The United States Naval Academy's Small Satellite Program (NASSP) has been actively developing and launching space payloads since 2001 and has involved hundreds of undergraduate students in the design, development, integration, testing, and operation aspects of space systems engineering. NASSP has launched 17 space payloads so far, including seven CubeSats, with two more manifested for launch in 2021. The Naval Academy is an undergraduate-only institution, and thus has fostered a satellite engineering program centered around projects that were purely managed and run by students. NASSP and its space system projects have become more mature and streamlined over the years where the current Capstone Design operation is very close to achieving a "One CubeSat a Year" model. The goal is to realize a streamlined design curriculum where the students will be able to experience the entire scope of a satellite system project cycle, from concept design to launch and operation. This paper will describe the challenges that such a program faces, discuss good practices learned along the way, and detail some lessons learned.

An education system for the United States Space Force (USSF) that is collaborative, comprehensive, and innovative will better prepare young professionals for a career in national space security and defense, which is a rapidly evolving work environment. With the creation of the U.S. Space Force on December 20(th), 2019, now is the time to consider how to establish a more synergistic collaboration between industry, academia, and the Department of Defense (DoD), specifically regarding multidisciplinary, space-related education. Consideration of this approach is warranted since all sectors of the space enterprise (academia, industry, and government) will substantially benefit from this collaboration. In addition, if a new professional development methodology is not implemented, the DoD may face some of the same challenges that existed in the early years of the United States Air Force (USAF) education system in the 1940s and 1950s. This paper outlines: 1) historical challenges encountered in a military education system for a new branch of military service;2) engineering principles related to the concept and development of enterprise systems (particularly education systems);3) the application of those principles in conjunction with exceptional experiential and pedagogical practices;and 4) a broader and more innovative methodology to develop a United States Space Force Collaborative Education system (USSF CES).

Decisions regarding the system architecture are important and taken early in the design process, however suffer from large design spaces and expert bias. systematic design space exploration techniques, like optimization, can be applied to system architecting. Realistic engineering benchmark problems are needed to enable development of optimization algorithms that can successfully solve these black-box, hierarchical, mixed-discrete, multi-objective architecture optimization problems. Such benchmark problems support the development of more capable optimization algorithms, more suitable methods for modeling system architecture design space, and educating engineers and other stakeholders on system architecture optimization in general. In this paper, an engine architecting benchmark problem is presented that exhibits all this behavior and is based on the open-source simulation tools pyCycle and OpenMDAO. Next to thermodynamic cycle analysis, the proposed benchmark problem includes modules for the estimation of engine weight, length, diameter, noise and NOx emissions. The problem is defined using modular interfaces, allowing to tune the complexity of the problem, by varying the number of design variables, objectives and constraints. The benchmark problem is validated by comparing to pyCycle example cases and existing engine performance data, and demonstrated using both a simple and a realistic problem formulation, solved using the multiobjective NSGA-II algorithm. It is shown that realistic results can be obtained, even though the design space is subject to hidden constraints due to the engine evaluation not converging for all design points.

A Monitoring Framework with Integrated Sensing Technologies for Enhanced Food Safety and Traceability

A novel and low-cost framework for food traceability, composed by commercial and proprietary sensing devices, for the remote monitoring of air, water, soil parameters and herbicide contamination during the farming process, has been developed and verified in real crop environments. It offers an integrated approach to food traceability with embedded systems supervision, approaching the problem to testify the quality of the food product. Moreover, it fills the gap of missing low-cost systems for monitoring cropping environments and pesticides contamination, satisfying the wide interest of regulatory agencies and final customers for a sustainable farming. The novelty of the proposed monitoring framework lies in the realization and the adoption of a fully automated prototype for in situ glyphosate detection. This device consists of a custom-made and automated fluidic system which, leveraging on the Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP) sensing technology, permits to detect unwanted glyphosate contamination. The custom electronic mainboard, called ElectroSense, exhibits both the potentiostatic read-out of the sensor and the fluidic control to accomplish continuous unattended measurements. The complementary monitored parameters from commercial sensing devices are: temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, volumetric water content, electrical conductivity of the soil, pH of the irrigation water, total Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and equivalent CO2. The framework has been validated during the olive farming activity in an Italian company, proving its efficacy for food traceability. Finally, the system has been adopted in a different crop field where pesticides treatments are practiced. This has been done in order to prove its capability to perform first level detection of pesticide treatments. Good correlation results between chemical sensors signals and pesticides treatments are highlighted.

In large engineering projects, multiplicity and heterogeneity of business actors, domain and business constraints, and stakeholders’ needs become more and more difficult to manage and are even moving. To allow projects members to converge in confidence, reducing time, costs and avoiding risky situations due to errors, misinterpretations, or omission, model based system engineering (MBSE) replaces today the classical documents centric engineering approach. It promotes modeling, models and data management principles that are largely used in several domains with success. This article focuses on Nuclear Infrastructure engineering projects. It intends to demonstrate the interest of deploying MBSE approach in this field, particularly concerning architectural solutions evaluation. Main principles and application results of an MBSE driven method called EVA-CIME are proposed, presenting some gains and perspectives.

Genetic-Algorithm-based Design for Rideshare and Heterogeneous Constellations

Responsive and resilient space-based systems are needed to satisfy changing mission requirements and react to unforeseen challenges. Nontraditional constellations, such as heterogeneous and rideshare constellations, have the potential to increase resiliency and responsiveness, as can using commercial off-the-shelf parts. However, these constellation types introduce design challenges that cannot be solved by analytical techniques. A novel methodology for optimizing these constellations using a multi-objective genetic algorithm and model-based systems engineering techniques is introduced. Included in this methodology are new techniques for measuring constellation resiliency and rapidly determining reachability between two orbits. The methodology is applied to a validation case of designing a Mars-orbiting position, navigation, timing, and communications constellation. The methodology is then used to examine the viability of using rideshare opportunities to construct a satellite constellation. The constellation must provide regional imaging coverage in the event of a natural disaster, and its efficacy is evaluated both in the nominal case and in the case when multiple satellites have failed.

A Unified model-based Framework for the Simplified Execution of Static and Dynamic Assertion-based Verification

The improved productivity and reduced time-to-market are essential requirements for the development of modern embedded systems and, therefore, the comprehensive as well as timely design verification is critical. Assertion based Verification (ABV) is a renowned paradigm to timely achieve an optimum test coverage, either through static or dynamic techniques. However, the major limitation with ABV is its inherited low-level implementation complexity. In order to simplify its execution, various model based system engineering approaches provide a higher abstraction layer. Nevertheless, the complete verification requirements, targeting the static as well as dynamic ABV at the same time in a unified framework, are not being addressed. Furthermore, the dynamic verification support is provided through some traditional languages (like C, Verilog) where the advanced ABV features cannot be exploited. Consequently, this article introduces the MODEVES (model-based DEsign Verification for Embedded systems) framework to simultaneously support the static and dynamic ABV. Particularly, the UML (Unified modeling Language) and SysML (systems modeling Language) diagrams are used to model the structural and behavioral requirements. Moreover, the NLCTL (Natural Language for Computation Tree Logic) is proposed to include the verification requirements for static ABV while the SVOCL (systemVerilog in Object Constraint Language) is used to represent the dynamic verification constraints. An open source transformation engine is developed to automatically generate the systemVerilog Register Transfer Level (RTL) code, Timed Automata model, systemVerilog assertions and Computation Tree Logic (CTL) assertions with minimum transformation losses. The significance of the MODEVES framework is established through several case studies and the quantitative analysis shows an improvement of almost 100% in design productivity, as compared to the conventional low-level implementations.

New technologies and complex systems are being developed in commercial aviation to meet strict requirements regarding fuel consumption, emissions and noise constraints. This motivates the development of multidisciplinary environments to efficiently manage the increasing complexity of the design process. Under the Clean Sky 2 initiative, the modellIng and Simulation tools for systems IntegratiON on Aircraft (MISSION) project aims to develop an integrated framework to holistically support the aircraft design, development and validation processes. Within the MISSION framework, this paper proposes a methodology to handle the integration between the aircraft level and the system level in the early phase of aircraft design. The methodology is demonstrated for the case of the Landing Gear system in the rejected take-off scenario.

The ongoing global digital revolution is transforming all aspects of product development, delivery, operation, and support. Driven by cyber-physical technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud Computing, Big Data Analytics, Digital engineering, and Digital Manufacturing it enables transforming current document-centric processes to a digital, connected, model-based systems engineering environment involving all the advances of the new cyber-physical world. Concepts for transforming ground and flight testing of aeronautical systems employing digital engineering principles and practices are introduced. A value metric for testing based on the quantification and planned mitigation of uncertainty of technical performance measures (TPM) is introduced. Traditional model validation by comparing model output with experimental data is transformed into an improved predictive capability using an integrated validation and calibration process for a digital surrogate response surface model using all heterogeneous data available. Approaches to using quantified margins and uncertainties for TPMs derived from calibrated digital surrogates to project the best way to master risk and reduce the time to achieve an operational capability are also presented. Concepts for digital engineering-enabled innovative approaches to air vehicles development and operation are outlined.
