In safety-critical systems, the repercussions of system failures can be dire, encompassing significant losses in terms of human lives, property damage, and environmental impact. As systems grow in complexity, the burden of conducting safety analyses escalates as well. To streamline the system development process and alleviate this workload, automated safety analysis methods are indispensable. In this paper, we introduce an innovative automated safety analysis technique that hinges on the iterative utilisation of Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) - termed the FMEA and FTA iterative analysis (FMEA-FTAia). Central to FMEA-FTAia is the integration of the system model with the system failure model, establishing a cohesive linkage to the fault tree model for unified change management. While FMEA delves into an exhaustive examination of component failure modes, FTA pinpoints vulnerabilities within the system. By integrating FMEA and FTA, a comprehensive safety analysis framework is formed. Additionally, in this article we propose a novel fault tree generation methodology. Furthermore, we discuss a model-based tool - FMEA-FTAia tool - designed to support the implementation of FMEA-FTAia and facilitate efficient safety analysis processes. And we designed the Analysis Architecture Metamodel (SAAM) to support FMEA-FTAia tool.

In system engineering, it is a common practice to start exploring the solution space through usage of design mechanisms such as SysML, a modeling language for expressing system design. The usage of such methodologies allow creating design of target solutions through identification of use cases, components, their interfaces, interaction data models and so on. Since it is a generic language, the concepts in SysML require manual mapping to the concepts in the problem domain so that the target design could be expressed in domain terms. This makes its usage effort-intensive since the process of binding with problem domain is highly dependent on domain experts and their understanding. SysML mitigates this by allowing itself to be extended as reusable profiles incorporating problem domain concepts and patterns. However, the process to support this activity isn't well defined. To solve the process of creating design solutions specific to a domain, we propose an approach which includes defining a design environment that is domain aware. It has been referred to as a Domain Specific engineering Environment (DSEE). DSEE supports the design creation process more holistically by providing support for the various systems engineering life cycle phases other than designing. The developed DSEE is based on the model Driven engineering (MDE) paradigm which enables it to be integrated and viewed in SysML terminology. The environment has support for a Domain Specific modeling Language (DSML) along with suitable graphical representations corresponding to SysML standards, making it easy for SysML users to design systems. DSEE is created as a plug-in in Eclipse platform. This paper discusses about the DSEE.

This paper represents the latest instantiation of a series of evolving work attempting to improve the methods and techniques used for designing and supporting the acquisition of complex military systems, with an immediate application to naval surface combatants. Ship design provides an ideal proof-of-concept as traditional methods may have been restrictively anchored by designing ships within intrinsic ship systems capabilities as opposed to designing ships as an element of a SoS. The postulation is that modern naval ship design should consider the systems of interest as components subsumed by a holistic environment encompassing assets and capabilities inorganic to a naval platform. This position paper propose a starting point approach intended to provide a more defined means of establishing and improving the ship design process as part of a multi-layered maritime domain warfare enterprise. The paper will first explore the applications of SoS theories in the naval context and offer foundational definitions to better explain what is meant by capability-based framework. The proposed methodology provides a structured and cohesive approach for identifying and assessing ship capability portfolio with traceable and better known impacts on mission effectiveness, affordability and risk, in the early stages of ship design within the scope of a naval system-of-systems.

The development of an aircraft industrial system is a complex process which faces the challenge of digital discontinuity in multidisciplinary engineering due to various interfaces between different digital tools, leading to extra development time and costs. This paper proposes an ontology-based system, aiming at functionality integration and design process automation, by models for Manufacturing methodology principles. A tool-agnostic modelling, simulation and validation platform with Discrete Event Simulation and 3D simulation is enabled and demonstrated in a real case study. An ontology layer collecting the domain knowledge enables integration of the proposed system, accelerating the design process and enhancing design quality. To cope with current inconsistencies and incompleteness of technical documents, we propose a combined, model-based structured graphical and textual meta-standard approach for specification, verification and validation of complex systems in general and ISO enterprise standards in particular. This methodology, developed under the auspices of the ISO TC 184/SC 5 OPM Study Group, is presented along with MBASE-model-based Authoring of Specifications Environment, which is designed to support authors of technical specifications while creating and editing model-based technical documents.

Security pattern-based system and software engineering (PBSE) approaches aim at building secure software and systems by capturing and reusing artifacts that encapsulate security expert's knowledge called security patterns. In this context, security patterns are selected by developers based on security requirements. On the other hand, security risk management is an iterative approach that consists of: (1) a risk assessment activity for identifying, analyzing and evaluating security risks and (2) a risk treatment activity to mitigate these risks which result in issuing security requirements. Hence, risk management and security PBSE can be used together. In this context, this paper aims at guiding the selection of security patterns in security PBSE based on security risk management results and pattern classification. For illustration purposes, we consider an example of a SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) system.

Psychological and ethical criteria are to date not systematically covered in the system design process. We suggest to extend existing model-based system engineering approaches by new elements that are capable to capture these criteria and, in particular, allow for an implementation of psychological risk analysis and ethical evaluation of work systems already in the design phase. The need for a systematic integration of not only safety but also ethical and psychological criteria in the system design is strengthened by the growing complexity of work systems and the increasing use of artificial intelligence-based algorithms, which have the potential to replace distinctive human capabilities and are associated with a shift of responsibility from humans to machines. We identify essentially two factors impeding the development of an innovative integrative system design approach. First, at present, there is no legally predefined iterative process including an open feedback loop between the operator and the system designer that enables continuous risk assessment. Second, available methods do not provide a framework to integrate ethical and psychological criteria. We propose four steps for the development of an integrative system design approach: (1) an in-depth investigation of current methods suitable for holistic system design processes, (2) the development of a transdisciplinary terminology, (3) the development of a procedure which allows to identify ethical criteria meeting both individual and societal requirements and (4) testing of the developed approach in a digital system model by using a suitable use case.

model-based Test engineering (MBTE) is an approach to how test can deliver new, unique, and increased value to organizations and programs in the Digital engineering landscape. Using standards such as SysML[1] and ATML[2], a common language (style guide) and set of workflows are being defined that bridge the worlds of model-based system engineering, Design engineering, and Test. There are many challenges that exist today that increase the costs and schedules of programs. These include requirements sufficiency, tracking requirements across the program life cycle, knowledge capture, lack of "authoritative sources of truth (ASOT)," TPS development and maintenance, and ATE maintenance and obsolescence. This paper provides an overview of MBTE, what needs to be described in the SysML domain and how that enables high value such as keeping the SysML models as the ASOT for test and automating the downstream ATE workflows such as TPS generation. MBTE enables systems engineering, Design engineering, and Test to have a common language to achieve greater understanding and agreement as to what needs to be tested and improve decision making. With so much investment being put into models, extracting the most value out of those models is imperative. MBTE is an approach that is being built to extract that value across the program life cycle.

This paper presents the development of a Virtual Simulation Environment (VSE) and a Digital Twin (DT) of an autonomously driving truck for a distribution center. While autonomous driving on public roads still faces various technical and legal challenges, within a distribution center, which is a confined area, some of these restrictions do not apply. Therefore, distribution centers can be the first environment where the autonomous driving of trucks is possible. A distribution center is a closed environment with no, or minimal generic traffic, where the trucks have relatively low speeds, short stopping distance and layout precisely known. Dedicated sensors locate the trucks. This paper addresses the mentioned aspects of driving in the distribution centers describing the necessary steps taken for the design, implementation, and testing of a VSE for a distribution center, and a DT of an autonomously driving truck. The development of the VSE is based on the integration of a SysML modeling tool - IBM Rhapsody, MATLAB Simulink, and Unity Game Engine using a model-based system engineering approach. The paper also presents the test and the validation of a driving scenario used in a distribution center, using the TruckLab setup of the Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands. The VSE and the DT showed considerable potential as testing and validation tools for automotive engineers, making it possible to define driving test scenarios for different types of tractor and trailer combinations.

Within the framework of model-based system engineering (MBSE), models are developed to support system requirements, design, analysis, and test activities from design through sustainment to end-of-life. Traditional methods do not effectively integrate reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) analyses into the model architecture, leading to a disconnect between design, systems and reliability engineering efforts. The solution demonstrated in this study facilitates RAM performance predictions against mission needs for a Navy frigate, consisting of several critical systems responsible for a wide range of missions. By linking RAM data with the platform's architectural design in an MBSE environment, engineers were able to analyze platform and mission RAM predicted performance against requirements. This study demonstrated that Cameo system modeler provides an adequate analysis tool suite and the capabilities to enable a comprehensive RAM analysis. The resulting data provided stakeholders with insight into the systems, or subsystems, that were negatively impacting the platform's RAM performance and the ability to proactively mitigate these concerns. Ultimately, the consolidation of systems and reliability engineering into one integrated digital environment improved understanding and collaboration across the various engineering facets, while providing a data-driven assessment of the overall platform's mission effectiveness.
