In designing, verifying, and validating distributed systems today, an engineer is often faced with having to specify a system multiple times. For example, the engineer might specify it once in a model-checker for formal analysis, in an architectural description language for requirements analysis, and in a programming language for testing. By specifying the same system multiple times, there is risk that each specification has different semantics, so that the system tested differs from the one verified, for example. To help solve this problem, we envision an architectural domain-specific language (ADSL), or a unified language from which formal models, executable code, and architectural models can be synthesized. To make our problem tractable, we focus on distributed fault-tolerant systems. We present the Language for Integrated modeling and Analysis (LIMA), a particular ADSL that we have designed. We describe LIMA and its application to case studies motivated by avionics design.

Open Architectures, and the systems upon which they are based, span a wide variety of trade spaces - modularity vs performance, openness vs intellectual property and coverage vs extensibility among others. One trade space with a profound effect on architecture development and eventual adoption is the initial scope of the architecture itself. Traditional Open Architecture development approaches treat scoping as a search for a point solution on a spectrum that balances the needs of both specific adopting programs and broader Open Architecture communities of interest. In this paper we argue that it is beneficial to re -envision this trade space as a managed series of layered architecture decisions and architecture solutions in order to maximize value for all architecture stakeholders.

This article introduces a tool-equipped method for modeling and simulating behaviors of a Critical Infrastructure (CI) considered here as system of systems, then evaluating its resilience. The method is based on modelling concepts, languages and tools from model based system engineering (MBSE), system of systems engineering (SoSE) and non-functional Properties management domains. It proposes an evaluation technique to evaluate nonfunctional properties, and particularly here considered resilience for which a metric is proposed. Simulation and evaluation are done by using a Multi Agent systems (MAS).

A graphical model-based concept of operations (CONOPS) can be used to transform high-level system use cases (UCs) and operational activities into a series of discrete space vehicle payload commands including those which constitute the payload mission deck. This approach begins with a stakeholder’s high-level operational concept (HLOC) and the identification of an ordered progression of UCs to indicate a mission thread. Through stages of functional decomposition, atomic level functions for each configuration item (CI) are identified. The sequence of payload operations become the series of commands the payload must execute during a mission and include the messages which become the payload mission deck. The graphical artifacts generated during the analysis can be presented on the Enhanced OV-5a diagram showing the development of payload commands beginning with the top level UC. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. There has been great interest in the threat warning sensors and the countermeasures that might be used to ensure the survivability of the USAF Space Enterprise. Less well known are the families of technologies which actually enable the enterprise to "operate through" in a threat environment. This paper will briefly outline key pervasive SEV technologies, why they are important to the vision and how to create the collaboration necessary to advance these technologies. These technologies are common sense investment ideas that are also used in other military and civilian arenas. Examples in the paper include the necessity to invest in software defined radios, advanced low probability of intercept and low probability of detection communication, and advanced inertial measurement units. This paper outlines the policy, process, and lessons for effective development of pervasive space enterprise technologies development. Airborne flight management system (FMS) with the ability in aspects of navigation, flight planning and guidance is one of the core subsystems in the modern avionics system, assisting the pilots in managing the entire flight and relieving the crews from the heavy workload as well. The essential role of the FMS requires the high quality performance in all-phase development especially in the function design. However, the textual design documents are utilized as media in the traditional document based methodology to be transferred to the downstream hardware/software development. One of the problems is the lack of ability to track the requirement efficiently in all lifecycle development. Another one is the ambiguity problem introduced by the textual description. In addition, the design output in terms of multi related documents may increase the inconsistence possibility when any modification is required. Therefore, it attempts to introduce the method of model based system engineering (MBSE) using the system modeling language in the FMS design process to increase the trace ability and furthermore the product quality. The author then tries to use the integrated navigation function of FMS as an example to implement the new method in the design process, as the entire flight management system is a high complicated and multidiscipline covered system.

Decision-making process during product design and development has a considerable effect on the enhancement of competitiveness, since it allows cost reduction, quality improvement, and shortening of the time to market. In this paper, a framework of decision support system is investigated and developed throughout the product development process based on the application of a model-based system engineering (MBSE) methodology. In the process it will be clearly shown how SysML (system modelling Language) is used to assist the decision-making process in evaluating candidate design alternatives. The analysis will be carried out in each stage of product development taking in to account the Measure of Effectiveness (MOE's) as a means of setting priorities among alternative product design solutions. At the end of the analysis competent design alternatives will be evaluated through trade-off analysis and ready for decision makers to select the best design solution. The result of the research is thus will provide decision makers with recommendations, predictions of the results of alternative solutions, and other appropriate information to allow selection of the best course of action.

The digital thread is a rapidly expanding concept being explored within many domains including aerospace, automotive, and health. The main focus of the digital thread is the digital representation of the target entity or product from one phase to the next of its lifecycle thereby creating a digital clone of the entity. This digital clone can help provide a better understanding of the entity and can sometimes replace the expensive physical simulation and diagnosis processes. To realize a digital clone, a common domain agnostic framework is needed. This framework must accommodate an important aspect of the digital clone which consists of the ability to manage product requirements and how they are influenced by external trends that may potentially necessitate solution modifications. These external trends can be collectively described by the PESTLE model which includes Political, Economic, Sociocultural, Technological, Legal, and Environmental factors. In this paper, we propose the use of category theory to introduce a reasoning framework that is applicable to simple, complicated, and most importantly complex systems for a product across its entire lifecycle. The framework allows knowledge about how the entire lifecycle of a product could be impacted through requirements modifications enabling continued product validity. © 2017 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. Fault trees and dependency diagrams are standardized analysis methods for identifying possible causes of a system-level failure and breaking down high-level safety requirements. Although completeness of such an analysis is crucial to system safety, no formalized com- pleteness criteria exists. This paper introduces the concept of fault tree pessimism, pro- poses a completeness predicate developed from fault tree pessimism, and elaborates the application for safety requirements validation in quantitative fault tree analysis. It shows how the proposed predicate leads to greatly reduced fault tree validation effort compared to approaches from the state of the art, which are based on importance metrics. © 2017 by Alexander Wille.
