Control systems rely heavily on the software that is used to implement them. However, current trends in software engineering are not fully exploited in the development process of complex control systems. In this paper, an approach for the model driven development of distributed control systems (DCSs) is presented. The proposed approach that greatly simplifies the development process adopts the function block construct introduced by the IEC 61499 standard and supports the automatic generation of implementation models for many different execution environments. It favours the deployment and re-deployment of distributed control applications and provides an infrastructure for the transparent exploitation of current software engineering practices. GME, a meta-modelling tool, was utilized to develop Archimedes, an IEC-compliant prototype engineering support system. Specific model-to-model transformers have been developed to automate the transformation of FB-based design models to CORBA-component-model based implementation models to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach.

The transition from traditional to Big Data technologies has put new challenges in front of existing database modelling techniques. The 'Design then implement' approach to relational database modelling, could not be fully applied to 'Discover and analyze' databases with rapid data growth. In the context of Big Data, models have preserved a descriptive role: they are used to analyze and understand the architecture of hybrid data structures. From the model-driven Engineering point of view, several questions emerge: Could Big Data and hybrid database models represent a formal specification for a solution, which can be transformed to an executable specification for a specific target platform? Does the refining mechanism have its place in the process of hybrid data structure development? An approach to modelling hybrid databases, based on empirically validated concepts of model-driven Engineering, is presented in this paper. The approach was applied during the implementation of Precision Agriculture Based Information Service (PAIS) application - a web-based service for the collection and archiving of diverse data on crops, and their presentation to farmers.

Semantic Web evolution brought a new vision into agent research. The interpretation of this second generation web will be realized by autonomous computational entities, called agents, to handle the semantic content on behalf of their human users. Surely, Semantic Web environment has specific architectural entities and a different semantic which must be considered to model a Multi-agent System (MAS) within this environment. Hence, in this study, we introduce a MAS development process which supports the Semantic Web environment. Our approach is based on model driven development (MDD) which aims to change the focus of software development from code to models. We first define an architecture for Semantic Web enabled MASs and then provide a MAS metamodel which consists of the first class meta-entities derived from this architecture. We also define a model transformation process for MDD of such MASs. We present a complete transformation process in which the source and the target metamodels, entity mappings between models and the implementation of the transformation for two different real MAS frameworks by using a well-known model transformation language are all included. In addition to the model-to-model transformation, the implementation of the model-to-code transformation is given as the last step of the system development process. The evaluation of the proposed development process by considering its use within the scope of a real commercial software project is also discussed.

model driven development is a promising approach to develop high quality software products efficiently. However, it is difficult to define consistent model with requirements traceability from which generates source codes automatically at the early stage of development. This paper proposes a model driven development method in which requirements specification can be modeled by separating concerns between UI, internal logic and exceptions so that the requirements model can be translated into a design model systematically.

Nowadays power converters are gaining more and more importance due to the increasing demand of energy efficient solutions in industrial applications, renewable energy sources and electrical transportation. To meet this new demand, development cycles must be shortened, without compromising the quality of the control software. This goal can be achieved with model driven development, and it also can make the process more agile. In the presented method, we are using MATLAB Simulink to implement the control related software components. These software modules, such as control loops and state machines can be functionally tested in the Simulink environment, with much better observability than the real embedded software. The embedded code is generated from these models. The embedded code additionally contains the framework, which is providing an interface between the model and the control peripherals and the real time operating system. In this paper we are discussing the process in detail on a frequency converter firmware as example.

In recent years, the growth of smartphone market has led to the increasing development of mobile application. The rapid approach of mobile application development would respond to the market growth. This paper presents a model driven approach for creating preliminary GUI source code of Android application from windows navigation diagrams. The input diagram is converted to XML used as the metadata for model transformation. The final results of XML and Java files will be obtained for each UI layout where the XML file contains UI element information, and the Java file contains the actions. The proposed methodology would promote the reusability due to the use of UI layout template. The automation with model transformation would also ensure the integrity of interfaces generated from the design with windows navigation diagrams.

A framework for data transformation in Credit Behavioral Scoring applications based on model driven development

The preprocessing stage in knowledge discovery projects is costly, normally taking between 50% and 80% of the total project time. It is in this stage that data in a relational database are transformed for applying a data mining technique. This stage is a complex task that demands from database designers a strong interaction with experts having a broad knowledge about the application domain. Frameworks aiming to systemize this stage have significant limitations when applied to Credit Behavioral Scoring solutions. This paper proposes a framework based on the model driven development approach to systemize the mentioned stage. This work has three main contributions: 1) improving the discriminant power of data mining techniques by means of the construction of new input variables which embed temporal knowledge for the technique;2) reducing the time of data transformation using automatic code generation, and 3) allowing artificial intelligence and statistics modelers to perform the data transformation without the help of database experts. In order to validate the proposed framework, two comparative studies were conducted. Experiments showed that the proposed framework delivers a performance equivalent or superior to those of existing frameworks and reduces the time of data transformation with a confidence level of 95%. Among the factors that contribute to the inherent complexity of the software development process is the gap between the design and the formal analysis domains. Software design is often considered a human oriented task while the analysis phase draws on formal representation and mathematical foundations. An example of this dichotomy is the use of UML for the software design phase and Petri Nets for the analysis;a separation of concerns that leads to the creation of heterogeneous models. Although UML is widely accepted as a language that can be used to model the structural and behavioural aspects of a system, its lack of mathematical foundations is seen as a serious impediment to rigorous analysis. Petri Nets on the other hand have a strong mathematical basis that are well suited for formal analysis;they lack however the appeal and the ease-of-use of UML A pressing concern for software developers is how to bridge the gap between these domains and allow for model interoperability and the integration of different toolsets across them, and thus reduce the complexity of the software development process. The aim of this paper is to present a model driven development (MDD) model transformation which supports a seamless transition between UML and Petri Nets. This is achieved by model interoperability from UML Sequence Diagrams to Petri Nets and supported by tool integration. The model transformation framework allows a software system to be designed in terms of UML Sequence Diagrams and subjected to formal analysis by taking advantage of the strong mathematical framework of Petri Nets. The behaviour of a Personal Area Network will be used to illustrate the proposed approach and to highlight model interoperability and tool integration through the design, the transformation and the analysis phases. The most current trends in the evolution of software development process are closely related with the increasing complexity of software systems. This motivates software engineers and system developers to find an alternative solution for software system design and development. In this case, the manner offered by OMG's initiative, the model driven Architecture namely, represents a model-driven approach to software development. It also considers the further evolution of CASE tools, bringing their functionality to the next level. This paper investigates the variety of the CASE tools developed under an impact of MDA growing progress. The differences between model driven Architecture and model driven development in the context of automatic capabilities for software development are also discussed in the paper. The example of possibility to define a set of tools proposed as a tool chain for development of software systems under the framework of MDA, the projection of two-hemisphere approach for object-oriented software development into authors' developed component model of MDA is offered in the paper.
