Advanced digital technologies across engineering and manufacturing must take the U.S. manufacturing ecosystem to the forefront of modernization and Industry 4.0. Many chokepoints impede readiness. Among the most critical challenges is a sustained pipeline of on point, skills-based labor to support underpinning model-based engineering processes and practices. This paper describes an education model that can be replicated geographically to strengthen and grow this foundational workforce. Its threefold approach to energize development of the model-based systems engineering (MBSE) workforce incorporates: systems engineering Technology (SET) curriculum deployed through community colleges;short-term courses for upskilling existing professionals;and consultancy support for both emerging and mature industries.

In the context of PLATO Camera Subsystem development, it has been decided to take advantage of MBSE methodologies using Enterprise Architect by Sparx systems as tool. A Local SysML Camera model for PLATO mission(1) has been built from different Excel spreadsheets, i.e. Verification Control Matrices, released by Subsystems. Same approach has been used for the Camera-system itself. The complete flow-down of requirements has been created in order to easily identify and monitor any impact on the design due to changes, deviations and non-compliances. The model can be updated at any time importing Excel spreadsheet while it can be used as source to export documentation needed during formal reviews, both as Word and Excel files. In addition, model architecture and constraints have been created through Block Definition Diagram and Internal Block Diagram so that structure, interfaces as well as interaction between different items, can be easily identified and monitored at both system and Subsystem level.

This paper is one of three being presented at this conference (AIAA SciTech 2024) considering how the principles of mutual accountability and validation dialog may be applied to address shortfalls in the current status of CFD validation when viewed in the context of the NASA CFD2030 Vision. By appealing to principles that have been refined and proven over many decades throughout the engineering and scientific communities, it is shown how the practices that have been developed specifically to support computational model validation may be viewed consistently with other means of accomplishing validation. In addition, the concept of a model validation landscape is introduced. This allows the various approaches that may be taken toward computational model validation - from the heuristic to the rigorously quantified - to be viewed from a consistent perspective. Specific opportunities that may arise as a result of the improved communication (validation dialog) afforded between stakeholders are also identified. A simplified analysis is presented to illustrate how fragmentation in the overarching model development lifecycle has contributed to the current shortfall in validated CFD capability. It is recommended that the principles and analysis described herein are refined and extended to apply to a much broader set of computational modelling scenarios. The scope of this endeavour should extend beyond CFD and beyond the aerospace sector. One of its more immediate goals should be the publication of a broader series of guidelines on computational model validation that serve the stakeholder community as a whole.

The next generation of rocket engines, including advanced chemical and nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) systems, will require a new development framework beyond the ubiquitous Test-Fail-Fix (TFF) approach. While acceptable in the past, the significant inefficiencies of TFF have historically contributed to over 70 % of the overall engine development program cost and caused significant schedule delays. Worse, even after the hundreds to thousands of tests performed through TFF, propulsion systems are still responsible for 63% of launch vehicle failures. This is unacceptable to meet the increasing complexity of chemical systems and stringent safety requirements of NTP. It has been repeatedly shown that the primary reason for TFF's deficiencies is due to a general disregard for reliability until testing has begun. Alternative frameworks that encourage reliability have been proposed, but have failed to gain traction for various reasons that includes lack of maturity, and incompatibility with the standard systems engineering process. This paper proposes a new framework, called Reliability-Driven Design and Test (ReDDT), which allows for a significant increase in rocket engine affordability and dependability through early integration of reliability into the systems engineering process. This technique is then demonstrated through model-based systems engineering (MBSE) for an upgrade instance of an RS -25 engine, and the current NTP conceptual design.

The focus of this research is the development of a framework for analyzing the process effectiveness and the outcomes of noise testing for Unmanned Aerial systems (UAS). Process effectiveness in noise testing is quantified in terms of metrics of interest such as time, cost, process complexity, and risks. Simulating the noise certification process through the proposed framework provides a better understanding and characterization of the process, including gaps, bottlenecks and unnecessary redundancies. Furthermore, exploration of potential improvements to for noise testing procedures may be realized through sampling of certification process time and cost via the use of Design-of-Experiments, enabling downstream analysis and optimization of test procedures. For selection of improvement strategies, the visualization of the process and the respective analysis outputs is achieved through an integrated decision making dashboard. Through this environment, it is possible to review critical analysis results and alternative testing procedures by assessing the adherence to regulatory practices and the performance improvements of alternative noise testing processes with respect to the metrics of interest.

The value proposition of implementing an active digital curation capability within an aerospace system product development life cycle is qualitatively examined. This first evaluation is necessary to incentivize methodology demonstration and software development tailored for a science and technology ecosystem. For complex digital ecosystems, active digital curation and resourcing of the appropriate infrastructure is necessary to accelerate secure sharing of digital materiel across diverse stakeholder groups. Digital curation use cases are examined for specific domains involving modeling and simulation, ground testing, and flight testing activities. Experience generating and curating artifacts for these use cases suggests that active digital curation is useful for informing near-term digital product development and enabling longer-term digital materiel management. Existing examples of digital curation life cycles are examined and discussed. As the time horizon increases, active digital curation may be viewed as an enabling capability for digital materiel management, and becomes a critical-path activity for accelerating digital concept maturation and transition to stakeholders. Active digital curation functionality should be considered as a fundamental requirement for an organization's digital transformation to augment passive knowledge management best practices.

In addition to inheriting concepts and methodological principles from system engineering, model-based systems engineering (MB SE) emphasizes the role of modelling and models in engineering processes. Different types of models are then constructed and used, each being a digital representation of a system that is undeniably partial, but also necessary. It highlights and enables the analysis of certain characteristics of this system, e.g. its behaviour, its functions or its composition to make relevant design choices. Digital Twins are the ultimate representation of a system, expected to be faithful and realistic for the purpose they serve, as well as to be connected and synchronized to the modelled physical asset. Hence, they support stakeholders to manage, train or optimize the target system when implemented and put into operation. However, defining and engineering Digital Twins remains a difficult process, with little methodology available to build and ensure it remains faithful to a continuously evolving reality. MBSE provides concepts and a methodological framework that are well adapted to solve complex engineering problems with many constraints. Lately, the Italian astronomical community has begun the transition to model based system engineering (MBSE). This tool has been largely applied to the development of the Cassegrain U-Band Efficient Spectrograph (CUBES) designed to provide high instrumental efficiency ( > 37 %) observations in the near UV (305-400 nm requirement, 300-420 nm goal) at a spectral resolving power of R > 20, 000 (with a lower-resolution, sky-limited mode of R approximate to 7, 000). Here, MBSE has been used mainly in 3 areas: requirements management, activities modeling, and generation of system structure documents, like the Product Breakdown Structure (PBS) or the Bill of Materials (BoM). Requirements management controls the flow-down process to have a coherent list of requirements. This is achieved using derived properties and tailored numbering. Activities modeling uses traditional MBSE techniques while mimicking the software templates for calibration and observation. To generate structural documents, the system structure is generated in Cameo using the outputs from the subsystems, granting high coherency between the model and the actual design state. The interaction with non-Cameo users relies on Excel files, accessible to all interested parties and usable by Cameo to export and import information.

This study introduces a development process of a simulation framework to analyze the driving range for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) under different thermal conditions, utilizing real-world test data for validation. The framework assesses BEVs' range and energy efficiency at ambient and cold temperatures by incorporating battery parameters, motor efficiency maps, and estimates of heating power. The results closely align with real-world test results, with simulation errors within acceptable limits for over 90% of vehicles at ambient temperatures and over 80% at cold temperatures. This accuracy supports the Korean certification organization in efficiently reviewing and screening BEVs for the market.

This paper presents a novel approach to the development of an intelligent workflow engine utilising an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. The proposed system combines the advantages of traditional workflow management systems with the power of AI to provide an efficient, user-friendly and highly customisable solution for workflow generation. The chatbot acts as a natural language interface for users to interact with the system, reducing the learning curve and increasing usability. The intelligent workflow engine uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques by applying Large Language models (LLMs) to enable seamless communication between users and the system. The AI chatbot actively helps users to create workflows based on their needs and supports them in making decisions, streamlining and automatically generating the entire workflow. The new methodology is integrated into an existing software framework for process automation and collaboration in the field of aircraft propulsion systems, extending an existing traditional workflow management system. Full insight into the implementation is provided. To validate the performance and flexibility of the extended workflow engine, the methodology is applied to generic workflows, each representing a unique challenge in workflow architecture. This involves investigating different LLMs and LLM parameters. Finally, the application and evaluation of the methodology is demonstrated by means of a specific application from the field of propulsion technology.
