This contribution describes digital engineering influences on the design and execution of data-driven work flows to identify and validate technology portfolios that may impact formation flying measures of effectiveness associated with different classes of aerospace vehicles. As part of the NATO AVT-279 task group in support of Formation Flying for Efficient Operations, the discussion describes nuances associated with the digital engineering "transformation" currently under development at the U. S. Air Force Research Laboratory, and outlines future collaborative activities that may be pursued in an international collaborative forum. To establish a baseline for future research, contemporary technology value assessment methodologies and the process used to execute a typical work flow are described. New technology infusion approaches that present value assessments in terms of mission effectiveness require further research. To enable a future collaborative activity, a survey of software solutions that may be useful for realizing digital engineering work flows are identified and discussed agnostically. These software solutions are presented in three broad classes that include statistical software, uncertainty quantification software, and agent-based simulation tools. The concept of a "validated technology" is defined and the potential ramifications of the data collection needed to execute digital engineering work flows are briefly discussed. Baseline aerospace vehicle choices for large transport and small unmanned air systems, and well as relevant mission scenarios, are identified and may be leveraged to support future research. A notional roadmap for international collaboration is presented to develop a sustainable forum for research and development of NATO-relevant digital engineering work flows.

The reduction of aircraft operating costs is one of the most important objectives addressed by aeronautical manufactures and research centers in the last decades. In order to reach this objective, one of the current ways is to develop innovative on-board system architectures, which can bring to lower fuel and maintenance costs. The development and optimization of these new aircraft on-board systems can be addressed through a Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) approach, which involves different disciplines. One relevant discipline in this MDO problem is Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS), which allows the assessment of the reliability and safety of aircraft systems. Indeed the development of innovative systems cannot comply with only performance requirements, but also with reliability and safety constraints. Therefore, the RAMS discipline plays an important role in the development of innovative on-board systems. In the last years, different RAMS models and methods have been defined, considering both conventional and innovative architectures. However, most of them rely on a document-based approach, which makes difficult and time consuming the use of information gained through their analysis to improve system architectures. On the contrary, a model-based approach would make easier and more accessible the study of systems reliability and safety, as explained in several studies. model based systems engineering (MBSE) is an emerging approach that is mainly used for the design of complex systems. However, only a few studies propose this approach for the evaluation of system safety and reliability. The aim of this paper is therefore to propose a MBSE approach for model-based RAMS evaluations. The paper demonstrates that RAMS models can be developed to quickly and more effectively assess the reliability and safety of conventional and innovative on-board system architectures. systems are becoming increasingly interdependent and interconnected while the enterprise charged with developing such systems faces a challenge in ensuring that these dependencies and interconnections are known and well understood such that the enterprise’s portfolio of programs, projects and systems will be balanced and robust. Enterprise systems engineering (ESE) is an emerging discipline that is designed to handle the challenges of helping to manage this portfolio and ensuring that the various mission and business systems are developed in a coherent, efficient and effective manner. As defined in the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Digital engineering (DE) Strategy, DE is "an integrated digital approach that uses authoritative sources of system data and models as a continuum across disciplines to support lifecycle activities from concept through disposal." That Strategy establishes a set of goals and objectives for DE within the Department. This paper describes the desired features of an ESE capability that can help the enterprise manage its portfolio as well as addressing the various non-system solutions that must be brought to bear. The strategy for realizing this ESE capability is described in terms of the goals and objectives that the enterprise should be expected to achieve. The paper then describes the roles and responsibilities needed for the effective and efficient implementation of DE principles and concepts in support of the systems engineering activities across the enterprise to facilitate the disciplined exercise of ESE at every organizational level. © 2020 The MITRE Corporation. model-based systems engineering (MBSE) can be used to develop the architecture of a space-based sensor. The process begins with the development of use cases (UCs) of a general system model for a sensor processor which is composed of both hardware and software-based elements. Domain-specific UC’s can then be created and linked to the general level. This process continues through the modeling of variances in system behavior, including activity, sequence and state diagrams. This is done in parallel with the development of structural model instances that represent the configuration of the system for the specific domain being considered. The result is an end-to-end extensible sensor model that can then be applied to analyze the end-to-end signal processing chain. © 2020 The MITRE Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

With the increasing availability of Earth Observation (EO) data has come a commensurate rise in EO applications. To address the dual needs of processing data for applications and designing missions with applications in mind, we present a multi-disciplinary, integrated modeling framework to advance environmental management, policymaking, and observation platform design. This core modeling framework is called Environment-Vulnerability-Decision-Technology (EVDT). EVDT is not the model itself, it is the framework that guides the creation of an integrated model customized to each application with a specific set of stakeholders in mind and designed using systems Architecture. The EVDT framework can be customized to build integrated models specific to a certain application. Individual models in the framework include certain core models (Environment, Vulnerability, Decision, Technology) and optional models such as Public Health which are added when needed for a specific application. The Environment model uses earth science methods to estimate the state of environmental phenomena;The Vulnerability model captures societal impact of environmental changes including ecosystem services;the Decision model captures human behavior and policy consequences;and the Technology model provides tools to design earth observation systems or select among earth observation technologies such as satellites, airborne sensors, and in-situ sensors. The intent in developing this framework and its applications is to lead to the development of a standard to facilitate the re-use of models and the design of future remote observation systems. The presented prototype specifically focuses on two case studies. The first case study considers the dynamics of human and environmental behavior related to the mangrove forests in the Guarat-iba area of Rio de Janeiro. This article suggests a model-based Object-Oriented approach for the conceptual design of a very complex aerospace product. Indeed, the new frontiers of aerial transportation systems require integrated and multidisciplinary approaches. In particular, this paper suggests not only a proper methodology but also supports tool-chain, consisting of both commercial and ad-hoc, built-in tools. The set of tools selected is not exclusive and can be widened as soon as proper interfaces will be developed, but the real aim of the paper is to show the potentialities of this approach in managing the design of very complex systems. In the second part of the article, the theoretical approach is then a applied to the conceptual design of a hypersonic transportation aimed at performing suborbital parabolic flights. Eventually, the result related to this application are summarized and the enhancements in traceability and standardization will be highlighted.

A conceptual design sizing and synthesis tool implementation in SysML with visualizations in JMP is demonstrated. Various system elements and their attributes are represented in the MagicDraw environment which improved collaboration within the team during the development of the model. The visualizations proved to be valuable artifacts to communicate details about the current system design, display available design decisions, and inform decision makers with immediate consequences of their ideas. After decisions have been made, the relevant metrics are transferred back to the system model and the design can be evaluated and analyzed further by requirements checks as well as other external computations that are also connected to the system model for the purpose of traceability of design decisions. The flexibility of the model-based systems engineering methods enable greater consistency of the design across many computational analyses.

model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has been increasingly embraced by both industry and government to keep track of system complexity. MBSE allows the engineer to represent the system in a comprehensive computer model, allowing for better traceability, tracking, and information consistency. The vision and promise of MBSE is one where systems models and analyses are tightly integrated in an automated, collaborative, easily accessible, and secure framework. However, the current state-of-the-art falls short of this promise due to a significant gap between MBSE tools and their integration with analysis tools. Phoenix Integration proposes to develop and prototype a framework that would help realize the vision and promise of MBSE. This prototype framework will be web-based and will use existing tools and frameworks already deployed and being used by industry. This will be done by leveraging available existing technology as well as commercial products currently under development. At the center of the framework is the connection between No Magic Teamwork Cloud Server and modelCenter (R) MBSE. Teamwork Cloud Server is a web-based MBSE collaboration platform, while modelCenter (R) MBSE is a next generation MBSE analysis integration tool currently being commercially developed at Phoenix Integration. This framework will be connected to distributed or high-performance computing resources for quick analysis execution, as well as a continuous integration server for automated execution in response to a model change. In addition to being able to interact with the systems model through a web environment, the user would be able to execute the associated analyses and workflows using information from the systems model. Automatic requirements verification can be performed through automated analysis execution whenever a change in the systems model is detected. NASA Platform for Autonomous systems (NPAS) is a disruptive software platform and processes being developed by the NASA Stennis Space Center (SSC) Autonomous systems Laboratory (ASL). Autonomous operations are critical for the success, safety and crew survival of NASA deep space missions beyond low Earth orbit, including the Gateway, and for the future of cost-effective ground mission operations. NPAS represents the embodiment of an innovative paradigm for "thinking" autonomy in contrast to brute-force autonomy. NPAS uniquely addresses the requirements and integrates the primary functionalities for autonomous operations, in one platform that includes: (1) Integrated system Health Management (ISHM);(2) autonomy strategies, guided by system health and concepts of operations;(3) domain objects (system elements) and infrastructure to create complete application domain knowledge models (4) infrastructure to create, schedule, and execute mission plans;(5) infrastructure to develop user interfaces for comprehensive awareness;and (6) infrastructure to integrate distributed autonomous applications across networks. NPAS is a single platform that can be used to make any system operate with any desirable degree of autonomy, as well as provide comprehensive system awareness to operators and users.

This article introduces a tool-equipped method for modeling and simulating behaviors of a Critical Infrastructure (CI) considered here as system of systems, then evaluating its resilience. The method is based on modelling concepts, languages and tools from model based system engineering (MBSE), system of systems engineering (SoSE) and non-functional Properties management domains. It proposes an evaluation technique to evaluate nonfunctional properties, and particularly here considered resilience for which a metric is proposed. Simulation and evaluation are done by using a Multi Agent systems (MAS).
