The equipment and innovative application modes of the UAV swarms have brought new challenges to the defense and confrontation of the system. In order to achieve efficient and cost-effective balance of attack and defense, and effectively respond to the threat posed by UAV swarms. Taking airborne laser weapon anti UAV swarm as research object, the application scenarios of airborne laser weapon anti UAV swarm were systematically analyzed, stakeholders were identified, and the requirements of airborne laser weapon anti UAV swarm were captured. Provide top-level design input for the functional analysis, architecture trade-off, and design synthesis of airborne laser weapon anti UAV swarm. We have modeled and analyzed the requirements, functions, architecture, and integration of airborne laser weapon anti UAV swarm, providing effective support for technical research and project development of airborne laser weapon anti UAV swarm. The analysis suggestions for application of airborne laser weapon anti UAV swarm based on model have certain practical reference significance.

The aerospace industry has set ambitious targets to meet environmental goals while under pressure to develop novel and optimized aircraft configurations effectively. Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) are increasingly used to optimize aircraft and their systems. model-based system engineering (MBSE) methods show the potential to make the design process more effective, integrate new disciplines, and capture complex certification constraints. Today, MBSE and MDAO are not connected;different methods and tools are used, not harvesting the full potential of both approaches. This paper discusses the need for improved system architecting in the aircraft conceptual design process and introduces a framework to use MBSE in connection to MDAO. In this framework, the MBSE environment compiles system information within a system architecture specification, acting as the backbone and visual support for each stage in the systems architecting process. MDAO is used for the evaluation of system architectures. This paper presents a case study as part of the EU-funded AGILE4.0, in which the specific link between model specification in the MBSE tool Capella and a system-level MDAO workflow is explored. Overall, this paper presents a practical contribution to linking MBSE and MDAO and paves the way for better integration of MBSE into the aircraft design process, thereby enabling MBSE implementation from conceptual design onwards. Furthermore, this will enable more detailed system analysis, such as safety analysis, starting in conceptual design, based on architecture models.

The aircraft thermal management system functions to provide suitable working conditions for pilot, crew, passengers, and the other aircraft systems. The additional weight, drag and power consumption caused by it greatly influences the performance of the aircraft. However, due to rising heat load of emerging novel aircraft concepts, traditional design approaches which rely on data and empirical equations may not apply to the future thermal management systems. Many existing literature which tried to identify the optimal thermal management system architectures only considered limited architecture space where the candidates were pre-selected in terms of experience or intuition. Therefore, viable but non-intuitive architectures may not be included in the design space. To fill this gap, this paper proposes a behavior-based back-tracking methodology to systematically populate the architecture space by enumerating both intuitive and non-intuitive architectures. Thermal management requirements for traditional and novel configurations are used to generate the architectures. By comparing the generated architectures with existing ones, this paper validates that the proposed methodology is capable of generating both intuitive and non-intuitive architectures.

Hypersonic vehicles present a challenging design problem due to strong interdependencies between subsystems in the presence of significant size, weight, and power constraints. These dependencies need to be examined during the early stages of hypersonic vehicle conceptual design to identify alternative design options and specify subsystem requirements. In this work, we showcase a set of model-based systems engineering tools including the systems modeling Language, systems Operational Dependency Analysis, systems Developmental Dependency Analysis, and Robust Portfolio Optimization. These tools, when used in concert, can inform architecture design, assess potential alternatives, expose operational and developmental dependencies, and generally provide empirical data for otherwise quantitative decisions. These tools are discussed and applied to a notional hypersonic vehicle with emphasis on guidance, navigation, and control. The overall goal for this ongoing research is improving the accuracy and pace of the conceptual design of hypersonic vehicles.

The United States Naval Academy's Small Satellite Program (NASSP) has been actively developing and launching space payloads since 2001 and has involved hundreds of undergraduate students in the design, development, integration, testing, and operation aspects of space systems engineering. NASSP has launched 17 space payloads so far, including seven CubeSats, with two more manifested for launch in 2021. The Naval Academy is an undergraduate-only institution, and thus has fostered a satellite engineering program centered around projects that were purely managed and run by students. NASSP and its space system projects have become more mature and streamlined over the years where the current Capstone Design operation is very close to achieving a "One CubeSat a Year" model. The goal is to realize a streamlined design curriculum where the students will be able to experience the entire scope of a satellite system project cycle, from concept design to launch and operation. This paper will describe the challenges that such a program faces, discuss good practices learned along the way, and detail some lessons learned.

model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has emerged as a key topic of interest in the systems engineering (SE) community. With this emergence, research has been directed towards studying the application of MBSE to various concepts, processes, and issues. One such concept is how to incorporate human systems integration into MBSE practice. This paper introduces principles of human factors (HF), human systems integration (HSI), SE and MBSE. Current MBSE research in HSI application is discussed. A method of applying HSI modeling methods to model-based systems engineering (MBSE) processes is outlined. It is noted that there are many factors involved in the development of a practical MBSE method incorporating HSI. These factors should be considered in future research on a practical way to integrate SE & HSI modeling.

Progress toward adoption of model-Bases system engineering (MBSE) is challenged by data transfer incompatibilities between SE and engineering discipline models. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the addition of a translational tool to the modeling Architectures and Parameterization for Spacecraft (MAPS) environment. The translational tool takes information read from system modeling Language (SysML) diagrams and converts it into a representation suitable for the MAPS environment. MAPS users are encouraged to use SysML diagrams to define requirements, physical parameters, and interaction rules. Unfortunately, users need to manually convert this information (SysML diagrams) into MATLAB scripts before any analysis takes place. While effective, this method is time consuming, especially for new users who are unfamiliar with the environment. Past work has shown that the use of translational tools improves the effectiveness of analysis tools. Adding a translational tool enables more rapid analysis of different architectures and allows more users to interact with the MAPS environment. This study describes the creation of a translational tool for MAPS and showcases its effectiveness though the case study.

An education system for the United States Space Force (USSF) that is collaborative, comprehensive, and innovative will better prepare young professionals for a career in national space security and defense, which is a rapidly evolving work environment. With the creation of the U.S. Space Force on December 20(th), 2019, now is the time to consider how to establish a more synergistic collaboration between industry, academia, and the Department of Defense (DoD), specifically regarding multidisciplinary, space-related education. Consideration of this approach is warranted since all sectors of the space enterprise (academia, industry, and government) will substantially benefit from this collaboration. In addition, if a new professional development methodology is not implemented, the DoD may face some of the same challenges that existed in the early years of the United States Air Force (USAF) education system in the 1940s and 1950s. This paper outlines: 1) historical challenges encountered in a military education system for a new branch of military service;2) engineering principles related to the concept and development of enterprise systems (particularly education systems);3) the application of those principles in conjunction with exceptional experiential and pedagogical practices;and 4) a broader and more innovative methodology to develop a United States Space Force Collaborative Education system (USSF CES).

model based systems engineering (MBSE) approaches are rapidly spreading among organizations and industries due to all their claimed benefits over traditional documentbased approaches. Benefits include for instance enhanced design quality of systems, clearer development of system requirements and specifications and improved communications within the design teams. Currently, MBSE methods and tools are mainly employed to successfully develop complex systems, such as aircraft or its components. However, this paper proposes to adopt MBSE also in the design of development systems, which aim to design complex systems. In particular, this paper focuses on the first activities of a typical systems engineering Product Development process: identification of system stakeholders, collection of their needs and development of system requirements. The main outcome delivered from this paper is an architectural framework, i.e. a guideline for the modeling of complex systems. More specifically, the architectural framework is still under development, and hence the current version focuses on the modeling of stakeholders, needs and requirements of complex systems. The focus of the proposed architectural framework is on the agility for the definition phases of complex systems. In other words, it is developed to streamline, improve and accelerate the definition and modeling of complex systems. Details of the architectural framework including the means to represent all the system information are provided. In addition, the architectural framework for the development of complex systems is supported by an MBSE development system, currently being addressed in the EUfunded research project AGILE 4.0. The MBSE development system is presented in this paper together with an example of its application for the definition of complex systems: an horizontal tail plane for a regional jet aircraft, designed and manufactured within an aeronautical supply chain consisting of different companies.

In this era of successive crewed spaceflights, there is a dynamic need for improvement of the reliability and maintainability of the spacecrafts. One of the main drivers for the successful spacecraft is a robust and a versatile propulsion system. The design of a propulsion system requires striking the right balance between performance, reliability, and cost. The key emphasis of this study will be in the context of reliability. This study proposes a model-based framework for the Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) using systems modeling Language (SysML). This framework is exemplified on the legacy rocket engine, the RS-25, formerly known as the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). The objective of using the SSME from the space shuttle era for the Space Launch system (SLS) missions necessitates upgrades to reduce the cost of engine. Further, the upgrades will require the recertification of the engine for crewed launch. The selection of this engine for this study is subsequently driven to benefit the recertification efforts enabled through a model based Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (MBFMECA). Therefore, within the context of model based systems engineering (MBSE) the MBFMECA has been developed and detailed. The proposed framework shall compliment on-going research efforts on affordability of the RS-25 engines.
