A type certificate is a design approval issued by the FAA when the applicant demonstrates that an aircraft design complies with the applicable regulations. In prior work, the authors reported a model-based framework for the management of certification artifacts for 14 CFR Parts 23 and 25. The present work extends the transport category model and describes the features added to enable the identification of a certification basis and potential gaps for conventional and electrified aircraft. The regulatory model stereotype developed includes different structural elements and the three categories that trace from paragraph blocks - Regulation Requirement, Regulation Context, and Regulation Test. The automated extraction of certification bases for different aircraft is implemented using opaque actions within the Cameo simulation toolkit within MagicDraw. This is possible because the 14 CFR Part 25 model is enriched with metadata that captures the regulatory classifications, prescribed physical elements and their intended functions. Finally, the present work discusses the challenges encountered while instantiating this framework and automating the extraction of certification bases and gap analysis.

The design of mechanical systems is a complex process that is often associated with significant time and budget overruns. model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has emerged as a way to mitigate these issues. However, MBSE alone lacks the ability to simulate, analyze and design mechanical systems. Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) treats the parameters of the mechanical system as design variables and uses numerical optimization methods to find the parameters that optimize performance metrics while meeting constraints. However, it lacks the systematic traceability that MBSE offers. This paper proposes a methodology that builds on the Requirements engineering, Functional Design, Logical Design, and Physical Design (RFLP) approach to integrate MBSE and MDO and overcome each other's limitations. The recently proposed Process RFLP is used to aid in the development, enumeration, and selection of design activities involving simulation and MDO. Guidelines for the implementation of RFLP are formulated and presented. The approach is demonstrated through a test case involving the design of a single-aisle transport category aircraft. Compliance with aircraft requirements is verified, and a change in requirements case is presented. The long-term goal is to automate the methodology to enable MBSE to drive the formulation and execution of MDO.

The impact of the introduction of new technologies for aircraft systems or adaption of such is difficult to estimate in early design stages. The integration of new technologies immediately confronts aircraft manufacturers and suppliers with unseen and novel challenges, especially in regards to safety and inevitable inter-system dependencies. Aviation technology currently used in commercial aircraft has undergone rigorous and extensive testing and development resulting in vast experience of aircraft manufacturers. New technologies will have to be implemented with rigorous design and safety processes, to meet current safety levels. For aviation to accomplish it's self-set goal of carbon neutrality in the future, the incorporation of yet unused energy transformation principles, for example fuel cell systems, with little to no in-service experience to rely on, is imperative. In our ongoing research, we incorporate the established design and safety processes of the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) Aerospace Recommended Practices (ARP) 4761 and 4754A into an operative model-based systems engineering (MBSE) framework. The resulting safety analyses on aircraft level and systems level provide important insight into systems' emerging requirements and their traceability. Additional potential benefits may include an increase of the system architectures' comparability and reusability. The paper examines whether and how integrating safety analysis into model-based systems engineering during conceptual system design can improve early system architecture comparability and reusability through increased traceability. This could offer benefits for design studies in early stages with uncertainty of safety requirements from neighbouring and internal systems. To demonstrate the proposed approach, conceptual fuel cell systems (FuCS) and their respective thermal management systems (TMS) will be used as an illustrative case. Weapon systems critical to national security are increasingly becoming more complex and expensive. The cost overruns alone are estimated to be about half-a-trillion Dollars making it the second largest defense budget in the world. To address this problem DOD introduced the Digital engineering initiative in 2018. Even though its vision and scope are laudable, not all the areas/disciplines involved in realizing the weapon systems are excited. There is a certain poverty of imagination in naming the vision as "Digital engineering." Most people misunderstood it to be an engineering initiative (in particular systems engineering). This paper redefines the term "engineering" in Digital engineering as a process (e.g., engineering a political coup rather than like Mechanical/Electrical/systems engineering), which then addresses all the five pillars of Digital engineering. Another disturbing trend noticed by the author is that the systems engineering community equated model based systems engineering (MBSE) to Digital engineering. This prevents new thinking and thereby limits or negates the vision of Digital engineering. This paper also touches upon the origins of systems engineering at Bell Labs, obsession with the term "model" to mean anything and everything, including a text document or a static picture, and digital twins. It gives practical and useful definitions of "model" and "Digital Twin" and provides examples and some best practices followed in developing them. It also lists some of the disruptive technologies like ChatGPT which potentially could eliminate even the need to write computer programs. These systems can fuse Unstructured, Uncertain, Incomplete, Imprecise, and even Contradictory (UUIIC) information from all sources. This will make the current processes obsolete, including the systems engineering. Finally it presents the lessons learned and some recommendations for the near term including how to prevent the Digital Twins from becoming "Evil Twins"

The increased use of simulation models in aerospace system design necessitates broad model validation. To aid in validating models of electric generators, a solid-state-relay-based device is designed for augmenting the step-load testing capabilities of load banks. The device is a three-phase ac switch utilizing common-emitter IGBT modules to perform commutation in lieu of the electromagnetic relays in load banks. Step-load testing is performed on a 125 kW automotive electric machine operating as a generator both with and without the device in order to evaluate the step-load transition characteristics in each case. The results from testing without the device show a transition characteristic heavily influenced by the non-ideal behavior of load bank relays up to 31 ms after transient inception, rendering the analysis of generator response in that often-important region impractical. With the assistance of the solid-state relay device, non-ideal transition characteristics are largely limited to the first 5 mu s for load application steps and the first 55 mu s for load rejection steps for this test setup.

As interactions and communication between elements in engineered systems continue to increase, the need to manage complexity, mitigate risks and improve human understanding of a system behavior becomes important. Over the years, systems engineering has emerged as a way to address the design of complex systems. However, traditional systems engineering comes with its own limitations, and this has led to the emergence of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) which aims to provide a better solution of design of complex systems. A lot of MBSE approaches are still based on heuristics and sometimes there is no clear structure on the process of design, especially during product and process decomposition. This paper aims to address that gap through the introduction of a formal structure by integrating concepts from Axiomatic Design Theory with the Requirement, Functional, Logical and Physical (RFLP) framework used in MBSE. The axioms from axiomatic design guide the decision-making process and the zigzagging aspect of the theory aids in the development of a structure during design. This process also aids in the identification and mitigation of potential coupling in design. A coupled spring-mass-damper system will serve as a demonstration to verify the proposed approach.

This paper highlights efforts made at Arizona State University to infuse an "Entrepreneurial Mindset" into the Aerospace engineering program. Because this sort of curriculum reform cannot be achieved alone in a single capstone, we discuss how our university made widespread academic-unit efforts to evangelize the need for practical, end-user focused examples in lower-level curriculum. In addition to the capstone class, we highlight efforts made in two, junior-level Aerospace engineering classes that specifically prepare students for a Capstone that involves designing an aircraft to broad market requirements.

One promising approach to increase the environmental compatibility of future commercial aircraft is the use of fuel cell systems. In the future, these are to be integrated into the aircraft architecture, for example to supply aircraft systems with electrical power. In this context, one of the greatest challenges is the design of a safe thermal management system (TMS), since fuel cells produce a large amount of heat despite a high efficiency of over 50 %. This paper identifies the relevant interfaces and functions of the TMS using a function-based approach. In the first step, a functional structure of the fuel cell system is created within an MBSE model, which can be used to identify all the key interfaces to the TMS. In the next step, the functions of the TMS are determined. To evaluate the effectiveness of the presented approach in a safety-critical application various architectures from the literature are analyzed. The considered functions and components are compared against the result of the functional design to identify potential blind spots of the different methods and existing literature.

This article demonstrates the effectiveness of Mission engineering (ME) for the conceptual study of e-VTOL dual-use architecture, focusing on cargo transportation between more than 6000 remote islands and five major islands of Japan. Application of ME has first identified the necessary functions and performance to support a variety of missions, and second yields the project to achieve simplified operations as well as reduction of development cost and time by using COTS to realize agility of R&D. In parallel with this conceptual study, e-VTOL prototyping of demonstration model is underway with some experimental results and an R&D plan of deployment in the immediate future will be discussed.

In response to the problems of massive heterogeneous data, complex structural hierarchy, and inefficient functional implementation in the design of the ground PHM principled sample machine for airborne fuel pump, based on the three-dimensional multiphase criterion of the PHM system, and guided by the implementation of the PHM function of the airborne fuel pump, analyze the technical route of the design of the ground PHM principled sample machine for airborne fuel pump from three aspects, the modeling design method of the MBSE based airborne fuel pump PHM system, the visualization of PHM system design elements based on knowledge graph, and the real-time optimization based on software and hardware collaborative acceleration. The ground PHM principled sample machine for airborne fuel pump is designed to achieve real-time fault diagnosis and degradation prediction functions of the airborne fuel pump. Through the collaborative optimization design of software and hardware, the accuracy of the calculation results is ensured while achieving 26.32 times acceleration calculation. Provide a systematic reference solution for the engineering application of aircraft PHM system. © 2023 IEEE.
