systematic modeling of architecture design spaces is needed when architecting complex systems, to support experts in making less biased decisions, and to formulate the optimization problem needed to explore the large combinatorial design space. Existing methods do not offer enough compatibility with the model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approaches, cannot model all needed design scenarios, or are not flexible enough when it comes to architecture evaluation. A new method is presented that provides a semantic representation of the architecture design space, modeled as the Architecture Design Space Graph (ADSG). The ADSG represents three types of architectural decisions: function-component mapping, component characterization, and component connection. The ADSG is constructed from a design space definition, and discrete architectural decisions are automatically inserted according to specified rules. Once decisions and metrics have been defined, the hierarchical, mixed-integer, multi-objective optimization problem can be formulated: decisions are mapped to design variables, and performance metrics are mapped to objectives or constraints. An application of the method to the Apollo mission architecting problem is presented.

In the context of PLATO Camera Subsystem development, it has been decided to take advantage of MBSE methodologies using Enterprise Architect by Sparx systems as tool. A Local SysML Camera model for PLATO mission(1) has been built from different Excel spreadsheets, i.e. Verification Control Matrices, released by Subsystems. Same approach has been used for the Camera-system itself. The complete flow-down of requirements has been created in order to easily identify and monitor any impact on the design due to changes, deviations and non-compliances. The model can be updated at any time importing Excel spreadsheet while it can be used as source to export documentation needed during formal reviews, both as Word and Excel files. In addition, model architecture and constraints have been created through Block Definition Diagram and Internal Block Diagram so that structure, interfaces as well as interaction between different items, can be easily identified and monitored at both system and Subsystem level.

As aircraft architectures become more modern, complex, and unique, it will be more difficult to ensure their compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations throughout design, manufacturing, and operation. For an aircraft to be certified it must receive Type Certification from the FAA. This is a process which produces documentation that includes the proposed operating environment, certification basis, a compliance demonstration plan, and other compliance records. Prior work by the authors demonstrated a model-based framework for the management of these certification artifacts for normal category airplanes. In more recent work, the framework was expanded and adapted to consider certification for transport category airplanes regulated under 14 CFR Part 25, providing clear transparency and traceability between the text of the regulations and imposed requirements. Ultimately, this led to a framework with the ability to identify potential gaps in the applicability of regulations for novel architectures such as electrified aircraft. The potential gaps are identified based on mismatches between the functional intent and the corresponding prescribed physical implementation of the aircraft architecture at hand. This work implements the model-based regulatory framework on a set of case studies to observe it's capability for sample traditional, all electric, and hybrid electric architectures.

The value proposition of implementing an active digital curation capability within an aerospace system product development life cycle is qualitatively examined. This first evaluation is necessary to incentivize methodology demonstration and software development tailored for a science and technology ecosystem. For complex digital ecosystems, active digital curation and resourcing of the appropriate infrastructure is necessary to accelerate secure sharing of digital materiel across diverse stakeholder groups. Digital curation use cases are examined for specific domains involving modeling and simulation, ground testing, and flight testing activities. Experience generating and curating artifacts for these use cases suggests that active digital curation is useful for informing near-term digital product development and enabling longer-term digital materiel management. Existing examples of digital curation life cycles are examined and discussed. As the time horizon increases, active digital curation may be viewed as an enabling capability for digital materiel management, and becomes a critical-path activity for accelerating digital concept maturation and transition to stakeholders. Active digital curation functionality should be considered as a fundamental requirement for an organization's digital transformation to augment passive knowledge management best practices.

In large engineering projects, multiplicity and heterogeneity of business actors, domain and business constraints, and stakeholders' needs become more and more difficult to manage and are even moving. To allow projects members to converge in confidence, reducing time, costs and avoiding risky situations due to errors, misinterpretations, or omission, model based system engineering (MBSE) replaces today the classical documents centric engineering approach. It promotes modeling, models and data management principles that are largely used in several domains with success. This article focuses on Nuclear Infrastructure engineering projects. It intends to demonstrate the interest of deploying MBSE approach in this field, particularly concerning architectural solutions evaluation. Main principles and application results of an MBSE driven method called EVA-CIME are proposed, presenting some gains and perspectives. Copyright (C) 2022 The Authors.

The modeling Architectures and Parameterization for Spacecraft (MAPS) environment was created to realize the model-based systems engineering (MBSE) philosophy for spacecraft applications. MAPS combines the systems modeling Language (SysML) for initial templates and requirements, system parametric sizing, and optimization in order to model space architectures. Further, it employs system-of-systems engineering practices for architectural analysis (e.g. complexity and flexibility metrics) and also integrates orbital trajectory analysis for mission simulations. The environment has potential to improve efficiency and completeness in studies of spacecraft constellations;on-orbit servicing, assembly, and manufacturing;or other emerging concepts. In addition to detailing the above features, this paper demonstrates the use of MAPS with low-Earth orbit satellite constellation study.

model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has emerged as a key topic of interest in the systems engineering (SE) community. With this emergence, research has been directed towards studying the application of MBSE to various concepts, processes, and issues. One such concept is how to incorporate human systems integration into MBSE practice. This paper introduces principles of human factors (HF), human systems integration (HSI), SE and MBSE. Current MBSE research in HSI application is discussed. A method of applying HSI modeling methods to model-based systems engineering (MBSE) processes is outlined. It is noted that there are many factors involved in the development of a practical MBSE method incorporating HSI. These factors should be considered in future research on a practical way to integrate SE & HSI modeling.

The United States Naval Academy's Small Satellite Program (NASSP) has been actively developing and launching space payloads since 2001 and has involved hundreds of undergraduate students in the design, development, integration, testing, and operation aspects of space systems engineering. NASSP has launched 17 space payloads so far, including seven CubeSats, with two more manifested for launch in 2021. The Naval Academy is an undergraduate-only institution, and thus has fostered a satellite engineering program centered around projects that were purely managed and run by students. NASSP and its space system projects have become more mature and streamlined over the years where the current Capstone Design operation is very close to achieving a "One CubeSat a Year" model. The goal is to realize a streamlined design curriculum where the students will be able to experience the entire scope of a satellite system project cycle, from concept design to launch and operation. This paper will describe the challenges that such a program faces, discuss good practices learned along the way, and detail some lessons learned.

Hypersonic vehicles present a challenging design problem due to strong interdependencies between subsystems in the presence of significant size, weight, and power constraints. These dependencies need to be examined during the early stages of hypersonic vehicle conceptual design to identify alternative design options and specify subsystem requirements. In this work, we showcase a set of model-based systems engineering tools including the systems modeling Language, systems Operational Dependency Analysis, systems Developmental Dependency Analysis, and Robust Portfolio Optimization. These tools, when used in concert, can inform architecture design, assess potential alternatives, expose operational and developmental dependencies, and generally provide empirical data for otherwise quantitative decisions. These tools are discussed and applied to a notional hypersonic vehicle with emphasis on guidance, navigation, and control. The overall goal for this ongoing research is improving the accuracy and pace of the conceptual design of hypersonic vehicles.

This article outlines the need to implement a global method to secure the project delivery of Nuclear Infrastructures. This method articulates and put in light various concepts issued from Value Analysis, system Architecting and system engineering. Particularly, it has to be based on appropriate modelling hypotheses promoted in model based system engineering (MBSE) context. This article focuses particularly on collaborative issues of helping engineers to remain aware about and able to exchange without ambiguities, ideas, principles, data, information and knowledge that are gathered by other actors in charge of respectively, system Architecting and system engineering phases. The method is presented through a first set of common concepts and relations between concepts, disambiguated and formalised that will be used in a concrete Nuclear infrastructure development project.
