The vision of the MDSD is an era of software engineering where modelling completely replaces programming i.e. the systems are entirely generated from high-level models, each one specifying a different view of the same system. The MDSD can be seen as the new generation of visual programming languages which provides methods and tools to streamline the process of software engineering. Productivity of the development process is significantly improved by the MDSD approach and it also increases the quality of the resulting software system. The MDSD is particularly suited for those software applications which require highly specialized technical knowledge due to the involvement of complex technologies and the large number of complex and unmanageable standards. In this paper, an overview of the MDSD is presented;the working styles and the main concepts are illustrated in detail.

A didactic approach into teaching model-driven software development (MDSD) is proposed in this paper. The main idea is to focus on conveying underlying concepts, rather than managing a concrete tool or presenting a purely theoretical approach, when teaching MDSD. This objective shall be reached by the development of a simple code generator by the students. For this reason the whole process from graphical modeling to the actual code generation is traversed twice. The first time from back to front to introduce the main concepts of a code generator engine and in a second pass from the beginning to extend the generator by additional functionality. The course will then be completed by transferring the knowledge learnt to a concrete generator tool within the framework of a simple exercise and by a presentation.

Transforming and tracing reused requirements models to home automation models

Context: model-driven software development (MDSD) has emerged as a very promising approach to cope with the inherent complexity of modern software-based systems. Furthermore, it is well known that the Requirements Engineering (RE) stage is critical for a project's success. Despite the importance of RE, MDSD approaches commonly leave textual requirements specifications to one side. Objective: Our aim is to integrate textual requirements specifications into the MDSD approach by using the MDSD techniques themselves, including metamodelling and model transformations. The proposal is based on the assumption that a reuse-based model-driven Requirements Engineering (MDRE) approach will improve the requirements engineering stage, the quality of the development models generated from requirements models, and will enable the traces from requirements to other development concepts (such as analysis or design) to be maintained. Method: The approach revolves around the Requirements Engineering Metamodel, denominated as REMM, which supports the definition of the boilerplate based textual requirements specification languages needed for the definition of model transformation from application requirements models to platform-specific application models and code. Results: The approach has been evaluated through its application to Home Automation (HA) systems. The HA Requirement Specification Language denominated as HAREL is used to define application requirements models which will be automatically transformed and traced to the application model conforming to the HA Domain Specific Language. Conclusions: An anonymous online survey has been conducted to evaluate the degree of acceptance by both HA application developers and MDSD practitioners. The main conclusion is that 66.7% of the HA experts polled strongly agree that the automatic transformation of the requirements models to HA models improves the quality of the HA models. An emerging approach to software development is model driven software development (MDSD). It shifts the focus from source code to models, aims at cost reduction, risk mitigation, and eases the engineering of complex applications. System models can be used in the early development stages to verify certain relevant properties, such as performance, before source code is available and problems become hard and costly to solve. The present status of model driven Engineering (MDE) is still far from this ideal situation. A well-known problem is feedback provisioning, which arises when different solutions for the same design problem exist. An approach for feedback provisioning automation leverages model transformations, which glue together models in an MDSD setting, encapsulate the design rationale, and promote knowledge reuse and solutions otherwise available only to experienced engineers. In this article we present QVTR(2), our solution to the feedback problem. QVTR(2) is an extension of the QVT-Relations language with constructs to express design alternatives, their impact on non-functional metrics, and how to evaluate them and guide the engineers in the selection of the most appropriate solution. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our solution by using the QVTR(2) engine to perform a modified version of the standard UML-to-RDBMS transformation in the context of a real e-commerce application, and by showing how we can guide a non-expert engineer in the selection of a solution that satisfies given performance requirements.

This paper describes UML-based foundations for model driven architecture and forward engineering of UML static models. In this paper, we propose an integrated environment for designing object-oriented enterprise models. In this projected process for Fast Prototyping, we design object models like use case diagram, sequence diagram, class diagram, etc. We use object-oriented conceptual modeling techniques to design and develop various applications like E-commerce, Banking, Comparison shopping, Ticketing, Online insurance policy management, product purchase system, etc. This paper suggests forward engineering to generate source code from object models through IBM Rational Rose software. This object oriented source code help software development team from analysis to maintenance phase as well as for round trip engineering. Due to high security concern, we have to use highly secure operating systems as a platform to run these web applications. In this regard, a number of trusted operating systems like Argus, Trusted Solaris, and Virtual Vault have been developed by various companies to handle the increasing need of security. The novel integration of security engineering with model-driven software expansion approach has various advantages. As we observe that all security checks in a Trusted Operating System is not necessary. Some non-essential security checks can be skipped by administrator to increase system performance. These non essential security checks can be easily identified at the time of requirement analysis. For example, the majority of web servers deal with pure public information. The majority of data on a web server is publicly readable and available to all users, but these users should not be capable to change the data on the web server. In this application, the need for security checks during reads from disk seems like a waste of CPU cycles. development and deployment technologies for data-intensive web applications have considerably evolved in the last years. Domain specific frameworks or model-driven Web Engineering approaches are examples of these technologies. They have made possible to face implicit problems of these systems such as quick evolving business rules or severe time-to-market requirements. Both approaches propose the automation of redundant development tasks as the key factor for their success. The implementation of CRUD operations is a clear example of repetitive and recurrent task that may be automated. However, although web application frameworks have provided mechanisms to automate the implementation of CRUD operations, model-driven Web Engineering approaches have generally ignored them and its automation has not been properly faced yet. This paper presents AutoCRUD, a WebRatio plug-in that automates the generation of CRUD operations in OMG IFML (Interaction Flow modelling Language) standard. The suitability of this tool has been evaluated by its application into several real projects developed by a software company specialized in model-driven web application development. The results obtained present evidences of the significant productivity improvement obtained by the tool, which almost completely removes the developer time dedicated to CRUD operation implementation.

We analyze an approach to software development where object-oriented and compositional software specifications are written in separate languages and are only loosely connected. It supports compositional design of software in a domain-specific language and automatic model-driven construction of code from classes written in Java. We justify our approach by giving examples of development of large simulation programs and services on large models. We present also an example of using our method in general purpose software development this is bootstrapping the essential part of a software tool CoCoViLa, i.e. synthesizing CoCoViLa in CoCoViLa itself.

This paper proposes a framework used for real-world software development in the academic environment of Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU). The framework thus far has been used to establish the functional baseline for the Predictive Wastewater Management System (PWMS), a participatory sensing system for monitoring and predicting problems occurring in a municipality's wastewater system for the Eastech Corporation. As software development becomes globally distributed, students need immersion in a realistic software development lifecycle (SDLC) and experience with a framework targeted toward this emerging paradigm.

A qualitative study of domain specific languages for model driven security

In model-driven development, software system design is represented through models which are created using general purpose modeling languages e.g., UML. Later on system artifacts are automatically generated from these models. model-driven Security is a specialization of model-driven paradigm towards the domain of security, where security objectives are modeled along the system models and security infrastructures are directly generated from these models. Currently available general purpose modeling languages like UML do not have capability to model the security objectives along the system models. Over the past decade, many researchers are trying to address these limitations of the general purpose modeling languages and come up with several Domain Specific modeling Languages for model driven Security. In this study, a comparative study is presented regarding the security Domain Specific modeling Languages presented by the most prominent researchers for the development of secure system. A success criteria has been defined and these DSLs are critically analyzed based on it to obtain the qualitative results. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2014.
