Magnetorheological damper's damping force model and the definition of its parameter

In the paper, the characteristics of magnetorheological demper's damping force and its common model are analyzed and an improved Bouc-Wen model of damping force is built. The law of the changing of the model parameters is studied and with experiment results the model parameters are defined. Some useful conclusions are obtained. The foundation of application of magnetorheological damper in the field of structure control is provided.

In a power system, it would be valuable to obtain reliable estimates of the electromechanical modes in real time. This requires that the system has been properly modeled. The model becomes inappropriate when there is a mismatch between the assumed model and the true system, e.g. when model parameters are not carefully chosen or when the power system experiences unexpected changes. Therefore, model validation is equally important for it can indicate the validity of the model, and thus, the modal estimation. To carry out model validation, this paper proposes a recursive whiteness testing method that exploits the statistical property of residuals. Compared to the conventional whiteness testing method, the new approach is better at tracking the model behavior in real time. Tests have been performed on simulation models under different conditions.

Heat pumps have recently received increasing interest due to green energy initiatives and increasing energy prices. In this paper, a nonlinear dynamic model of a single-effect LiBr-water absorption cycle heat pump is derived for simulation and control design purposes. The model is based on an actual heat pump located at a larger district heating plant. The model is implemented in modelica and is based on energy and mass balances, together with thermodynamic property functions for LiBr and water and staggered grid representations for heat exchangers. model parameters have been fitted to operational data and different scenarios are simulated to investigate the operational stability of the heat pump. Finally, this paper provides suggestions and examples of derivation of lower order linear models for control design.

The spatial uncertainties of tip positioning due to the nonlinearity of the PZT scanner and thermal drift hinder the further application of the AFM based nanomanipulation. This paper brings forward feature referenced tip localization enhanced by probability motion model to reduce the spatial uncertainties. An improved motion model is probabilistically built by incorporating the PI model, the creep model and the thermal drift model. For calibrating the accurate model parameters, the statistical experiments are designed and performed. Then the tip position is optimally estimated by combining with a local scan based feature sensing method. The simulation and corresponding experiments are performed to illustrate the validity and feasibility of the calibrated parameters and the algorithm.

Wearable technologies are becoming the main interface between human and surrounding environment for a variety of context-aware and autonomous applications. Ubiquitous, small-size, and low-cost smartphones carried by everyone nowadays are equipped with a host of embedded sensors that provide groundbreaking opportunities to collect and use multimodal data in data-driven decision support systems. Simulation models are one of the most widely used decision support tools in project management that can highly benefit from the integration of contextual knowledge with the model design. In this paper, a discrete event simulation (DES) model of construction operations involving human activities is designed, enriched with wearable sensor data using smartphones, and validated. The model parameters are defined using 1) a data-driven activity recognition and 2) a static engineering estimation method for comparison. Results show that the output of the data-driven simulation model is in a closer agreement with the values observed in the real system.

A radiated emission model, scaled, optimized, and compatible to modelling "on-chip" microwave devices is presented in this paper. The model has been inspired from a previously existing model at IRSEEM, which predicts only the radiated magnetic field. The proposed model predicts the radiated electromagnetic (EM) emissions of components of very small form factor. An optimization procedure has been implemented in order to extract the model parameters, taking into account their physical sense. The model is applied to an "on-chip" microstrip patch antenna, designed and simulated in Ansoft HFSS. The antenna is built on a High Resistivity Silicon substrate and resonates at 20 GHz. Promising and encouraging results have been obtained for the modelled radiated EM fields. Our model is proven suitable to apply on System-in-package and System-on-Chip devices integrating wireless system within itself.

In this paper, the electrical characteristics of a carbon enhanced valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) battery from East Penn Manufacturing are investigated and a dynamic model is developed for use in electrical simulations. The electrochemical processes that cause specific dynamic behaviors have been investigated. These processes are explained and a non-linear electric model, which captures the results of some of these electrochemical dynamics, is presented. The method to determine model parameters using experimental data is shown. To verify the battery model, both a pulsed current profile and an arbitrary current profile were applied to the battery and to the battery model and the voltage responses of the two were compared.

Memristive systems are nonlinear resistors with memory. Most of them are realized as resistive switching devices in nanotechnology. One example, with appropriate properties especially in neuromorphic applications, is the double barrier memristive device (DBMD). A continuous resistance range makes the DBMD suitable for replacing the synapses in neuromorphic circuits. Structural and functional descriptions based on physical in-sights can help to obtain a parametric concentrated model of the device for both reproducible investigations as well as emulations. Achieving physically meaningful values for model parameters in order to fit the measured data is not trivial. We propose a parameter identification method based on an optimization problem. Because of very fast and efficient algorithms, the wave digital method has been utilized in the objective function. As an example, a reduced model of the DBMD with optimized parameters for fitting the measured data is shown.

In this paper, we consider an online least square regression problem where the objective function is composed of a quadratic loss function and an L_1 regularization on model parameter. For each training sample, we propose to approximate the L_1 regularization by a convex function. This results in an overall convex approximation to the original objective function. We apply an efficient accelerated stochastic approximation algorithm to solve the approximation. The developed algorithm does not need to store previous samples, thus can reduce the space complexity. We further prove that the developed algorithm is guaranteed to converge to the global optimum with a convergence rate O(ln n/{the square root of}n) where n is the number of training samples. The proof is based on a weaker assumption than those applied in similar research work.

On March 12, 2020, the WHO declared the COVID-19 pandemic, in response to widespread infections and thousands of fatalities resulting from the outbreak. Researchers worldwide have paid close attention to this pandemic. This situation has been aided by mathematical models that guide public policy. In Rwanda, this problem involves uncertainty and incomplete information, and a stochastic approach is appropriate for capturing a broad range of possible outcomes. However, many epidemiological models do not account for preventive measures using a stochastic approach to analyze COVID-19 in Rwanda. Therefore, the aim of the paper is to build and analyze a COVID-19 pandemic stochastic model with preventive measures implemented in Rwanda. A deterministic model is formulated and transformed into stochastic equations. The numerical solutions of both models were computed and compared. The stochastic model is considered to be the best to use in the Rwanda context because of the model’s fluctuations, which capture even the residuals and uncertainties. The results indicate that the pandemic could spread faster if awareness-raising strategies are not effectively implemented, and preventive actions for the pandemic are considered crucial tools for effective control and mitigation.
