This research-to-practice WIP (Work In Progress) presents the design and assessment of online model-based systems engineering (MBSE) modules for practicing engineers using social constructivism as a theoretical framework. Despite many advantages of MBSE, experts in this field are still scarce in the current engineering workforce. To address this need, an online module that will be deployed in the summer of 2020 targets practicing engineers as its learners to equip them with MBSErelated knowledge and skills. In industry, teams working on MBSE-related projects usually collaborate across multidisciplinary units. Therefore, social interaction plays an integral role in MBSE training programs. To understand how group interaction could foster learning in online engineering modules, we apply social constructivism as a theoretical framework to engage learners in meaningful interactions and facilitate the acquisition and application of knowledge. The modules will utilize deep-level, student-centered, small-group discussions, and peer review between student groups as forms of social learning in authentic engineering assignments. The assessment of the modules will focus on the effectiveness of social learning in promoting the mastery and application of content knowledge.

We present the work on applying model-based systems engineering (MBSE) to the conceptual design of the MANIFEST multi-object fiber positioner for the Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT). We use MBSE early in the system lifecycle to help identify and document the MANIFEST system characteristics. The application of MBSE allows the discovery of potential problems and their solutions. In addition, the MBSE facilitates managing complexity, reducing technical risk, and performing risk analyses. First, we report the benefits of the modeling process in capturing the problem domain model and stakeholder needs. Then, present the model framework, systems modeling language, and software tool to accomplish our goals for MANIFEST. Next, we report on the MANIFEST architectural products, the structural and functional elements, associated mappings, and relationships, including the interfaces between subsystems and external systems. Then we discuss the model presentation and report generation to communicate design aspects to stakeholders. Finally, we conclude with remarks about the effectiveness of the MBSE approach for the MANIFEST conceptual design.

This paper presents a new approach to model-based systems engineering (MBSE) called "Attribute-Oriented modeling." This approach is used with a modeling language such as UML. The central concept of this approach is that model elements used in models of systems in a particular domain should be defined with a set of attributes that the system components to be modeled possess. The model of a system is created by specifying, for each component in the system, the values of the attributes that the model element that represents the component has.

Two mega trends in product engineering require a re-thinking of established ways of working: The technical evolution to intelligent technical systems and the re-design of value creation networks, now integrating partners from all over the world. Due to this, there is a growing interest in the systems engineering ( SE) approach. Yet, the implementation of SE in organizational structures is challenging for enterprises outside aircraft industry. FRIEDENTHAL suggests the deployment of a multidisciplinary SE-team responsible for requirements, architecture and analysis of the system as well as integrating and testing. We expect the shared service concept known from administration as promising to generate synergistic effects for a distributed value creation: Shared services centralize a subset of existing decentralized business functions in semi-autonomous business units. This promotes amongst others value generation, quality and improved service for internal customers. We present a first approach for implementing model-based systems engineering based on Shared Services.

Academia or workforce development workshops can both increase the plausibility of a streamlined transition from a document-centric approach to MBSE frameworks, and aid the integration of model-based systems engineering (MBSE) within the current industry and the challenges faced, introducing MBSE concepts, tools, and languages. This paper reports on an online model-based system engineering Bootcamp conducted in collaboration with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and The University of Texas at El Paso. The importance of MBSE is emphasized throughout the online Bootcamp to a diverse group of audience i.e., students, faculty, and industry professionals unfamiliar with systems engineering. A set of predefined questions through pre and post Bootcamp surveys aided in determining the perceptions of MBSE and the effectiveness of the Bootcamp in increasing the knowledge of MBSE amongst participants. A positive knowledge gain was observed on the importance of systems modeling and MBSE across students, faculty, and industry personnel participants indicating the effectiveness of the online Bootcamp. A set of open-ended questions were targeted specifically for industry professionals from manufacturing, aerospace, healthcare, transportation, and software domains attending the Bootcamp for capturing the perceived challenges and obstacles according to them for implementing model-based systems engineering in their organizations.

model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is regarded as the key to face the challenges of tomorrow's product engineering. Core of the MBSE is the so called system model, enabling a consistent specification of the product from different points of view. Nevertheless, we fear that the MBSE vision of INCOSE is not realistically achievable: There is much focus on the technical issues of MBSE, e.g. automatic code generation. But classical systems engineering (SE) issues and concerns driven by stakeholders as product managers or project management closely working together with the systems engineer are neglected. This is critical, as SE is a holistic approach, the mentioned stakeholders definitely gain benefits of the MBSE and they furthermore have the possibility to accelerate MBSE introduction due to budget concerns. Thus, there is a critical need to connect SE activities to the MBSE domain providing more acceptance to the approach. We present a concept to integrate SE and MBSE and exemplarily connect a stakeholder analysis as presentative method for SE and product management issues to the system model. The foundation for this approach is the comprehension of the distinction of model and view, e.g. proposed by ISO/IEC 42010.

"model-based systems engineering" is currently a hot topic at INCOSE (International Council on systems engineering). It involves multidisciplinary development based on the usage of models as main artifact. The frequent use of models during the development of the pico-satellite MOVE (Munich Orbital Verification Experiment) was attributed to the long history of the chair for astronautics at the TU Munchen with systems engineering. The development of MOVE displayed many of the characteristics of a real-world multidisciplinary engineering project and resulted in a successful space flight of the engineered satellite. Within the satellite, communication was lead through a central bus between the different components and required expertise and coordination from all of the involved disciplines. An equivalent task of distributing information and energy can be found in automotive engineering: in the wire-harness. In contrast to the satellite bus, it does not distribute centrally created coordination commands, but supports the orchestration between distributed systems. Even though these two systems and their development processes are inherently different, they exhibit similar difficulties during their design phase (e.g. with compatibility) and can be modeled similarly. This paper uses the design of satellite bus systems and automotive wire-harnesses as examples, describes their common pitfalls, explains "model-based systems engineering" and demonstrates how the development of communication systems in both satellite and automotive engineering can benefit from relying on it in early design and concept phases.

model-based systems engineering (MBSE) can address many challenges of modern systems development. However, due to its comprehensive coverage, process maturity improvement can take many directions, potentially leading to sub-optimal solutions. Therefore, selecting disciplines most aligned to the development team context and goal is key to higher returns on investment. This research aims to relate goals driving MBSE process maturity improvement and candidate capabilities, thus, providing recommendations that highest yield the expected benefits. For this means, we propose a goal-benefit model and respective operationalization method. The model relates MBSE capabilities with benefits generated upon implementation and process improvement goals. Our approach results in a list of MBSE capabilities prioritized according to the improvement goal. The approach was applied to eight development teams located in Germany and Brazil. We also provide a sensitivity analysis to validate the model. The approach was assessed positively by the case study participants, who stated that it provides a starting ground for process maturity improvement efforts.

Industrial products are becoming increasingly complex due to the use and development of mechatronic systems. This increasing complexity is addressed by virtual representations of the systems in the form of interdisciplinary models. model-based systems engineering (MBSE) supports product development from the early development phase through validation, verification and integration up to later life cycle phases of the product by means of system modeling. Typical drivers for innovations in the industrial environment are business viability, technology driven feasibility and human driven desirability. While business viability and feasibility are considered in most product development processes and innovation driven projects, the human factor is often neglected in this context. This is addressed by a MBSE Capability and Maturation Matrix (CMM), which consists of capabilities for the acquisition and mastering of the MBSE competencies. The authors have considered Design Thinking as a feasible approach to transfer MBSE knowledge and thus support this acquisition MBSE competencies. This publication shall present the first findings on the application of Design Thinking for the creation of a user-centered MBSE introduction event. This event shall be used in further iterative steps to teach non-experts in the MBSE field the required competencies for their work and thus support the CMM development capability.

The present paper focuses on the model-based systems engineering of a battery electric vehicle called FReDy with intelligent chassis systems. This research vehicle is equipped with two electric drives on the rear axle that are positioned close to the wheels. FReDy combines electric traction with an intelligent chassis consisting of four independent active wheel modules and is a fully active electric vehicle. Using a hierarchically structured vehicle management the research vehicle FReDy enables driving that is optimized with regard as well to energy consumption as to driving dynamics and driving safety. Conception and realization of the vehicle are performed by means of a structured procedure in a model-based, hierarchical approach of systems engineering.
