Performance evaluation of material separation in a material recovery facility using a network flow model

In this paper, we model the recycling process for solid waste as performed in a material recovery facility. The intent is to inform the design and evaluation of a material recovery facility (MRF) in order to increase its profit, efficiency and recovery rate. We model the MRF as a multi-stage material separation process and develop a network flow model that evaluates the performance of the MRF through a system of linear equations. We estimate the parameters of the network flow model from historical data to find the best fit. We validate the model using a case-study of a light-packaging recovery section of an MRF in Spain. Additionally, we examine how uncertainty in the input material composition propagates through the system, and conduct a sensitivity analysis on the model parameters.

Real-time freeway traffic state estimation based on extended Kalman filter: a general approach

A general approach to the real-time estimation of the complete traffic state in freeway stretches is developed based on the extended Kalman filter. First, a general stochastic macroscopic traffic flow model of freeway stretches is presented, while some simple formulae are proposed to model real-time traffic measurements. Second, the macroscopic traffic flow model along with the measurement model is organized in a compact state-space form, based on which a traffic state estimator is designed by use of the extended-Kalman-filtering method. While constructing the traffic state estimator, special attention is paid to the handling of the boundary conditions and unknown parameters of the macroscopic traffic flow model. A number of simulations are conducted to test the designed traffic state estimator under various traffic situations in a freeway stretch with on/off-ramps and a long inter-detector distance. Some key issues are carefully investigated, including tracking capability of the traffic state estimator, comparison of various estimation schemes, evaluation of different detector configurations, significance of the on-line model parameter estimation, sensitivity of the traffic state estimator to the initial values of the estimated model parameters and to the related standard deviation values, and dynamic tracking of time-varying model parameters. The achieved simulation results are very promising for the subsequent development and testing work that is briefly outlined. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Retrieving relevant time-course experiments: a study on Arabidopsis microarrays

Understanding time-course regulation of genes in response to a stimulus is a major concern in current systems biology. The problem is usually approached by computational methods to model the gene behaviour or its networked interactions with the others by a set of latent parameters. The model parameters can be estimated through a meta-analysis of available data obtained from other relevant experiments. The key question here is how to find the relevant experiments which are potentially useful in analysing current data. In this study, the authors address this problem in the context of time-course gene expression experiments from an information retrieval perspective. To this end, they introduce a computational framework that takes a time-course experiment as a query and reports a list of relevant experiments retrieved from a given repository. These retrieved experiments can then be used to associate the environmental factors of query experiment with the findings previously reported. The model is tested using a set of time-course Arabidopsis microarrays. The experimental results show that relevant experiments can be successfully retrieved based on content similarity.

In this study, we aimed to describe a modern, efficient, and reproducible methodology to optimize respiration rate parameters coupled with transport properties in mass balances describing Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) systems. We considered mass balances for three different respiration rate j film (exponential, competitive and uncompetitive Michaelis-Menten kinetics) coupled with transport properties for two different packaging films. Experiments were conducted to validate the methodology using grapes placed in a polypropylene container opened on the top and sealed with packaging films. The methodology relies on a numerical optimization procedure called the Trust-Region-Reflective algorithm. We determined the predictive capability of models using goodness-of-fit criteria and assessed parameter uncertainty through standard errors. We also calculated the first-order optimality measure and the relative change in the sum of squares to verify the convergence of the implemented algorithm. Results showed that the respiration rate parameters obtained with this methodology for the exponential model provided a better fit than for the other two models. The fitting for the kinetic models is not very suitable since we found that the normalized standard errors were rather high. In conclusion, the methodology is robust, and we expect that it serves as a tool for assessing MAP technology design.

The augmented RIC model of the human respiratory system

This paper describes the augmented RIC model of respiratory impedance and analyzes its parameter values estimated-by a modified Newton method with least squares criterion-from impulse oscillometry data. The data were from asthmatic children, tested pre- and post-bronchodilator, and from healthy adults and a second group of adults with COPD. Our analyses show that the augmented RIC model was 13.7-66.6% more accurate than the extended RIC model at fitting these data, while its parameter estimates were within previously reported ranges, unlike the Mead1969, DuBois and Mead models, which typically yielded compliance estimates exceeding 200 l/kPa. Additionally, the augmented RIC model's C (p) parameter, representing peripheral airway compliance, is a statistically significant discriminator between unconstricted and constricted conditions (with p < 0.001) occurring in asthma and COPD. This corresponds well with current medical understanding, so the augmented RIC model is potentially useful for detection and treatment of airflow obstruction.

Elite genetic algorithms with adaptive mutations for solving continuous optimization problems - application to modeling of the optical constants of solids

The elite genetic algorithm with adaptive mutations is proposed as a tool for solving continuous optimization problems. The new algorithm and the corresponding classical genetic algorithm were severely tested on three families of multiminima test functions for 20, 50 and 100 variables. All performed tests proved that the introduced adaptive mutations significantly improve the ability of the algorithm to find a global minimum. After verifying the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the classical one on the test functions, an elite genetic algorithm with adaptive mutations was applied for solving the model parameter determination problem for modeling optical constants of the following metals: beryllium, chromium, nickel and palladium. Good agreement between calculated and experimental data was obtained for all four metals. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

X-band sea-clutter nonstationarity: Influence of long waves

In this paper, we deal with the problem of modeling the backscattering from sea surface for low-grazing-angle and high-resolution radar systems. Based on the electromagnetic two-scale model, we analyzed both the amplitude and frequency modulations induced on the small-scale Bragg resonant waves by the large-scale surface tilt and advection due to the swell presence. Evidence of sea-clutter nonstationarity has been verified and the relationship between the variations of clutter spectral features, such as texture, Doppler centroid, and bandwidth, have been studied by processing real sea-clutter data recorded by the IPIX radar of McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada. An autoregressive nonstationary process is proposed and validated to model the physical phenomenon.

Green houses play a vital role in modern agriculture. Artificial light illumination is very important in a green house. While light is necessary for plant growth, excessive light in a green house may not bring more profit and even damages plants. Developing a plant-physiology-based light control strategy in a green house is important, which implies that a state-space model on photosynthetic activities is very useful because modern control theories and techniques are usually developed according to model structures in the state space. In this work, a simplified model structure on photosystem II activities was developed with seven state variables and chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) as the observable variable. Experiments on ChlF were performed. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm was used to estimate model parameters from experimental data. The model structure can fit experimental data with a small relative error (<2%). ChlF under different light intensities were simulated to show the effect of light intensity on ChlF emission. A simplified model structure with fewer state variables and model parameters will be more robust to perturbations and model parameter estimation. The model structure is thus expected useful in future green-house light control strategy development.

Improved deterministic measurement model for consumer-grade accelerometers

Deterministic error modelling, calibration and model parameter estimation of consumer-grade accelerometers is considered and improvement to the traditionally used measurement model is proposed. Calibration experiments on a flight motion simulator are performed for experimental verification. model parameters are estimated using the Levenberg-Marquardt optimisation algorithm. Residual errors are considerably reduced as a result of the improved measurement model.

Quasi-maximum feasible subsystem for geometric computer vision problems

A robust fitting algorithm for geometric computer vision problems under the L-norm optimisation framework is presented. It is essentially based on the maximum feasible subsystem (MaxFS) but it overcomes the computational limitation of the MaxFS for large data by finding only a quasi-maximum feasible subset. Experimental results demonstrate that the algorithm removes outliers more effectively than the other parameter estimation methods recently developed when the outlier-to-inlier ratio in a data set is high.
