Exploring and managing the complexity of large infrastructure projects with network theory and model-based systems engineering-The example of radioactive waste disposal

Given that model-based systems engineering (MBSE) captures the structure and behavior of an engineered system in an overarching system model, MBSE appears to be a promising approach to managing large infrastructure projects (LIPs). However, it is not apparent how to most appropriately organize the associated system model-and hence the infrastructure project itself. Furthermore, MBSE may today not be readily accepted by the civil engineering industry. In this research, a hypothetical project for the geological disposal of radioactive waste is taken as an example of an LIP and initial system models of the entire disposal project are created. Furthermore, a network representation of the project is generated and examined with network theory. based on the results, different project organizations are synthesized and evaluated. Eventually, the initial system models are updated to accommodate the most suitable organization according to the network analysis results. In addition, the perception of, and attitude toward MBSE is assessed by means of a cross-sectional survey in a civil engineering company. The generation of system models of LIPs is found to be straightforward. Network theory is able to unveil the complex structure of LIPs in order to identify the most suitable way to organize them and the associated system models. The survey results suggest that MBSE may find broad acceptance in the civil engineering industry.

A study of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) applied to a small-lift launch facility is presented. The research uses systems modeling Language (SysML) products and functional diagrams to document the ground systems on a launch pad servicing a small class payload (0-2 tons). With the projected growth in launch cadence of small-lift rockets in the coming decade, there is a need to design increasingly complex launch systems with greater efficiency. The potential improvements in project communication, quality, and productivity are explored by developing a model following the ISO/IEC 15288 technical process framework and the International Council on systems engineering (INCOSE) Object-Oriented systems engineering Method (OOSEM) methodology. The stakeholder requirements are defined and analyzed to provide traceability to individual systems and subsystems. An architecture is proposed by generating engineering artifacts such as piping and instrumentation drawings. The concepts are verified and validated by performing engineering trade studies concentrated on the pneumatic and fuel subsystems.

The Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (TALOS) project is a Special Operations Command (SOCOM) initiative to enhance operator performance, situational awareness, survivability, and lethality. The project adopted a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach to manage the structural system configuration and support the test and integration plan. This approach relies on a unified model in the systems modeling Language (SysML) to capture the logical and physical aspects of the system design. The MBSE approach was used to develop a test and evaluation framework that allows for traceability of test plans back to performance requirements. Additionally, the model supported the integration of hardware and software as well as the design of wire harnesses; the MBSE approach provided benefits over more traditional integration techniques. This paper provides lessons learned including the need to balance requirements analysis with functional characterization and the products that were generated from the model. Overall the adoption of the MBSE approach provided lessons on managing a system’s configuration among a distributed team.

In the fiercely competitive landscape of modern manufacturing, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are navigating an intricate web of challenges and opportunities. This environment demands constant adaptation and innovation to remain relevant and profitable while upholding sustainable practices. Nowadays, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) capabilities have evolved to a state where collaboration, handling complexity, and integrating sustainability into design processes are streamlined. By leveraging digital models to holistically represent and analyze complex systems, MBSE empowers designers to systematically incorporate sustainability issues and make informed decisions. This research elucidates the application of MBSE in fulfilling stakeholders' needs, tracing integrated functional requirements, and finding solution alternatives for accelerating the movement toward sustainable factories. In this regard, the Cameo System modeler is utilized for sustainable factory design decomposition. To facilitate factories' sustainability assessment, the first level of functional requirements is defined based on axiomatic design theory and sustainability metrics which are highlighted in the European Sustainability Report Standard (ESRS). To present the application of Cameo, the Austrian Post sustainability report is analyzed based on assumed sustainability targets. Results show how MBSE can help stakeholders, managers, and designers have a big picture of a sustainable factory in one place and provide a resilient decision-making environment.

Psychiatric and substance use disorders, such as depression and/or opioid use disorders, are categorized as behavioural health conditions. In the United States, approximately one in four adults suffers from a behavioural health condition in any given year. These conditions are prevalent and costly. The current delivery of behavioural health services follows a primary to specialty referral practice, which has led to poor treatment initiation outcomes. These poor outcomes stem from a care delivery model that does not fully cater to the needs of patients. Patients prefer to receive both physical and mental health care within a single primary care setting. In response, healthcare delivery systems developed clinical models and approaches for behavioural health integration into primary care. These clinical models portray a sense of integration. However, these clinical models lack the necessary detail to describe the key components of a system and instead focus heavily on describing the system's physical form. By doing so, clinical models lack the ability to incorporate a broader range of patient needs and the details to describe a system to ensure it produces its intended outcomes. These limitations lead to variations in implementation success. Systematic approaches, including the development of system models, have been used to describe and develop complex systems. In this paper, we detail the design considerations for a patient-centred system model and describe its utilization in an implementation of a patient-centered behavioural health integration into primary care.

In this third decade of systems engineering in the twenty-first century, it is important to develop and demonstrate practical methods to exploit machine-readable models in the engineering of systems. Substantial investment has been made in languages and modelling tools for developing models. A key problem is that system architects and engineers work in a multidisciplinary environment in which models are not the product of any one individual. This paper provides preliminary results of a formal approach to specify models and structure preserving transformations between them that support model synchronization. This is an important area of research and practice in software engineering. However, it is limited to synchronization at the code level of systems. This paper leverages previous research of the authors to define a core fractal for interpretation of concepts into model specifications and transformation between models. This fractal is used to extend the concept of synchronization of models to the system level and is demonstrated through a practical engineering example for an advanced driver assistance system.

In this paper, we propose a method for aligning models with their realization through the application of model-based systems engineering. Our approach is divided into three steps. (1) Firstly, we leverage domain expertise and the Unified Architecture Framework to establish a reference model that fundamentally describes some domain. (2) Subsequently, we instantiate the reference model as specific models tailored to different scenarios within the domain. (3) Finally, we incorporate corresponding run logic directly into both the reference model and the specific models. In total, we thus provide a practical means to ensure that every implementation result is justified by business demand. We demonstrate our approach using the example of maritime object detection as a specific application (specific model / implementation element) of automatic target recognition as a service reoccurring in various forms (reference model element). Our approach facilitates a more seamless integration of models and implementation, fostering enhanced Business-IT alignment.

The purpose of this paper is to initiate the design of a framework for defining and capturing disaster management systems (DMS). Recognizing the management of disasters as complex adaptive systems (CAS), whose performance cannot be improved through the isolated optimization of their constituents, this paper proposes the adoption of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) to capturing the behavior of such systems, as well as the structure responsible for their behaviors. Using a domain-independent language such as the systems modeling language (SysML) to implement MBSE, the holistic approach proposed here effectively introduces a new paradigm in disaster management studies that is aimed at reducing the aforementioned complexity. By enforcing traceability between the DMS subsystems, and by leveraging artifacts such as viewpoints to develop perspectives that are tailored to specific stakeholders and users, it is anticipated that a MBSE-based holistic approach such as the one presented in this paper will promote proper use of the scientific method for the design, verification, validation and improvement of disaster management systems.

Digitization is changing many fields of our society. Technical systems in particular are undergoing major changes. Tomorrow's systems are characterized by their autonomy, high level of interconnection, and socio-technical interfaces. These systems can no longer be developed by one engineering discipline alone, but require interdisciplinary development teams. This type of development requires a high degree of collaboration, communication, and orchestration. model-based systems engineering (MBSE) supports engineers in the interdisciplinary development of future systems. MBSE uses models to generate a unified and complete view of the system. This allows changes to be easily tracked and the visualization helps to understand the system discipline-independent. The creation of these models still requires high effort. New AI technologies can be used to derive potential assistant systems in the context of MBSE. This paper shows realized examples of AI-based assistance systems. They are motivated by the experience of using MBSE in research and development projects with high complexity and inter-disciplinarity. The presented results are defined and first prototypically realized assistance within student projects.

Today's systems engineering is challenged by an increasing number of requirements aimed at smaller target audiences. This leads to a rise of variants to fulfill individual consumer demands. Because of the complexity introduced by the surge of software-defined mechatronic systems, deriving new variants manually is becoming increasingly difficult. As of today, however, there exist no well- established methods or tools to assist in variant generation. This article aims to fill this gap by presenting a novel approach that enables an automated, requirements-based variant generation. For this purpose, a variant meta-model capable of both storing and interconnecting physical parameters and qualitative criteria of system components is designed and translated into a machine-readable form. The resulting data model is described to be stored inside a multi-model database, allowing for the integration of past project data by using data mining techniques. Additionally, a variant generation algorithm with a strategy for targeted exploration of the variant solution space is presented. The complete approach is realized by implementing a demo application that includes both the multi-model database and a java application for algorithm execution. Our work is evaluated by benchmarks using a dataset with real-world components, indicating that requirements-conform variants can be generated in a reasonable time.
