We demonstrate a development work-flow for the co-evolution of model and code, based on ***, an online tool for the rapid prototyping of web applications, and on common Version Control Systems. *** exploits the Interaction Flow modeling Language (IFML), an OMG standard for describing the user's interaction with the application by means of flows of information in reaction to user events. In the demo, attendees will be able to edit IFML specifications with ***, generate the first version of the code of a web/mobile application from the model, improve the generated code with manually added details (e.g. styling), evolve the original IFML model introducing new requirements and re-generate the code of the updated version, in a way that fully preserves the manually coded details. The demonstrated approach solves the well-know problem of model driven forward engineering of breaking the automated development cycle when features that cannot be modelled are added manually to the generated code.

The creation of services is a complex activity that involves several tasks. Furthermore this complexity is augmented by the fact that supporting service creation environments are technology-specific. Consequently a technology-independent approach and framework are required to generate service creation environments and drive service creation. In this paper we present such an approach and a generic framework for supporting service creation. The approach realizes service creation via the phases of: (i) domain specific language definition, (ii) model definition and validation, (iii) model-to-model transformation and (iv) model-to-code generation. Each phase maps to a corresponding phase in service creation starting from service analysis to service implementation. The applicability of the approach and its accompanying framework is demonstrated via an example scenario that illustrates the automatic generation of a service creation environment for an online survey system.

The proliferation of smart spaces and emergence of new standards, such as Web Services, have paved the way for a new breed of software systems. Often the complete functional and QoS requirements of such software systems are not known a priori at design-time, and even if they are, they may change at run-time. Unfortunately, the majority of existing software engineering techniques rely heavily on human reasoning anti manual intervention. making them inapplicable for automatic composition of such software systems at run-time. Moreover, these approaches are primarily intended to be used by technically knowledgeable software engineers, as opposed to domain users. In this paper, we present Service Activity Schemas (SAS). an activity-oriented language for modeling software system's functional and QoS requirements. SAS targets service-oriented software systems, and relies on an ontology to provide domain experts with modeling constructs that are intuitively understood. SAS forms the centerpiece of a framework intended for user-driven composition and adaptation of service-oriented software systems in a pervasive setting. We provide a detailed description of SAS in the context of a case Study and formally specify its structural anti dynamic properties.

Action Languages represent an emerging paradigm where modeling abstractions are embedded in code to bridge the gap with visual models, such as UML models. The paradigm is gaining momentum, evident by the growing number of tools and standards that support this paradigm. In this paper, we report on a controlled experiment to assess the comprehensibility of those languages and compare it to that of object-oriented (OO) programming languages. We further report on the impact of also having access to the UML notation on the comprehensibility of those languages. Results suggest that action languages are significantly more comprehensible than traditional OO languages. Furthermore, there was not a significant improvement in comprehensibility when the UML notation was used along with both OO and action language code. We conclude that action languages are a promising alternative to traditional OO languages for specifying details, yet seem to be as comprehensible as high-level visual models.

The use of model driven development (MDD) is increasing in industry. When a Non Functional Requirement (NFR) not considered in the development must be added metamodels, models and also transformations are affected. Tasks for de ning and maintaining model transformation rules can be complex in MDD. model Transformation By Example (MTBE) approaches have been proposed to ease the development of transformation rules. In this paper an approach based on MTBE to derive the adaptation operations that must be implemented in a legacy model transformation when a NFR appears is presented. The approach derives semi-automatically the model transformations using execution traceability data and models differences. An example where access control property is integrated on a MDD system is introduced to demonstrate the usefulness of the tool to evolve model transformations.

Today's systems require a higher consideration for non functional requirements as security and dependability. Developers have to handle these requirements during software development lifecycle. To provide developers with security guidelines, security patterns were proposed. These patterns are a collection of experts' security knowledge and a good solution to convey security concepts. In order to encourage developers to take advantage from security solutions proposed by security patterns, we think that it is necessary to provide an appropriate mechanism to implement those patterns using UML profiles. In this paper, we propose a structured UML profiles construction process based on security patterns. An illustration of the proposed process is provided using the "active replication" pattern. A case study of GPS system is also provided to demonstrate the application of generated UML profile using the proposed process.

Many software systems need to be developed with adaptation in mind, where at runtime they need to detect changes in their operating environments and adapt themselves to cope with these changes while achieving or preserving the overall system goals. In recent years, there has been much research in the communities of context-aware systems and self-adaptive systems with their own foci. However, addressing context awareness and self-adaptation in a consistent and integrated manner remains a major challenge. In this paper, we introduce a novel approach to modeling and realizing such context-aware adaptive software systems. Our approach explicitly separates but relates the context model and the system model, so that their relationships, changes, and change impacts across the system and its contexts can be clearly captured and managed. In particular, we differentiate management context from operational context as to whether or not context changes cause system adaptation. To enable runtime changes to the system, its contexts, and their relationships, they all have their runtime representation, so that they can be manipulated and managed at runtime. Our component model for realizing the approach directly supports component interface definitions for context and management as well as functionality. Furthermore, we have developed a tool to generate the system implementations from their models and to validate and verify their context-aware adaptive behavior. We demonstrate our approach through the modeling and realization of a context-aware vehicle route planning system.

The interactions of several languages within a software system pose a number of problems. There is several anecdotal and empirical evidence supporting such concerns. This paper presents a solution to achieve proper language integration in the context of language workbenches and with limited effort. A simple example is presented to show how cross-language constraints can be addressed and the quality of the support attainable, which covers error-checking and refactoring. A research agenda is then presented, to support future work in the area of language integration, taking advantage of modern language workbenches features.

Simulink is widely used for model driven development (MDD) of industrial software systems. Typically, the Simulink based development is initiated from Stateflow modeling, followed by simulation, validation and code generation mapped to physical execution platforms. However, recent industrial trends have raised the demands of rigorous verification on safety-critical applications, which is unfortunately challenging for Simulink. In this paper, we present an approach to bridge the Stateflow based model driven development and a well-defined rigorous verification. First, we develop a self-contained toolkit to translate Stateflow model into timed automata, where major advanced modeling features in Stateflow are supported. Taking advantage of the strong verification capability of Uppaal, we can not only find bugs in Stateflow models which are missed by Simulink Design Verifier, but also check more important temporal properties. Next, we customize a runtime verifier for the generated non-intrusive VHDL and C code of Stateflow model for monitoring. The major strength of the customization is the flexibility to collect and analyze runtime properties with a pure software monitor, which opens more opportunities for engineers to achieve high reliability of the target system compared with the traditional act that only relies on Simulink Polyspace. We incorporate these two parts into original Stateflow based MDD seamlessly. In this way, safety-critical properties are both verified at the model level, and at the consistent system implementation level with physical execution environment in consideration. We apply our approach on a train controller design, and the verified implementation is tested and deployed on a real hardware platform.
