Digital engineering Development in an Academic CubeSat Project

Digital engineering is increasingly introduced for managing and supporting the development of systems for space. However, few academic teams have the competency needed to manage projects using digital engineering and systems engineering. The subject of this paper is an academic CubeSat project in which a variety of digital engineering techniques are used. The tailoring that has been applied to fit the academic environment including students from different disciplines and levels of maturity is described. This paper shows how a customized Scrum methodology for hardware and software integrated with a workflow in a digital tool environment has given positive results for both the team and the system development. This paper also discusses how to introduce new members to the team and how to train them to work with digital engineering as a multidisciplinary team. This paper presents how the systems engineering and project management activities have been integrated into the academic CubeSat project, evaluate how well this fusion worked, and estimate its potential to be used as a guide for other digital engineering projects.

A Monitoring Framework with Integrated Sensing Technologies for Enhanced Food Safety and Traceability

A novel and low-cost framework for food traceability, composed by commercial and proprietary sensing devices, for the remote monitoring of air, water, soil parameters and herbicide contamination during the farming process, has been developed and verified in real crop environments. It offers an integrated approach to food traceability with embedded systems supervision, approaching the problem to testify the quality of the food product. Moreover, it fills the gap of missing low-cost systems for monitoring cropping environments and pesticides contamination, satisfying the wide interest of regulatory agencies and final customers for a sustainable farming. The novelty of the proposed monitoring framework lies in the realization and the adoption of a fully automated prototype for in situ glyphosate detection. This device consists of a custom-made and automated fluidic system which, leveraging on the Molecularly Imprinted Polymer (MIP) sensing technology, permits to detect unwanted glyphosate contamination. The custom electronic mainboard, called ElectroSense, exhibits both the potentiostatic read-out of the sensor and the fluidic control to accomplish continuous unattended measurements. The complementary monitored parameters from commercial sensing devices are: temperature, relative humidity, atmospheric pressure, volumetric water content, electrical conductivity of the soil, pH of the irrigation water, total Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and equivalent CO2. The framework has been validated during the olive farming activity in an Italian company, proving its efficacy for food traceability. Finally, the system has been adopted in a different crop field where pesticides treatments are practiced. This has been done in order to prove its capability to perform first level detection of pesticide treatments. Good correlation results between chemical sensors signals and pesticides treatments are highlighted.

It is important for a systems architect to be able to “zoom in” and “zoom out” different levels of details, i.e., to see the enterprise and business level views as well as to go into details of systems and different components of systems. The enterprise knowledge and information systems are two fundamentally different disciplines. An intermediary approach that can connect the two bi-directionally can be very useful in such scenarios. This short paper proposes an intermediary modeling approach that can provide means to computer assisted creation of higher-level business architectural artifacts, that can hold business meaning for the upper management, as well as information system meta-model descriptions that can be used for MBSE (model based system engineering) approaches to develop concrete software systems. This would allow enterprise planning at intermediary level to provide upstream and downstream independence. This preliminary research uses a computer aided planning environment that has repository of multi-disciplinary patterns at different levels of detail for rapid development of these models, capturing various views and viewpoints in a step by step manner.

To reduce development time and introduce technologies faster to the market, many companies have been moving to model-based system engineering (MBSE). In MBSE, the development process centers around a multi-physics model of the complete system being developed, from requirements to design, implementation and test. Engineers can avoid a generation of system design processes based on hand coding, and use graphical models to design, analyze, and implement the software that determines system performance and behavior. This paper describes the process implemented in Autonomie, a Plug-and-Play Software Environment, to design and evaluate electric drive powertrain and component technologies in a multi-physics environment. We will discuss best practices and provide examples of the different steps of the V-diagram including model-in-the-loop, software-in-the-loop and component-in-the-loop simulation.

In addition to inheriting concepts and methodological principles from system engineering, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) emphasizes the role of modelling and models in engineering processes. Different types of models are then constructed and used, each being a digital representation of a system that is undeniably partial, but also necessary. It highlights and enables the analysis of certain characteristics of this system, e.g. its behaviour, its functions or its composition to make relevant design choices. Digital Twins are the ultimate representation of a system, expected to be faithful and realistic for the purpose they serve, as well as to be connected and synchronized to the modelled physical asset. Hence, they support stakeholders to manage, train or optimize the target system when implemented and put into operation. However, defining and engineering Digital Twins remains a difficult process, with little methodology available to build and ensure it remains faithful to a continuously evolving reality. MBSE provides concepts and a methodological framework that are well adapted to solve complex engineering problems with many constraints. This position paper introduces a MBSE based Digital Twin engineering framework foundation, applied to an manufacturing system.

Analytical modeling Framework and Applications for Space Communication Networks

There is a growing number of resource-constrained small satellites that are currently performing and are proposed to accomplish novel science and technology missions. These missions seek to download large quantities of data to ground-station networks that currently have limited ability to support these missions. This limitation motivates the development of modeling and simulation tools to assess and optimize these mission scenarios. In this paper, we develop an extensible, analytical modeling framework for satellite operations. This framework captures dynamic states, subsystem functions, and interactions of the satellite with the external environment and ground-communication networks. This foundational framework enables assessment and optimization of complex space and ground networks under both deterministic and stochastic conditions. We apply this framework to develop a communication-focused model for an operational satellite mission. We implement the analytical model in a simulation environment and use realistic data from the surveyed small-satellite and ground-station community to assess the impact of satellite and network parameters on the potential for communication. Our simulations compare satellite downlink requirements and objectives with the constraint-based communication potential of diverse missions and ground networks. These results identify deficient and excess capabilities and motivate the need for optimal scheduling algorithms.

In designing, verifying, and validating distributed systems today, an engineer is often faced with having to specify a system multiple times. For example, the engineer might specify it once in a model-checker for formal analysis, in an architectural description language for requirements analysis, and in a programming language for testing. By specifying the same system multiple times, there is risk that each specification has different semantics, so that the system tested differs from the one verified, for example. To help solve this problem, we envision an architectural domain-specific language (ADSL), or a unified language from which formal models, executable code, and architectural models can be synthesized. To make our problem tractable, we focus on distributed fault-tolerant systems. We present the Language for Integrated modeling and Analysis (LIMA), a particular ADSL that we have designed. We describe LIMA and its application to case studies motivated by avionics design.

In large engineering projects, multiplicity and heterogeneity of business actors, domain and business constraints, and stakeholders’ needs become more and more difficult to manage and are even moving. To allow projects members to converge in confidence, reducing time, costs and avoiding risky situations due to errors, misinterpretations, or omission, model based system engineering (MBSE) replaces today the classical documents centric engineering approach. It promotes modeling, models and data management principles that are largely used in several domains with success. This article focuses on Nuclear Infrastructure engineering projects. It intends to demonstrate the interest of deploying MBSE approach in this field, particularly concerning architectural solutions evaluation. Main principles and application results of an MBSE driven method called EVA-CIME are proposed, presenting some gains and perspectives.

This paper discusses a research project to support virtual design and verification of industrial process plant designs. Process plants are a class of cyber-physical systems (CPS), and these research results should generally apply to other types of CPS such as those associated with the Smart Grid. modeling is an essential part of process plant design and integral in other applications such as manufacturing. models produced in design have obvious roles in system implementation, deployment and certification. For manufacturing systems, models also have use in downstream activities including system certification, performance optimization, real-time diagnostics and prognostics, and maintenance. The paper discusses the results associated with a prototype that uses domain-specific models of different views of a system design that improves collaboration through integrated models and aligned semantics and provides examples of how the integration with formal methods can identify defects in designs, and automatically generate test vectors with requirement-to-test traceability.

Airborne flight management system (FMS) with the ability in aspects of navigation, flight planning and guidance is one of the core subsystems in the modern avionics system, assisting the pilots in managing the entire flight and relieving the crews from the heavy workload as well. The essential role of the FMS requires the high quality performance in all-phase development especially in the function design. However, the textual design documents are utilized as media in the traditional document based methodology to be transferred to the downstream hardware/software development. One of the problems is the lack of ability to track the requirement efficiently in all lifecycle development. Another one is the ambiguity problem introduced by the textual description. In addition, the design output in terms of multi related documents may increase the inconsistence possibility when any modification is required. Therefore, it attempts to introduce the method of model based system engineering (MBSE) using the system modeling language in the FMS design process to increase the trace ability and furthermore the product quality. The author then tries to use the integrated navigation function of FMS as an example to implement the new method in the design process, as the entire flight management system is a high complicated and multidiscipline covered system.
