Traffic crashes have been an epidemic in modern life, sometimes with tragic consequences. Traffic safety initiatives have included the use of vehicle event data recorders (EDRs) to help investigators understand what happened before and during a crash event. This paper presents a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach aimed at augmenting the digital forensics associated with EDRs in traffic crash investigations. The goal of the modeling effort is to develop system and subsystem requirements to address the needs of the crash investigator and the courts, each as stakeholders. The MBSE approach utilized the MagicGrid V2 method to work through the problem definition with the four pillars of MBSE: requirements, structure, behavior, and parametrics. The modeling effort shows some functionality is driven by compliance with existing and upcoming regulations. Also, data attributed to the identity of the driver may be present, which means privacy concerns exist. Analysis of these requirements reveals potential conflict, which means EDR designers may have to pick one requirement or another to satisfy. The modeling effort also raises the need for privacy and security controls with a compartmentalized architecture to balance the needs for the availability of forensic data with the need to protect user information and manufacturer intellectual property. The application of the MagicGrid modeling methodology sets up the detailed design efforts for a future event data recorder. Forensic models were created for use in developing forensic systems requirements. These models follow the approach an investigator would follow in obtaining data from a crash event, while also highlighting what data is available versus what data could be considered as personally identifiable information (PII) which could be a privacy concern.

With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support the work of numerous disciplines, we describe a preliminary investigation into the benefits and drawbacks of large language model (LLM) use as part of a traditional systems engineering and design workflow. To explore this, we tasked a group of systems engineers to each create a list of requirements and use case diagram to satisfy a systems of systems user scenario presented in a proposal document. Participants created models of a healthcare setting in which clinicians resolved discrepancies with patient care by consulting additional sources of record, demonstrating the importance of integrating new systems within the larger healthcare system of systems. The first group were provided open access to an LLM, the second group were provided draft materials generated by an LLM, and the third followed their normal workflow. A subject matter expert (SME) evaluator then scored each model according to its completeness, consistency, correctness, simplicity, and traceability. Through this, we show that although LLMs are not a replacement for a trained systems engineer, they can contribute in two primary ways to the modeling process: first, they can generate a significant portion of the information necessary to create a minimum viable product (MVP) model within a fraction of the time, offering a promising way to accelerate the overall model development process. Second, they can answer detailed, domain-specific questions and reduce the time spent on external research.

Gas turbine systems operate in high temperature and high pressure conditions, which easily lead to performance degradation or various serious failures. The reliability is one of the most important attributes to monitor the gas turbine safety. Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) is a well-known approach to systematically analyze the gas turbine reliability. However, traditional document-centric implementation of FMECA requires manual recording of fault related information. Such implementation approach is prone to human error and tedious. As an evolving approach, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has been applied in many industries to support system design, analysis and management. In this study, an automatic FMECA analysis approach for gas turbine systems is proposed based on MBSE. The FMECA architecture model is established according to the SysML diagrams of internal block diagram and block definition diagram. The topology between FMECA related concepts is characterized through the constructed architecture model. Then, the Design Structure Matrices is used to realize the risk analysis automatically. A case study of a real gas turbine is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The case results suggest that proposed approach can significantly enhance the efficiency of FMECA analysis.

Designing modern Cyber-Physical systems (CPSs) is posing new challenges to both industrial practitioners and academics. In this context, adopting cutting-edge paradigms, such as model-based systems engineering (MBSE), DevOps, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), can offer new opportunities for improving CPS design automation. While such paradigms are already jointly used in the research community to support system design activities, there is a need to fill the gap between academia and industrial practitioners. Indeed, system specification is still mainly performed manually in many industrial projects. In this paper, we present a collaboration between industrial and academic partners of the AIDOaRt European project towards a model-based approach for CPS engineering applied in one of the project use cases. We identify key challenges and corresponding solutions to enhance the automation of CPS design processes. Notably, we consider a combination of prescriptive modeling, model transformations, model views, modeling process mining, and AI-based modeling recommendations. As an initial evaluation, the proposed approach is applied to a practical industrial case study.

Security is one of the biggest concerns for cloud infrastructures. Cloud infrastructures are susceptible to a wide range of threats, including external and internal threats. Without proper security mechanisms, these threats may compromise the security properties of services hosted in the cloud. To secure cloud infrastructures against threats, it is crucial to perform a threat analysis in the early stages of the system development (i.e., during the design of the system architecture). Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment (TARA) is a well-known approach used by researchers and practitioners. TARA consists of several activities, including asset identification, threat scenarios, attack paths, and risk treatment decision. The risk treatment decision activity involves selecting appropriate security measures to mitigate the identified threat scenarios. In the current state of practice, TARA activities are performed manually by engineers, leading to time-consuming processes and potential errors. In our previous article, we proposed a logic programming tool to enable the automation of TARA activities, including the recommendation of cloud-based security measures. This article proposes Security Pattern Synthesis, a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) plugin for securing cloud architectures. Security Pattern Synthesis is implemented in Java while using the previously proposed logic-programming tool as a backend to reason about the security of the cloud architecture. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

In this paper, we propose a method for aligning models with their realization through the application of model-based systems engineering. Our approach is divided into three steps. (1) Firstly, we leverage domain expertise and the Unified Architecture Framework to establish a reference model that fundamentally describes some domain. (2) Subsequently, we instantiate the reference model as specific models tailored to different scenarios within the domain. (3) Finally, we incorporate corresponding run logic directly into both the reference model and the specific models. In total, we thus provide a practical means to ensure that every implementation result is justified by business demand. We demonstrate our approach using the example of maritime object detection as a specific application (specific model / implementation element) of automatic target recognition as a service reoccurring in various forms (reference model element). Our approach facilitates a more seamless integration of models and implementation, fostering enhanced Business-IT alignment.

In the fact of increasing complexity of aircraft development programs, development processes of aircraft and their subsystems are continuously becoming complicated which leads to the growing risks of development cost across the entire lifecycle. In this paper, we propose a model-based systems engineering approach to support process modeling of aircraft development using a multi-architecture modeling language KARMA. At the same time, property verification and hybrid automata simulation are used implement the static cost analysis of each work task and dynamic cost analysis of the entire development process. Finally through one case study, a system-level aircraft development process "V model" is created which cost analysis is implemented by the KARMA language. From the result, we find the KARMA language enables to integrate process modeling with static analysis and dynamic analysis of development process in a multi-architecture modeling tool MetaGraph.

Digital Twin technology has been widely applied in various industry domains. Modern industrial systems are highly complex consisting of multiple interrelated systems, subsystems and components. During the lifecycle of an industrial system, multiple digital twin models might be created related to different domains and lifecycle phases. The integration of these relevant models is crucial for creating higher-level intelligent systems. The Cognitive Digital Twin (CDT) concept has been proposed to address this challenge by empowering digital twins with augmented semantic capabilities. It aims at identifying the dynamics and interrelationships of virtual models, thus to enhance complexity management capability and to support decision-making during the entire system lifecycle. This paper aims to explore the CDT concept and its core elements following a systems engineering approach. A conceptual architecture is designed according to the ISO 42010 standard to support CDT development;and an application framework enabled by knowledge graph is provided to guide the CDT applications. In addition, an enabling tool-chain is proposed corresponding to the framework to facilitate the implementation of CDT. Finally, a case study is conducted, based on simulation experiments as a proof-of-concept.

model-based systems engineering (MBSE) combines the rigor of systems engineering with formal models to support communication in multidisciplinary engineering. With industrial adoption of MBSE, the maturity of modeling environments supporting MBSE increased. Still, efficient means to integrate computational design methods in MBSE are missing. Here, we present a method that enables systems engineers to directly integrate computational methods for solving design tasks. The method relies on established semantics of the systems modeling language (SysML) and therefore can be directly integrated with existing system models so to avoid redundant knowledge formalizations for computational methods. Next, model transformations are applied to generate the mathematical model based on the relevant parts of the system model. These temporary models are used to solve the design task and generate output that is fed back to the system model. Therefore, the proposed method contributes by relying on a single and comprehensible knowledge formalization understandable to engineers. Further, it enables systems engineers to formalize design tasks for automated reasoning themselves by bundling the complexity of the mathematical modeling within the model transformations. An industrial case for designing sealing elements for piping is used to illustrate the potential of the proposed approach. Future work needs to further elaborate on automated selection of appropriate mathematical methods as well as computational support for the identification of opportunities for integration of computational design methods readily while developing a system model.

When using model-based systems engineering (MBSE) to develop complex systems, models using different syntax and semantics are typically implemented in a heterogeneous environment which leads to difficulties to realize data integrations across the entire lifecycle. Specifically, seamless exchanges between models of different modeling tools are needed to support system lifecycle activities such as requirement analysis, function analysis, verification and validation. This article illustrates a service-oriented approach to support model integration for model-based systems engineering, especially between architecture design and system verification. First, a set of semantic mapping rules between architecture models and simulation models based on Open Service of Lifecycle Collaboration (OSLC) are proposed to support the formalization of technical resources (models, data, APIs). Then OSLC adapters are developed to transform models, data and APIs into web-based services. The services are deployed by a service discovering plug-in within a specific modeling tool for model information exchange. The approach is illustrated by a case study on KARMA architecture model and modelica simulation model for a six-degree-of-freedom robot (RobotR3) system. We evaluate the availability and efficiency of this method from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. The results show that our approach is effective in model and data integration.
