The increase in products' complexity and level of integration lead to significant challenges in all phases of the product lifecycle. The coupling between disciplines presents compatibility and collaboration challenges that must be addressed throughout the development of a product. Indeed, organizational boundaries are known to slow the process of development and lead to more costs down the line. The definition and development of a Digital Enterprise have the potential to alleviate some of these challenges. To that end, this paper details the formulation, development and implementation of a digital enterprise across the lifecycle of a system of interest. Supported by digital enterprise visions from industry leaders, the proposed framework considers the As Designed, As Built and As Used phases of the lifecycle, and then decomposes the system at the product, component and production system levels using the Requirements-Functional-Logical-Physical (RFLP) methodology and model-based systems engineering (MBSE). For the purpose of demonstrating the implementation of the proposed framework, a minimum viable product of a small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is selected, where a Digital Thread is developed to connect the product lifecycle phases. The Digital Thread is implemented by means of a data infrastructure that is managed using a scalable and portable graph database with a REST API that supports queries from applications. The graph database stores the models and their relationships at each revision as layers. The capabilities and benefits of the proposed Digital Enterprise framework are demonstrated by linking the performance of the final physical product back to decisions made during its design and manufacturing phases, leveraging the predictive capabilities and organizational views of the digital approach outlined in this research.

Product design and supply chain management are two research domains extensively explored in literature. In the last decades, many studies have highlighted that the integration of these domains is important to increase the profitability and efficiency of companies. However, most of these studies aims at optimizing the supply chain after freezing the design of the product, and hence addressing the supply chain as the following step in product development. This paper presents a value- driven model- based approach that concurrently links product design, manufacturing and supply chain in the frame of aerospace system design. Thus, the challenge is to expand the early design phase of an aircraft to account both for manufacturing choices (e.g. raw materials, manufacturing and assembly processes) and supply chain management (e.g. suppliers' location, production cost per supplier). Three domains - manufacturing, supply chain, overall aircraft design - are selected to investigate all the aspects related to the entire aircraft development, from the initial design to the manufacturing and the assembly, through the aeronautical supply chain. The modelling of these domains and the information flow exchanged among them, is addressed in this paper. The concurrently coupling of these domains results into an enlargement of the alternatives populating the final solutions tradespace, from which decision makers select a solution. The value-based approach is proposed to quantify the multiple-choice criteria and support decision makers in selecting the best alternative, simultaneously considering the aircraft design variables with those of manufacturing and supply chain. Thus, the objective of the value driven model-based approach introduced in this paper, is to provide a quantitative supportive framework that decision makers could use during the early phases of aircraft development, when strategic decisions have to be taken. This study presents a carefully optimized, conventionally configured replacement for the B757-200 aircraft. While the B757-200 was originally engineered as a short-to-medium haul airliner with excellent field performance, it has blossomed as an aircraft well suited for North American transcontinental flights, Hawaii flights and "thin" North Atlantic flights. In this study, we seek to provide a design that offers significant efficiency boost over the B757, while balancing customer requirements between a current North American operator (American Airlines) and the B757 European launch customer (British Airways). We optimized the design using a model-based-systems-engineering (MBSE) approach using Phoenix Integration's modelCenter. The final design achieved 15% improvements in efficiency at minimum against current benchmark aircraft, enhanced payload/range capacity, and ready compliance with applicable FAA and EASA regulations.

model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has emerged as a key topic of interest in the systems engineering (SE) community. With this emergence, research has been directed towards studying the application of MBSE to various concepts, processes, and issues. One such concept is how to incorporate human systems integration into MBSE practice. This paper introduces principles of human factors (HF), human systems integration (HSI), SE and MBSE. Current MBSE research in HSI application is discussed. A method of applying HSI modeling methods to model-based systems engineering (MBSE) processes is outlined. It is noted that there are many factors involved in the development of a practical MBSE method incorporating HSI. These factors should be considered in future research on a practical way to integrate SE & HSI modeling.

model based systems engineering (MBSE) approaches are rapidly spreading among organizations and industries due to all their claimed benefits over traditional documentbased approaches. Benefits include for instance enhanced design quality of systems, clearer development of system requirements and specifications and improved communications within the design teams. Currently, MBSE methods and tools are mainly employed to successfully develop complex systems, such as aircraft or its components. However, this paper proposes to adopt MBSE also in the design of development systems, which aim to design complex systems. In particular, this paper focuses on the first activities of a typical systems engineering Product Development process: identification of system stakeholders, collection of their needs and development of system requirements. The main outcome delivered from this paper is an architectural framework, i.e. a guideline for the modeling of complex systems. More specifically, the architectural framework is still under development, and hence the current version focuses on the modeling of stakeholders, needs and requirements of complex systems. The focus of the proposed architectural framework is on the agility for the definition phases of complex systems. In other words, it is developed to streamline, improve and accelerate the definition and modeling of complex systems. Details of the architectural framework including the means to represent all the system information are provided. In addition, the architectural framework for the development of complex systems is supported by an MBSE development system, currently being addressed in the EUfunded research project AGILE 4.0. The MBSE development system is presented in this paper together with an example of its application for the definition of complex systems: an horizontal tail plane for a regional jet aircraft, designed and manufactured within an aeronautical supply chain consisting of different companies.

The aerospace industry has set ambitious targets to meet environmental goals while under pressure to develop novel and optimized aircraft configurations effectively. Multidisciplinary Design Analysis and Optimization (MDAO) are increasingly used to optimize aircraft and their systems. model-based system engineering (MBSE) methods show the potential to make the design process more effective, integrate new disciplines, and capture complex certification constraints. Today, MBSE and MDAO are not connected;different methods and tools are used, not harvesting the full potential of both approaches. This paper discusses the need for improved system architecting in the aircraft conceptual design process and introduces a framework to use MBSE in connection to MDAO. In this framework, the MBSE environment compiles system information within a system architecture specification, acting as the backbone and visual support for each stage in the systems architecting process. MDAO is used for the evaluation of system architectures. This paper presents a case study as part of the EU-funded AGILE4.0, in which the specific link between model specification in the MBSE tool Capella and a system-level MDAO workflow is explored. Overall, this paper presents a practical contribution to linking MBSE and MDAO and paves the way for better integration of MBSE into the aircraft design process, thereby enabling MBSE implementation from conceptual design onwards. Furthermore, this will enable more detailed system analysis, such as safety analysis, starting in conceptual design, based on architecture models.

The success path for development of complex propulsive systems for launch vehicles such as the Space Launch system (SLS) is driven by an optimal balance between performance, reliability, and cost. In the past decade, the application of technology and innovation for complex propulsive systems transcends launch vehicle development towards increased affordability and safety. Consequently, this study is aimed to compliment an on-going effort to establish a model-based platform for the RS-25 engine to deliver affordability. The candidature of this engine for the study is driven by the need to restart its production adapting newer technologies and reduce its cost. Utilizing the paradigms of model based systems engineering (MBSE), the structural architecture and a model- based platform to perform Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) has been previously modeled and developed in systems modeling Language (SysML). The emphasis of this study is proposed to extend the model-based reliability framework to include the behavioral aspects of the RS-25 engine (performance of the engine, test strategies, design change implementation and outcomes etc.,). The progressive efforts have been detailed and outcomes have been discussed to develop a comprehensive affordability platform for the RS-25 engine.

In this era of successive crewed spaceflights, there is a dynamic need for improvement of the reliability and maintainability of the spacecrafts. One of the main drivers for the successful spacecraft is a robust and a versatile propulsion system. The design of a propulsion system requires striking the right balance between performance, reliability, and cost. The key emphasis of this study will be in the context of reliability. This study proposes a model-based framework for the Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) using systems modeling Language (SysML). This framework is exemplified on the legacy rocket engine, the RS-25, formerly known as the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). The objective of using the SSME from the space shuttle era for the Space Launch system (SLS) missions necessitates upgrades to reduce the cost of engine. Further, the upgrades will require the recertification of the engine for crewed launch. The selection of this engine for this study is subsequently driven to benefit the recertification efforts enabled through a model based Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis (MBFMECA). Therefore, within the context of model based systems engineering (MBSE) the MBFMECA has been developed and detailed. The proposed framework shall compliment on-going research efforts on affordability of the RS-25 engines.

Theoretical value and actual value of a process or method rarely match. The gap lies in the difference between promised outcomes and realized outcomes. The return on investment (ROI) achieved by implementing a new or different strategy or practice will generally fall short of initial expectations and potential. Carrying out a Digital Transformation (DTx) in a technology business, including model based engineering (MBE), holds the promise of great rewards and efficiencies to any such organization that desires to employ its practice. Aerospace systems are increasing in complexity. That is not all, the demand for available affordable, and producible systems is increasing as well. MBE offers the solution to both of these competing trends with its potential for developing feasible solutions on times scales of months rather than years. It must be remembered that the eventual ROI of the DTx will vary depending on how it is managed and implemented. Many barriers are likely to arise to keep MBE from being practiced properly and the unsurprising poor results are vulnerable to be used as proof that MBE does not work. This circumstance casts an undeserved shadow on MBE itself and thus brands it with an unwarranted stigma. An inappropriate implementation of MBE may be more harmful than traditional engineering approaches. However, a well-planned phased implementation of MBE practices is likely to succeed. The previous ingrained culture of an organization performing a DTx must be considered and not ignored. An analogy to the modern personal transportation industry is developed to illustrate a roadmap of how an organization might successfully achieve MBE in their processes as part of the larger DTx.
