model driven web engineering: A Systematic Mapping Study

Background: model driven web engineering (MDWE) is the application of the model driven paradigm to the domain of web software development, where it is particularly helpful because of the continuous evolution of web technologies and platforms. Objective: In this paper, we prepare a survey of primary studies on MDWE to explore current work and identify needs for future research. Method: Systematic mapping study uses for finding the most relevant studies and classification. In this study, we found 289 papers and a classification scheme divided them depending on their research focus, contribution type and research type. Results: The papers of solution proposal (20%) research type are majority. The most focused areas of MDWE appear to be: web Applicability (31%), Molding and Notation (19%), and Services and Oriented (18%). The majority of contributions are methods (33%). Moreover, this shows MDWE as a wide, new, and active area to publications. Conclusions: Whilst additional analysis is warranted within the MDWE scope, in literature, composition mechanisms have been thoroughly discoursed. Furthermore, we have witnessed that the recurrent recommendation for Validation Research, Solution Proposal and Philosophical Papers has been done through earlier analysis.

The number of web applications which are part of Business Intelligence (BI) applications has grown exponentially in recent years, as has their complexity. Consequently, the amount of data used by these applications has also increased. The larger the number of data used, the greater the chance to make errors is. That being the case, managing data with an acceptable level of quality is paramount to success in any organizational business process. In order to raise and maintain adequate levels of Data Quality (DQ), it is indispensable for web applications to be able to satisfy specific DQ requirements. To do so, DQ requirements should be captured and introduced into the development process of the web Application, together with the other software requirements needed in the applications. In the field of web application development, however, there appears to us to exist a lack of proposals aimed at managing specific DQ software requirements. This paper considers the MDA (model driven Architecture) approach and, principally, the benefits provided by model driven web engineering (MDWE), putting forward a proposal for two artifacts. These consist of a metamodel and a UML profile for the management of Data Quality Software Requirements for web Applications (DQ_webRE).

Re-engineering legacy web applications into RIAs by aligning modernization requirements, patterns and RIA features

Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) have become a common platform for web developments. Its adoption has been accelerated thanks to different factors, among others, the appearance of patterns for typical RIA behaviors and the extension of different model driven web engineering methodologies to introduce RIA concepts. The real fact is that more and more developers are switching to RIA technologies and, thus, the modernization of legacy web applications into RIAs has become a trend topic. However, this modernization process lacks of a systematic approach. Currently, it is done in an ad hoc manner, being expensive and error-prone. This work presents a systematic process to modernize legacy web applications into RIAs. The process is based on the use of traceability matrices that relate modernization requirements, RIA features and patterns. Performing some operations on these matrices, they provide the analyst with the necessary information about the suitability of a pattern or set of patterns to address a given requirement. This work also introduces two measures, the degree of requirement realization and the degree of pattern realization, which are used to discuss the pattern selection. Finally, the applicability of the approach is evaluated by using it in several web systems. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Data-intensive web applications are usually developed by means of specific web application frameworks, which provide, among other features, the proper tools to automate redundant tasks, e.g. the implementation of CRUD operations. However, although model-driven web engineering (MDWE) approaches have defined specific languages and tools to significantly reduce development efforts, the provision of such automation tools has been traditionally neglected. This paper presents AutoCRUD, a webRatio plug-in automating the generation of CRUD operations in OMG Interacting Flow modelling Language (IFML). It has been developed as a joint effort by academia and industry to assess its validity in a real scenario. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Development and deployment technologies for data-intensive web applications have considerably evolved in the last years. Domain specific frameworks or model-driven web engineering approaches are examples of these technologies. They have made possible to face implicit problems of these systems such as quick evolving business rules or severe time-to-market requirements. Both approaches propose the automation of redundant development tasks as the key factor for their success. The implementation of CRUD operations is a clear example of repetitive and recurrent task that may be automated. However, although web application frameworks have provided mechanisms to automate the implementation of CRUD operations, model-driven web engineering approaches have generally ignored them and its automation has not been properly faced yet. This paper presents AutoCRUD, a webRatio plug-in that automates the generation of CRUD operations in OMG IFML (Interaction Flow modelling Language) standard. The suitability of this tool has been evaluated by its application into several real projects developed by a software company specialized in model-driven web application development. The results obtained present evidences of the significant productivity improvement obtained by the tool, which almost completely removes the developer time dedicated to CRUD operation implementation.

Fast prototyping is a quick and cost effective development of a (minimum) viable version of a software useful to some purpose (e.g., requirements verification or design validation), which can be discarded or refactored to become the version of the software to be delivered. In this paper we propose a model-driven approach for the fast prototyping of Rich Internet Applications (RIAs). Starting from the conceptual model of a RIA, intermediate models and the source code of a ready-to-deploy application prototype are automatically generated through a model-driven development process which exploits well known model-driven engineering frameworks and technologies including Eclipse EMF, GMF, and Xpand. Compared to traditional, non model-driven, prototyping approaches, our proposal allows to drastically reduce the overall prototyping effort to just the effort required to define the conceptual model of the application, as the rest of the process is substantially automatic. The paper describes the overall RIA prototyping approach, the supporting tools and adopted technologies, along with the results from a case study carried out for validation and verification purposes.

model-driven web engineering (MDWE) is a new paradigm which provides satisfactory results in the development of web software systems. However, as can be concluded from several research works, MDWE provokes traceability problems and the necessity of managing constraints in metamodel instances and transformation executions. The management of these aspects is usually executed manually in the most of MDWE approaches. Nevertheless, model-driven paradigm itself can offer suitable ways to manage them. This chapter presents NDT-Quality, an approach to measure the quality of web projects developed with NDT (navigational development techniques), and offers a view about the application of this tool in real web projects.

This paper presents an approach for the model-driven fast prototyping of web applications. The approach exploits well known model-driven engineering frameworks and technologies, such as Eclipse EMF, GMF, and Xpand, to enable the design of a web application and the automatic generation of the code artifacts implementing a ready to deploy prototype of it. The approach allows to effortlessly and quickly carry out a modeling-generation-validation process in order to validate and refining the design of a web application before actually implementing it. The paper describes the approach and the process followed to define it, the supporting tools and the technologies used to develop them, and the results from a case study of designing and generating the prototype of a web application for on-line note taking and sharing. The process and the technologies used to develop the proposed approach can be reused to develop a fast prototyping approach for a different design model and a different target technology platform.

Research shows a gap in terms of requirements elicitation between developers and endusers. Due to the low technical expertise of some members of online communities, they often cannot collaborate efficiently with developers and cannot provide continuous feedback during application development processes. However, collaborative modeling processes can play an important role in education, enforcing best-practices, support rapid prototyping and lower the communication and collaboration barriers between developers and end-users. This paper presents a tool for collaborative modeling of web applications in near real-time and their automatic generation. Early evaluation with end-users in simulated community settings show promising results for the interplay of modeling and collaboration in requirements gathering and web application design and development. We claim that near real-time modeling on the web has the potential to bring together stakeholders during design and development and offers a new perspective on model-based web engineering.
