model-based system engineering of the Internet of Things: A Bibliometric Literature Analysis

model-based system engineering (MBSE) of the Internet of Things (IoT) literature is broad, and analysis of this literature enables the identification of themes and potential future study topics that will influence system development. This paper reports on bibliometric literature analysis of MBSE of IoT. It considers conference and journal publication trends in the state-of-the-art to identify emerging research themes from the standpoint of trans/multi-disciplinary scholarship and technology. We used Elsevier's Scopus database to find relevant publications from January 2018 to December 2022. Using publication citation ranking and other factors (e.g., publication venues), we selected 110 articles and then analyzed them using BibExcel and VOSviewer software tools. With a modest decline in 2021, this analysis shows an overall increase in publications during the time period. A thematic analysis of the abstracts revealed a strong focus on the introduction of reference architectures and integration of MBSE with business and management methodologies like Agile and BPMN 2.0. model-driven engineering and machine learning techniques are essential among the enablers for realization of complex heterogeneous IoT systems in the realm of Industry 4.0. We highlight these findings to better understand and meet the enduring challenge of scaling MBSE of IoT across diverse sectors like health, manufacturing, and transportation.

Nowadays, model-based and knowledge-based system engineering bring completely new demands also to the master degree teaching process and programs. Specifically, it is necessary to establish gluing technologies between individual master degree courses while full STEM education scope is covered. Since huge changes in educational system are often subject to complex, time demanding evaluation and approval process, there is usually significant delay between actual industrial needs and time when universities are able to deliver to the market engineers with required knowledge and curricula. Consequently, solutions which can be implemented in actual courses without huge investments of money and time is what educators should strive for. This paper shows how simple hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulators may help during the whole training period while respecting needs of already established courses dealing e.g. with modeling and simulation, control design, industrial IT and communication, control HW and electronics, sensors and actuators. The concept is demonstrated on several examples of already proven procedures in primary and second control courses. Copyright (C) 2020 The Authors.

The Puzzle-based Movable Rack (PBMR) system is a new type of warehouse storage system that enhance the performance of Puzzle-based storage (PBS) systems with a new compact configuration where unit loads can be moved using racks on autonomous wheels in multi-directions. Various storage and movement policies are employed to optimize system performance, enhancing both density and throughput. To implement the proposed storage solution, we consider the PMBR system from an engineering-to-order (ETO) perspective. In this study, we investigate the design process of the PBMR system considering it as an ETO product with the support of a model-based system engineering approach. Utilizing methods and tools from the system engineering discipline facilitates defining warehouse functions, systems, and the necessary resources for system implementation. This enables comprehensive documentation of all stages of warehouse design. Furthermore, these warehouse models can seamlessly integrate with various analyses and existing domain knowledge, thereby bolstering warehouse design decisions. Further, There are the necessary technical and theoretical foundations in place for reliable PBMR design, which also offer insights into howthe other ETO products and related system designs could be implemented.

MegaM@Rt2 project is a collaborative initiative of the ECSEL Joint Undertaking under Horizon 2020 EU programme. The project regroups 26 partners from 6 different European countries who jointly address challenges of engineering modern cyberphysical systems by using model-based engineering methods. Since it is a model-based project, we adopted a similar approach for dealing with requirements analysis, architecture, design, roadmap planning and development status checking. In these tasks, document generation methods were particularly useful to create a set of "live" reference specifications and contractual reports. We believe that these methods perfectly demonstrate relevant benefits of the model-based approach and are applicable to many other contexts. Document generation has several challenges, since the produced documents should address several goals and target different audience. Hence, we describe this approach in detail in this paper in the form of an experience report. In essence, the MegaM@Rt2 project had a rather trivial task to document inception phase of the project. The challenge arises from the scale of the project, we had to deal with hundreds of requirements from completely different users, hundreds of features of 29 tools, which had to be mapped to those requirements in order to analyze a gap and devise a roadmap for a consistent tool chain. With limited resource on technical coordination we had to be extremely efficient and thus we adopted a model-based approach that we describe in this paper. The paper should be helpful to project managers and architects who wish to discuss on model-based approaches from a practical side.

Integrating model-based system engineering with set-based concurrent engineering principles for reliability and manufacturability analysis of mechatronic products

The point-based approach consists of committing a set of requirements and a single design solution from the design space. This approach is time-consuming and often leads to deadline excess when developing a new complex system such as mechatronic systems. In fact, this approach could generate iterative loops between engineers in the downstream design stage to evaluate the manufacturability and the quality of the developed system. To overcome this issue, introducing a model-based system engineering (MBSE) approach in the upstream design stage hinged on set-based concurrent engineering (SBCE) principles is a good solution to diminish the exchange loops between engineers and to enhance efficiency in the design process. This approach consists in evaluating a large set of system solutions, then gradually narrowing these solutions until converging to a limited set of optimized solutions. In this article, a novel approach entitled model based for reliability and manufacturability analysis (MBRMA) and based on model-based system engineering and set-based concurrent engineering in the preliminary design phases is used to filter out weak or costly solutions over time and to assess system engineer when adopting trade-off analysis. First, customer requirements, functional and structural aspect of the system are defined using SysML diagrams. Next, the application of the algorithm allows narrowing the design space, and finally, a trade-off analysis is carried out to select the best system architecture. The first contribution of this article is the creation of novel stereotypes of composition and allocation flows in a profile diagram between functions and alternative solutions. The second contribution is the implementation of an algorithm to analyze system robustness and to converge on the final set of optimized solutions. Designing the database for a reliability aware model-based system engineering process

This article outlines the need for a reliability database to implement model-based description of components failure modes and dysfunctional behaviors. We detail the requirements such a database should honor and describe our own solution: the Dysfunctional Behavior Database (DBD). Through the description of its meta-model, the benefits of integrating the DBD in the system design process is highlighted. The main advantages depicted are the possibility to manage feedback knowledge at various granularity and semantic levels and to ease drastically the interactions between system engineering activities and reliability studies. The compliance of the DBD with other reliability database such as FIDES is presented and illustrated. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

model-based system engineering (MBSE) is becoming an industrial standard to design embedded systems. Therefore, its integration in electrical and computer engineering education is critical. This article presents an undergraduate course on MBSE for embedded systems through the formulation of course learning outcomes, identification of the course contents, and the construction of a holistic view for the contents. The holistic view of the course binds the contents by providing the modeling methodology, the transformation engine, and the simulation environment of an end-to-end framework. Furthermore, students obtain integrated design experience, through problem-based learning, using three case studies. Assessment through quantitative evaluation and students' feedback show the viability of the presented course.

The integrated defense acquisition, technology, and logistics (IDAT&L) life cycle management system (LCMS) is currently a document-centric process, i.e., the IDAT&L LCMS process is a document-based approach where engineering strategies, plans, and design documents are manually generated, maintained, and sustained. This approach causes unnecessary time spent on correlating and managing interrelated system documentation. In addition, a change to the system could easily be miscommunicated or not relayed to another engineering group, e.g., test and evaluation. Hence the program experiences delay in the schedule and additional cost occurs due to test plan and execution rework as a result of test criteria not met. This paper addresses benefits of applying a model-based system engineering approach to the IDAT&L LCMS process and how it promotes a cross-engineering collaborative environment.

A model-based system engineering Approach for the Virtual Prototyping of an Electric Vehicle of Class L7

This study is aimed at creating an accurate mathematical model concerning an electric vehicle of class L7. This category includes quadricycles having a mass less than 400 kg, batteries excluded, and power below 15 kW. To this end, an electromechanical model with three degrees of freedom is developed in the Matlab-Simulink virtual environment employing the Simscape library. In the mechanical model developed in this investigation, the main degrees of freedom considered are the forward advancement, the vertical displacement, and the angular pitch. Furthermore, two additional degrees of freedom are also included in the dynamical model in order to take into account the suspension displacements as well as the dynamic effects induced by the stiffness and damping characteristics of the tires. The behavior of the contact force generated by the interaction of the tires with the road profile is described by using the Pacejka Magic Formula. On the other hand, the propulsion unit is modeled considering three different configurations: the first scheme is composed of a central electric engine having a fixed gearbox and a mechanical differential;the second design solution is similar to the previous one but is equipped with a two-speed gearbox;finally, the third configuration consists of two separate electric engines. In all the design configurations mentioned before, the vehicle can be controlled by providing the driver inputs, by controlling the cruising speed, or by ensuring that the vehicle follows a specific driving cycle. By means of a comparative analysis performed between the three different design configurations, the proposed virtual model allows for identifying which design solution is the most appropriate, thereby reducing the time required in the design phases and also simplifying the entire process development.
