A qualitative study of domain specific languages for model driven security

In model-driven development, software system design is represented through models which are created using general purpose modeling languages e.g., UML. Later on system artifacts are automatically generated from these models. model-driven Security is a specialization of model-driven paradigm towards the domain of security, where security objectives are modeled along the system models and security infrastructures are directly generated from these models. Currently available general purpose modeling languages like UML do not have capability to model the security objectives along the system models. Over the past decade, many researchers are trying to address these limitations of the general purpose modeling languages and come up with several Domain Specific modeling Languages for model driven Security. In this study, a comparative study is presented regarding the security Domain Specific modeling Languages presented by the most prominent researchers for the development of secure system. A success criteria has been defined and these DSLs are critically analyzed based on it to obtain the qualitative results. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2014.

In this paper, we propose model driven software development and Security Performance Framework model to maintain the balance between security and performance for web applications. We know the large scale enterprise web applications are naturally complex and rigid to maintain. To deal with this complexity of web applications, we propose OMG's UML modeling language for forward engineering and SPF based software engineering practices to improve the performance of web applications. model driven development approaches focus on software automation with generators that translate models into code. One of the major difficulties in developing web applications with object-oriented modeling is to translate a designed model into code that satisfies required real-time performance. We propose a method of automatic code synthesis ensuring that the synthesized code to be efficient enough to use the minimal amount of resources such as CPU time and memory. For implementation of Security Performance framework based trusted operating system, we propose object oriented based Code translation through forward engineering for the same web application. The goal of this paper is to demonstrate a process in which such translation can be formally verified. In this paper, we propose SPF based code verification and object oriented design process for web applications.

Automatable portion and manual portion of model transformation (MT) definitions usually are not currently differentiated in most model driven software development processes (MD2P). This absence contributes to the vagueness and inefficiency of the task schedule of MT automation. We propose a concept framework of MIB/CSD (manual work, inheritance, behaviorism / cardinality, static, dynamic) to model MD2P and differentiate between automatable and manual portions of work. Its application can potentially provide quality evaluation support for completeness and clearness of MD2P models based on UML. Experimental examples of the generation of rule based transformation system with the aid of this framework are illustrated.

Devices used in Internet of Things (IoT) technology are interconnected through internet and continuously send data for storage in disparate databases and files. This poses heterogeneity in data syntax and semantics. In the past few years, researches have been carried out to handle these problems in various information systems such as water and healthcare by applying semantic and syntactic uniformity. This research presents an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) framework to sustain the interoperability between stakeholders within an information system by applying model driven software development (MDSD) paradigm and ontology. The major contribution of this research is building software model which is annotated with semantic model to maintain the comprehension between the modelers and the programmers allowing sustainability by adapting to the changing environment. Moreover, the framework offers two types of semantic validation i.e. model and data of the documents to integrate sensor data which we claim as a novelty in this study. The validated IoT data is integrated through RESTful web service interface of SensorThings API. The aim of this paper is to apply the methodology of the framework, on IoT based healthcare system, that has been successful in water information system.

Complex systems-of-systems (SoS) requiring fault-tolerance and high reliability often require redundant systems. The concept of redundancy that includes components with differing failure modes is well understood in the realm of hardware design. N-version programming, although shown to produce significant gains in software reliability over single-version fault tolerant techniques, is not widely accepted or applied. This is due, in part, to N-version programming's lengthy development time and its inherent problems with version independence. model driven software development (MDSD) is a process that promises gains in software productivity and quality. While progress in MDSD has witnessed the expansion of the supporting Unified modeling Language profile for modeling fault tolerant characteristics, and the development of specific design patterns for the production of fault tolerant software, MDSD's support in the generation and testing of fault tolerant applications is not evident or explicitly defined. This paper discusses the development of a fault tolerant MDSD framework, which enables users to design, implement and test fault tolerant applications using the N-version modeling technique. The framework closes the gap between existing modeling patterns and the practical application of fault tolerant MDSD, and supports follow-on research to address specific questions relating to the benefits of MDSD within the fault tolerance software domain.

Implementing solutions for optimisation problems with general-purpose programming languages is a time consuming task that can only be carried out by professional software developers who typically are not domain experts. We address this problem by developing the domain-specific language Athos that allows to declaratively specify models of problems such as the vehicle routing problem with time windows. These models serve as input to a generator that creates programs to solve the modelled problem in a multi-agent environment (NetLogo) which is further extended with a genetic algorithm optimiser. We discuss the overall Athos architecture and compare the source models with the generated code to demonstrate the benefit for developers. Furthermore, we present a qualitative assessment of the language by applying selected aspects of the Cognitive Dimensions of Notations framework. Beyond the quality criteria discussed in this paper future work will include extensive field experiments in which domain experts will apply Athos to their practical problems. A formal evaluation process will help to improve the usability and applicability of the language.

Many Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) tend to gradually adopt Web based business applications to enhance their business processes. To support this gradual adoption we need a framework that supports iterative development. Further processes that have been supported by web based business applications can change and evolve requiring applications to be changed accordingly. To support these needs we have extended the Component Based E Application development and Deployment Shell;CBEADS (c). We analysed many business applications and derived a meta-model. We implemented this meta-model with in CBEADS (c) and developed a set of Smart Tools to take the instance values of the meta-model and generate the web based business applications. When a new business application is required, a business analyst can create a new instance of the meta-model. To change an implemented business application the appropriate values of the meta-model instance that corresponds to the particular application can be changed.

The trend from single processor to parallel computer architectures has increased the importance of parallel computing. To support parallel computing it is important to map parallel algorithms to a computing platform that consists of multiple parallel processing nodes. In general different alternative mappings can be defined that perform differently with respect to the quality requirements for power consumption, efficiency and memory usage. The mapping process can be carried out manually for platforms with a limited number of processing nodes. However, for exascale computing in which hundreds of thousands of processing nodes are applied, the mapping process soon becomes intractable. To assist the parallel computing engineer we provide a model-driven approach to analyze, model, and select feasible mappings. We describe the developed toolset that implements the corresponding approach together with the required metamodels and model transformations. We illustrate our approach for the well-known complete exchange algorithm in parallel computing.

This paper presents an enterprise-modelling oriented approach to IT Governance. Main requirements for a IT Governance Framework are presented and applicability is shown by means of operationalizing Strategic Alignment a main focus area of IT Governance. Two frameworks are briefly described, namely PRO2 SA (domain-specific for Strategic Business Alignment) and the general-purpose framework SQUAM for metamodelling, enterprise modelling and model-analysis. Key aspects of this approach are the information enrichment of enterprise models (mainly with key figures) and the integration into a Business Intelligence Suite for comprehensive business analysis.

model-based software development (MBSD) is rapidly gaining popularity. There are two main approaches to MBSD: transformational and compositional approaches. The first has been initiated in nineties by creating UML - a universal modeling language that has become a standard for software specification, and has influenced research in software engineering. One can say that UML has initiated model-driven software engineering (MDSE). The second - compositional approach has grown out of domain-specific language development. It uses visual specifications as input, and is represented by tools like MetaEdit+ and CoCoViLa. We give a survey of these approaches, and discuss in more detail the compositional approach, paying attention at combining compositional and object-oriented software specifications.
