With the evolution of technology, and especially of the Internet, a growing interest has appeared for online education. The many advantages of e-Learning have made this teaching philosophy an ideal partner for teachers, either as a complement to regular education or as a substitute for traditional education. The development of an e-Learning system poses extra challenges for software developers, since there are other facets, such as contents and user tracking, not usually considered in software development methodologies. In this paper eLearniXML approach to the development of e-Learning systems is presented. This approach enriches the development of e-Learning systems method proposed in ADDIE with the model-based development of userinterfaces and software quality consideration. By doing so, we aim at the development of, what we have named, a model-based Instructional Development Environment (MB-ISDE), to include e-Learning development in the current trends of model-based software development. The paper investigates model-baseddesign (MBD) ideas for supporting end-user developers in creating mobile data collection tools. End-user developers cannot assumed to be able (or willing) to specify formal task models as they are common in MBD approaches. They use their knowledge about domain objects and general task characteristics to specify constraints on the execution of tasks. The paper shows that the restriction to specific task domains makes it possible to tailor the underlying meta-models and transfor-mation rules accordingly and to provide end-users with convenient tool support. In particular, dialog models and their stepwise enrichment and refinement are considered in the paper. General implications of the suggested ideas for MBD are discussed. The proposed approach is implemented using the Eclipse modeling Framework and a case study demonstrates the applicability of the approach.

The second workshop on HCI Engineering Education continued the effort of the IFIP Working Group 2.7/13.4 on user Interface Engineering by discussing the issues and identifying the opportunities in teaching and learning Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Engineering. The workshop attracted eight papers covering different teaching contexts, ranging from massive university courses, passing through different teaching experiences in specific academic curricula, and even teaching engineering concepts to children. In addition, the workshop received input for improving and adapting the repository material to the dynamic nature of this field. The discussion after the presentation of the contributions focused on how to model competencies, the support to interdisciplinary work, the overall course design, the recruitment of the students and the provision of educational resources, paving the way for further editions of the workshop.

This paper leverages the outcomes of the first workshop on HCI Engineering Education [4] to create an online repository where the community can share content relevant to HCI. The repository takes advantage of the functionalities of the Git file versioning system to support presenting and adding content. The paper describes the structure of the repository and the process for adding new content. In addition, we propose an adaptation of the framework for presenting teaching samples, supporting more flexibility in the application of educational material for different teaching objectives. The new presentation format starts with describing a design problem and emphasises the students' applied understanding of conceptual and theoretical knowledge. The presentation format is demonstrated and discussed by the example of an end-userdesign tool for mobile data collection.

Nowadays, while the number of users of interactive software steadily increase, new applications and systems appear and provide further complexity. An example of such systems is represented by multi-device applications, where the user can interact with the system through different platforms. However, providing end-users;with real capabilities to author userinterfaces is still a problematic issue, which is beyond the ability of most end-users today. In this paper, we present an approach intended to enable users to modify Web interfaces easily, considering implicit user intents inferred from example interface modifications carried out by the user. We discuss the design issues involved in the implementation of such all intelligent approach, also reporting on some experimental results obtained from a user test.

Emerging ubiquitous environments raise the need to support multiple interaction modalities in diverse types of devices. designing multimodal interfaces for ubiquitous environments using development tools creates challenges since target platforms support different resources and interfaces. model-based approaches have been recognized as useful for managing the increasing complexity consequent to the many available interaction platforms. However, they have usually focused on graphical and/or vocal modalities. This paper presents a solution for enabling the development of tilt-based hand gesture and graphical modalities for mobile devices in a multimodal user interface development tool. The challenges related to developing gesture-based applications for various types of devices involving mobile devices are discussed in detail. The possible solution presented is based. on a logical description language for hand-gesture userinterfaces. Such language allows us to obtain a user interface implementation on the target mobile platform. The solution is illustrated with an example application that can be accessed from both the desktop and mobile device supporting tilt-based gesture interaction.

This panel commemorates the 50th anniversary of the IFIP TC2 Working Conference on Command Languages (CCL) and the 30th anniversary of the workshop series on design Specification and Verification of Interactive Systems (DSV-IS), and uses that opportunity to position EICS within the HCI community. The discussion traces the origins of the EICS conference, from the union of seminal conferences to its current status and looks forward into its (possible) future. Reflecting on its contributions to the evolution of HCI methodologies, tools, and practices, the panel highlights the conference's role and impact on shaping the engineering of interactive systems.

The use of models has entered into current practice when developing various types of software product. However, there is a lack of methods able to use the information contained in relevant models concerning human-computer interaction for supporting the design and development of userinterfaces. In this paper, we propose a method for using information contained in formally represented task models in order to support the design of interactive applications, with particular attention to those applications where both usability and safety are the main concern. Examples taken from our experience in a case study from the domain of Air Traffic Control are introduced and further discussed to explain how the method can be applied.
