This article outlines the need to implement a global method to secure the project delivery of Nuclear Infrastructures. This method articulates and put in light various concepts issued from Value Analysis, system Architecting and system engineering. Particularly, it has to be based on appropriate modelling hypotheses promoted in model based system engineering (MBSE) context. This article focuses particularly on collaborative issues of helping engineers to remain aware about and able to exchange without ambiguities, ideas, principles, data, information and knowledge that are gathered by other actors in charge of respectively, system Architecting and system engineering phases. The method is presented through a first set of common concepts and relations between concepts, disambiguated and formalised that will be used in a concrete Nuclear infrastructure development project.

The modeling Architectures and Parameterization for Spacecraft (MAPS) environment was created to realize the model-based systems engineering (MBSE) philosophy for spacecraft applications. MAPS combines the systems modeling Language (SysML) for initial templates and requirements, system parametric sizing, and optimization in order to model space architectures. Further, it employs system-of-systems engineering practices for architectural analysis (e.g. complexity and flexibility metrics) and also integrates orbital trajectory analysis for mission simulations. The environment has potential to improve efficiency and completeness in studies of spacecraft constellations;on-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing;or other emerging concepts. In addition to detailing the above features, this paper demonstrates the use of MAPS with low-Earth orbit satellite constellation study.

The challenge of reducing time and cost of developing aircraft that are also fuel-efficient cascade down from the aircraft operators to aircraft OEMs to aeroengine manufacturers and aero systems manufacturers. The focus of this paper is to address this challenge through application of model-based systems engineering and a simulation drive design workflow on an aircraft engine gearbox housing. A typical gearbox design starts with system level performance requirements such as power requirements, speed, torques and operating conditions. The goal is to design a minimum weight, manufacturable gearbox housing in the shortest possible time that meets the performance requirements. In this paper, authors present a design workflow developed for meeting this goal.

This paper represents an attempt of extend the model based systems engineering (MBSE) philosophy to the process of designing and certifying aircraft structures with a level of detail and scope of modeling that would meet certification requirements. The work will present comparisons, not available until now, between the cost and time required by current design methods and by an integrated model based design method in the case of a particular and important aerospace structural system: engine pylon. Weight and the development costs of the resulting designs will also be compared. It allows us for the first time to view in both qualitative (weight performance), and quantitative (engineering effort) ways the benefits of the integrated model based approach in a highly realistic certification driven structural design case. Along the way, to build the model based integrated design optimization platform (modular automation platform – MAP) used here for this design process efficiency study, quite a number of technical innovations were necessary to make it practical and efficient. The work describes certain number of those innovations too.

The value of cyberphysical product development within Integration, Verification, and Validation (IVV) is immense, with reduced cost for aircraft flight test and shortened product development cycles as a result of more concurrency in product engineering tasks. In the past five years, the use of cyberphysical and virtual systems integration methods for verification and validation has grown rapidly across many heavy industrial product markets and has seen widespread adoption within the aerospace and defense industries particularly. This paper discusses the advancements and advantages provided by cyberphysical and virtual product development through the life of a civil aircraft program while utilizing real-time optimized industrial Linux servers.

The ongoing global digital revolution is transforming all aspects of product development, delivery, operation, and support. Driven by cyber-physical technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Big Data Analytics, Digital engineering, and Digital Manufacturing it enables transforming current document-centric processes to a digital, connected, model-based systems engineering environment involving all the advances of the new cyber-physical world. Concepts for transforming ground and flight testing of aeronautical systems employing digital engineering principles and practices are introduced. A value metric for testing based on the quantification and planned mitigation of uncertainty of technical performance measures (TPM) is introduced. Traditional model validation by comparing model output with experimental data is transformed into an improved predictive capability using an integrated validation and calibration process for a digital surrogate response surface model using all heterogeneous data available. Approaches to using quantified margins and uncertainties for TPMs derived from calibrated digital surrogates to project the best way to master risk and reduce the time to achieve an operational capability are also presented. Concepts for digital engineering-enabled innovative approaches to air vehicles development and operation are outlined.

Environmental and economical constraints lead to designing more and more complex systems. To face these issues, model based system engineering proposes an approach based on an interconnected multi point of view system modeling. Each representation of the system has a different abstraction level that is valuable at different stages of the system design and suits its own objectives respectively: 1) purposes and global constraints definition, 2) architecture choices, components sizing and strategies testing, 3) accurate simulation results on various scenarios. Interconnections between the different levels have two objectives: on one hand be able to define the requirements of a lower level using higher level information and on the other hand send back simulation variable values from a lower level to evaluate the higher level requirements satisfaction. Resource management is carried out through a functional model, which is a macroscopic and low-complexity model of the system providing fast simulation results. In this paper, this multi-level methodology is applied to the thermal system management of an electric vehicle in order to optimize its resource management. The different levels design and the development of their interconnections are detailed.

A typical aircraft certification process consists of obtaining a type, production, airworthiness, and continued airworthiness certificate. During this process, a type certification plan is created that includes the intended regulatory operating environment, the proposed certification basis, means of compliance, and a list of documentation to show compliance. This paper extends previous work to demonstrate a model-based framework for the management of these certification artifacts for normal category airplanes. The developed framework integrates the regulatory rules and approved means of compliance in a single model while using best-practices found in model-based systems engineering (MBSE) literature. This framework, developed using SysML in MagicDraw captures not just the textual requirements and verification artifacts, but also their relationships and any inherent meta-data properties via custom defined stereotype profiles. Additionally, a simulation capability that automates the extraction and export of the applicable rules (certification basis) and corresponding means of compliance for any aircraft under consideration at the click of a button has been developed. The framework also provides numerous additional benefits to different stakeholders that have been described in detail with examples where necessary.

This contribution describes digital engineering influences on the design and execution of data-driven work flows to identify and validate technology portfolios that may impact formation flying measures of effectiveness associated with different classes of aerospace vehicles. As part of the NATO AVT-279 task group in support of Formation Flying for Efficient Operations, the discussion describes nuances associated with the digital engineering "transformation" currently under development at the U. S. Air Force Research Laboratory, and outlines future collaborative activities that may be pursued in an international collaborative forum. To establish a baseline for future research, contemporary technology value assessment methodologies and the process used to execute a typical work flow are described. New technology infusion approaches that present value assessments in terms of mission effectiveness require further research. To enable a future collaborative activity, a survey of software solutions that may be useful for realizing digital engineering work flows are identified and discussed agnostically. These software solutions are presented in three broad classes that include statistical software, uncertainty quantification software, and agent-based simulation tools. The concept of a "validated technology" is defined and the potential ramifications of the data collection needed to execute digital engineering work flows are briefly discussed. Baseline aerospace vehicle choices for large transport and small unmanned air systems, and well as relevant mission scenarios, are identified and may be leveraged to support future research. A notional roadmap for international collaboration is presented to develop a sustainable forum for research and development of NATO-relevant digital engineering work flows.

The reduction of aircraft operating costs is one of the most important objectives addressed by aeronautical manufactures and research centers in the last decades. In order to reach this objective, one of the current ways is to develop innovative on-board system architectures, which can bring to lower fuel and maintenance costs. The development and optimization of these new aircraft on-board systems can be addressed through a Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) approach, which involves different disciplines. One relevant discipline in this MDO problem is Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS), which allows the assessment of the reliability and safety of aircraft systems. Indeed the development of innovative systems cannot comply with only performance requirements, but also with reliability and safety constraints. Therefore, the RAMS discipline plays an important role in the development of innovative on-board systems. In the last years, different RAMS models and methods have been defined, considering both conventional and innovative architectures. However, most of them rely on a document-based approach, which makes difficult and time consuming the use of information gained through their analysis to improve system architectures. On the contrary, a model-based approach would make easier and more accessible the study of systems reliability and safety, as explained in several studies. model based systems engineering (MBSE) is an emerging approach that is mainly used for the design of complex systems. However, only a few studies propose this approach for the evaluation of system safety and reliability. The aim of this paper is therefore to propose a MBSE approach for model-based RAMS evaluations. The paper demonstrates that RAMS models can be developed to quickly and more effectively assess the reliability and safety of conventional and innovative on-board system architectures.
