The NASA Exoplanet Archive is an online service that serves data and information on exoplanets and their host stars to help astronomical research related to search for and characterization of extra-solar planetary systems. In order to provide the most up to date data sets to the users, the exoplanet archive performs weekly updates that include additions into the database and updates to the services as needed. These weekly updates are complex due to interfaces within the archive. I will be presenting a SysML model that helps us perform these update activities in a weekly basis.

This paper provides an overview of Aerospace R&D work on digital engineering consistent with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Digital engineering Strategy encouraging innovation in rapid development of space systems. An objective of this investigation was to identify challenges associated with DE and to formulate an approach to mitigate the challenges. One key challenge within a larger enterprise is the fact that models will be developed by different developers/modelers, using different ontologies, different tools, and different levels of detail. Our approach introduced innovative techniques for connecting disparate DE models, defining/controlling system interfaces and defining/managing interface baseline specifications within a DE construct. The approach includes a proposed flexible, robust, and agile platform and associated implementation framework of processes, tools, digital models, digital threads and digital use cases. The approach is being submitted for U.S. patent application and was applied on a pilot project involving a spacecraft Bus, mission payload (P/L), and digitized PL-to-Bus interface.

A Toolchain for Synthesizing and Validating Safety Architectures

Autonomous vehicles handle complicated tasks that may lead to harm when performed incorrectly. These harms, in particular when caused by system faults, may be avoided by the deployment of safety architectural patterns, such as the Heterogeneous Duplex pattern. Our goal is to provide safety engineers with computer-aided support for synthesizing architectures with safety architecture patterns. To this end, we build on our previous work in which we proposed a model-based system engineering plugin to enable the model-driven approach using safety architecture patterns. This article proposes a toolchain for synthesizing the structure and switching logic of safety architectures, as well as for validating them through simulation-based fault-injection. We validate our toolchain using an industrial use-case for autonomous driving systems, namely, a Highway Pilot system. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Cyber-Physical systems (CPSs) are natural evolutions of embedded systems consisting of embedded computing devices and networks interacting with physical processes and possibly with a human. By introduction of Internet of Things (IoT), and Industry 4.0, CPSs are used in an interconnected way each of which may belong to a different stakeholder, building a complex system of systems (SoS) called CPSoS. These systems need to employ some techniques to transform the collected data to knowledge with which the system can make better decisions. These capabilities can create smart CPSoS or sCPSoS. However, these systems are highly complex from both structural and behavioural point of views. Naturally, there is a need for multiple abstraction levels using different paradigms to model these system, called Multi-Paradigm modeling (MPM). In this paper, the challenges and opportunities of using agent technologies, including intelligent agents, Agent-based modeling and Simulation (ABM), and Multi-Agent systems (MAS) (or Agentoriented Software engineering (AOSE)) in an integrated way with model-based system engineering (MBSE) techniques are discussed to cover the whole lifecycle of sCPSoS, from simulation and analysis, to development, operation and monitoring.

In order to deal with the increasing complexity of nowadays systems, model-based system engineering (MBSE) promotes the use of models all along the engineering phases. In this scenario, systems are often represented by a set of models, conforming to different modeling languages and built with different tools. This multiplicity and heterogeneity are challenging when models evolve as they may easily become inconsistent. This is even more crucial when we deal with security requirements. Indeed, being a critical property of systems, security has been integrated in MBSE so that it can be dealt with since the early phases of the project (in what is called "security-by-design"). Consequently, it needs to be taken into account as well when the system evolves in order to avoid potential security issues. In order to tackle this problem, we propose here to leverage on the model federation paradigm, which promotes the reification of the dependencies between heterogeneous models. Concretely, we propose the creation of a security model federation. In this federation, security related dependencies between the models representing a system are reified and equipped with security rules that can be (re)evaluated upon evolution scenarios in order to determine whether a given change impacts security. We provide an initial methodology for building such a federation and demonstrate the feasibility of the approach with a prototype implementation.

In this article, we discuss rational and trends of model-based Safety Assessment of complex systems. We start by explaining why classical modeling methodologies are not sufficient to tackle today's industrial challenges. Then, we sketch the main features of AltaRica 3.0, a high level modeling language which aims at overcoming these difficulties. Finally, we suggest some ideas to better integrate safety engineering with other system engineering disciplines.

Electric machines are a critical component for the power system architecture of modern and future aircraft. Consequently, it is necessary that the representative machine models accurately capture the dynamic response of these machines for a variety of operating conditions and system configurations. In this paper, a population of fielded electric machines at various stages in their life cycles are tested. The observed responses of the machine are parameterized and compared using statistical methods.

To conceive a CPS is a complex and multidisciplinary endeavour involving different stakeholders, potentially using a plethora of different languages to describe their views of the system at different levels of abstraction. model-Driven engineering comes, precisely, as a methodological approach to tackle the complexity of systems development with models as first-class citizens in the development process. The measure of realism of these models with respect to the real (sub)system is called fidelity. Usually, different models with different fidelity are then developed during the development process. Additionally, it is very common that the development process of CPS includes an incremental (and collaborative) use of simulations to study the behaviour emerging from the heterogeneous models of the system. Currently, the different models, with different fidelity, are managed in an ad hoc manner. Consequently, when a (Co)simulation is used to study a specific property of the system, the choice of the different models and their setup is made manually in a non-tractable way. In this paper we propose a structured new vision to CPS development, where the notion of simulation goal and multi-fidelity simulation unit are first-class citizens. The goal is to make a clear link between the system requirements, the system properties, the simulation goal and the multi-fidelity simulation unit. The outcome of this framework is a way to automatically determine the model at an adequate fidelity level suitable for answering a specific simulation goal.

model checking methods have been proven to be a valuable asset for identifying undesired behaviour of safety-critical Instrumentation and Control (I&C) logics. Their application in the nuclear domain has been very successful and has triggered significant interest from the safety community. Creating formal models from the diagrams found on paper or from digital formats without the needed semantics is one bottleneck that hinders the adoption of model checking due to costs in time and may introduce errors. This paper proposes a methodology for the creation of formal models from I&C diagrams drawn in generic modelling tools (lacking specific I&C semantics). The generic I&C logic diagram is transformed into an intermediate UML model that in turn can be transformed to other target formats like IEC 61131 PLCopen XML I&C software or NuSMV formal model code. This methodology is demonstrated with a typical example of a trip signal generator application logic. This application logic is drawn in MS Visio, it is transformed to an I&C model in UML with the needed properties for model checking, then to IEC 61131 PLCopen XML and to an input file for the NuSMV model checker.

Enterprise systems' interoperability has been identified as a significant issue faced by enterprises, which need to collaborate with other companies and participate within Networked Enterprises. To achieve a higher quality of interoperability and ensure an effective collaboration, a certain number of Interoperability Requirements (IRs) should be satisfied. Thus, interoperability should be verified and continuously improved. A manner for verifying the enterprise systems' interoperability is through the Interoperability Assessment (INAS). However, in general, the notion of "requirement" is implicit and presented as Interoperability Evaluation Criterion (IEC) in the INAS approaches. It also has been identified that the IEC interdependencies are not explicitly defined. Indeed, their interdependencies should be considered as they can support the identification of impacts on the overall system. Further, the majority of the INAS approaches are manual-conducted, which is a laborious and time-consuming process and in many times depends on the "subjective" knowledge of experts, which can be expensive in time and money when hiring external consultants. In this context, this research proposes a Knowledge-based Interoperability Assessment system (KBIAS) for supporting decision-making within Networked Enterprises. A Design Science Research (DSR) methodology has been adopted for conducting the work. First, A Requirement engineering (RE) approach has been adapted to elicit and define relevant IRs, which are father related with system's components. Such IRs are used as IEC during the INAS process. To formally conceptualise the knowledge about the INAS (subsuming the set of IRs, interoperability problems and solutions), we proposed the Ontology of Interoperability Assessment (OIA). A model-based system engineering approach has been applied for defining and organising the concepts of the proposed ontology.
