operation. However, defining and engineering Digital Twins remains a difficult process, with little methodology available to build and ensure it remains faithful to a continuously evolving reality. MBSE provides concepts and a methodological framework that are well adapted to solve complex engineering problems with many constraints. The next generation of rocket engines, including advanced chemical and nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) systems, will require a new development framework beyond the ubiquitous Test-Fail-Fix (TFF) approach. While acceptable in the past, the significant inefficiencies of TFF have historically contributed to over 70 % of the overall engine development program cost and caused significant schedule delays. Worse, even after the hundreds to thousands of tests performed through TFF, propulsion systems are still responsible for 63% of launch vehicle failures. This is unacceptable to meet the increasing complexity of chemical systems and stringent safety requirements of NTP. It has been repeatedly shown that the primary reason for TFF's deficiencies is due to a general disregard for reliability until testing has begun. Alternative frameworks that encourage reliability have been proposed, but have failed to gain traction for various reasons that includes lack of maturity, and incompatibility with the standard systems engineering process. This paper proposes a new framework, called Reliability-Driven Design and Test (ReDDT), which allows for a significant increase in rocket engine affordability and dependability through early integration of reliability into the systems engineering process. This technique is then demonstrated through model-based systems engineering (MBSE) for an upgrade instance of an RS -25 engine, and the current NTP conceptual design.

Digital engineering currently relies on costly and often bespoke integration of disparate software products to assemble the authoritative source of truth of the system-of-interest. Tools not originally designed to work together become an acknowledged system-of-systems, with their own separate feature roadmaps, deprecation, and support timelines. The resulting brittleness and conglomeration of disparate interfaces in the Digital engineering Ecosystem of an organization drains resources and impairs efficiency and efficacy. If model-based systems engineering were applied to this problem, a complete system architecture model would be defined, and a purpose-built computing system-of-systems would be constructed to satisfy stakeholder needs. We have decades of research in computer science, cybersecurity, software and systems engineering, and human-computer interaction from which to draw that informs the design of a Seamless Digital engineering tooling system, but it would require starting from a clean slate while carefully adopting existing standards. In this paper, this problem space and solution space are characterized, defining and identifying Seamless Digital engineering as a grand challenge in Digital engineering research.
