Bacterial chemotaxis control process analysis with SysML

This paper looks at the bacteria chemotaxis control process utilizing the System modeling Language (SysML) to leverage well-defined and proven engineering tools for architecting, analyzing, and refining complex systems. It proposes a new methodology called reverse-engineering object-oriented systems engineering method (RE-OOSEM) that converts descriptive biology research information into descriptive systems engineering information. It utilizes SysML and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) to capture system architecture from biological system knowledge and inputs them into systems engineering tools. From an engineering point of view, this allows greater insight into how biological systems operate and suggests how much model detail is required to uncover a top-down system understanding. RE-OOSEM methodology guides the SysML chemotaxis control capture process. SysML syntax is used instead of biological syntax to facilitate biological chemotaxis control system analysis from an engineered system point of view. The model can act as a scaffolding to help uncover system function, the relationships of system components and processes, and bioinformatic phenotype and genotype correlation. An executable MathWorks Stateflow chemotaxis control process model based on the SysML architectural model is included. The results show the following engineering perspective observations. (1) Several control components are not dedicated but are available and utilized when needed. (2) Individual chemoreceptors act together as a sensor array. (3) Phosphate groups act as a signaling mechanism. (4) Methylation via CH3 groups of the chemoreceptor results in sensitivity adaptation. (5) Closed-loop control collaboratively utilizes ligand bonding, phosphorylation, and methylation. (6) Timing relationships of the control subprocesses give insight into the system's architecture.

This paper underlines the crucial role of transdisciplinary approaches in overcoming complex educational challenges to accelerate learning and meet semiconductor industry workforce needs by combining neurosciences, psychology, education, and engineering. It examines the brain's learning processes, focusing on sensory and neuroendocrine pathways, and adopts a neuroscience approach from a Control systems perspective to enhance personalized learning. Using an unconventional analogy between human learning and industrial processes, the study introduces the Psychophysiological-based Hypermedia Adaptive Automation System (PHAS) model. Employing model-based systems engineering (MBSE) with systems modeling Language (SysML), it develops the engineering Learning Analytic System ( ELAS) framework, featuring a rigorous Verification and Validation (VV) process to align stakeholder needs with system capabilities. ELAS simulations offer predictive insights into soft skill development, facilitating targeted educational interventions. The study aims to develop comprehensive engineers with critical thinking, creativity, problem- solving, communication, and teamwork skills, aligning with initiatives such as the Chips for America by integrating Multidimensional Teaching/Learning Methods to create more effective, inclusive, and holistic educational systems.

Hierarchical Planning Applied to the Preliminary Design of CubeSats: Nanospace Study

CubeSat design has been already studied and formalized but knowledge representation remains a challenge. The management of human-learnt knowledge during the process is not an aspect that is often spoken about. This paper discusses the proposal of integrating a hierarchical planning approach with a model-based one to the open-source Nanospace framework, a web-based application for concurrent engineering during the preliminary design phase of CubeSats. Hierarchical planning aids to introduce commonly tacit human expertise, an aspect that the preliminary design of CubeSats can benefit from. The proposed integration could allow a faster design convergence and faster inspection of candidate architectures The Nanospace framework itself may benefit from an approach bringing in model-based efforts and hierarchical planning facilitate knowledge representation and reuse. A use case on the CREME CubeSat project is detailed, emphasizing how to impregnate the design iterations with experts' knowledge.

This study introduces an automated test bench designed to optimize flocculation-thickening processes in the wastewater treatment industry. Addressing current challenges in operational efficiency and cost reduction, the test bench employs model-based systems engineering (MBSE) principles, leveraging SysML modeling within the CESAM framework. By integrating advanced technologies, including PLC programming and a closed-loop control system, this bench provides precise and efficient testing under varying operational conditions. Economic implications are explored, demonstrating the cost-effectiveness of optimized flocculation processes, which reduce chemical use and operational expenditures while enhancing water clarity and sludge management. The system's 3D modeling enables detailed simulations, aiding in both research and pedagogical applications. This platform highlights the potential of MBSE in creating scalable, robust solutions that contribute to sustainable water management.

Automatic generation of system model diagrams driven by multi-source heterogeneous data

The demand for functionality, performance, safety, and reliability in complex product domains is continuously increasing, leading to growing product complexity. Traditional document-based systems engineering approaches face numerous challenges in terms of communication efficiency, traceability, and maintenance when dealing with complex product system design. Consequently, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has been widely adopted. To improve the efficiency of system modelling, an effective method is needed to automate the process by reusing existing design resources. This study proposes a knowledge graph-based approach for the automatic generation of system model diagrams, consisting of three main ***, a system model graph is constructed using an existing system model repository. Then, the required modelling elements are extracted from design documents, and reusable model elements are obtained based on the system model graph. Lastly, a mapping relationship is established between system model elements extracted from multi-source heterogeneous data and SysML metamodel, enabling the automatic generation of system model diagrams based on SysML views. This approach effectively leverages the information from the existing system model repository and achieves automated mapping conversion from multi-source heterogeneous data to the SysML system model. A communication satellite case study is presented to demonstrate the capability of this method.

A comparative experiment between textual requirements and model-based requirements on proxies for contractual safety

Requirements form the backbone of contracting in acquisition programs. Requirements define the problem boundaries within which contractors try to find acceptable solutions (design systems). At the same time, requirements are the criteria by which a customer measures the extent that their contract has been fulfilled by the supplier. In this context, the quality of a requirement set is determined by the level of contractual safety that it yields. Unfortunately, textual requirements do not provide acceptable levels of contractual safety, as they remain a major source of problems in acquisition programs. model-based requirements have been proposed as an alternative to textual requirements, although this promise has not been demonstrated yet. This paper addresses the main question of whether using model-based requirements improves the contractual safety of acquisition programs compared to using textual requirements. The level of adequate applicability, bounding, necessity, and completeness achieved by model-based requirements are empirically measured using an experimental study with aerospace engineering and industrial and systems engineering students on a space system application. The results show that model-based requirements outperform textual requirements in these four variables.

Due to a lack of resources,rural communities often face challenges when planning catastrophic *** project involved applying systems thinking and model-based systems engineering to develop a proof-of-concept,multi-method computer simulation and then determining whether the simulation could be used to assess the efficacy of disaster planning approaches on health outcomes in rural communities,as a function of primary *** project focus was a rural or non-urban healthcare system experiencing a natural *** system dynamics and discrete event models were incorporated to represent subsystem operations,crucial disaster responses,as well as three key response systems:public health,emergency management,and *** subsystem models included several components:policies/procedures,communications,resources,exercises/drills/training,healthcare space and staff,and the flow of affected people into and through the *** combined simulation can serve as a first step to a more comprehensive approach to helping rural communities achieve more efficient and effective healthcare planning for disaster responses.

As an emerging technology, digital twin (DT) studies are gaining momentum in both academia and industry. Specifically, the aerospace industry can benefit significantly from the implementation of DT technology since its products and processes are complex, technically challenging, and costly. DTs enable a comprehensive technology integration capacity and holistic approach in the product life cycle. However, for simplification, implementations of DT to processes in the aerospace industry are often handled independently without integration with other related processes. In this study, we propose a methodological framework to integrate different processes throughout the essential parts of aircraft's life cycle. In pursuit of creating a DT of the system for managing the life cycle of aircraft, all aspects and processes have been thoroughly examined. Ten main components for the management of DTs are identified. Statistical and stochastic approaches for enhancing the analytical capabilities of DTs are discussed. Within the scope of Product Life Cycle Management and from the perspective of systems engineering, we advocate creating the DT of an aircraft by combining the DTs for each component through a digital thread.

In recent years, engineering intelligent systems has become closely related to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) components into systems. There is a general sense that as the availability of computational resources scales, the intelligence of AI and ML components will scale, thus scaling the intelligence of the system as a whole. While this bottom-up approach has merit, it takes the task of engineering intelligence out of the hands of systems engineers and gives it to AI and ML engineers. In this paper, an alternative approach to engineering intelligence is outlined based on combining the concepts of automated theorem proving (ATP) and digital engineering. Instead of using AI and ML at the component-level, ATP can be applied at the systems-level to digital models and environments. By systematically solving proofs related to properties, functional requirements, and performance, ATP can contribute to the design, operation, and regulation of intelligent systems. This paper substantiates the use of ATP in digital engineering by using model-based systems engineering as an interface between the two. This paper illustrates this interface with a descriptive example in unmanned aerial systems. Ultimately, the use of ATP with digital engineering provides a top-down, systems-centric alternative to using AI and ML components as the primary means of engineering intelligence.

Technology roadmapping is an important yet challenging strategic process involving inter-disciplinary knowledge and requiring key decision-makers participation. To improve and facilitate this activity, a concept of model-based technology roadmapping has been proposed in the literature as an application of model-based systems engineering practices to the strategic planning domain. At the same time, many modern complex technical systems are required to be not only functional, efficient, and reliable, but also useful, usable, and desirable, which shifts the focus of planning to the user experience (UX). In this paper, we developed a Domain-specific language that uniformly represents key concepts related to the four levels essential for strategic planning in the user-oriented business context: market, UX design, engineering design, and technology. A collaborative interactive software was developed to support the proposed methodology. As a case study, a sustainable transformation of the automotive sector was tested and implemented in the software.
