With the increasing integration of multiple disciplines, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has become more beneficial for the development of automated production systems. However, even though discipline-specific models can be connected via a system model, how to apply MBSE in a cross-disciplinary context in the industry remains challenging due to complex organization, inefficient communication and limited knowledge of the staff. In this paper, a workflow of automated production system development combining MBSE, sociology and team collaboration is proposed and leveraged against the traditional workflow. BPMN+I is applied for modeling cross-disciplinary collaborations and assessing team and organizational factors.

Gas turbine systems operate in high temperature and high pressure conditions, which easily lead to performance degradation or various serious failures. The reliability is one of the most important attributes to monitor the gas turbine safety. Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) is a well-known approach to systematically analyze the gas turbine reliability. However, traditional document-centric implementation of FMECA requires manual recording of fault related information. Such implementation approach is prone to human error and tedious. As an evolving approach, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has been applied in many industries to support system design, analysis and management. In this study, an automatic FMECA analysis approach for gas turbine systems is proposed based on MBSE. The FMECA architecture model is established according to the SysML diagrams of internal block diagram and block definition diagram. The topology between FMECA related concepts is characterized through the constructed architecture model. Then, the Design Structure Matrices is used to realize the risk analysis automatically. A case study of a real gas turbine is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The case results suggest that proposed approach can significantly enhance the efficiency of FMECA analysis.

Designing modern Cyber-Physical systems (CPSs) is posing new challenges to both industrial practitioners and academics. In this context, adopting cutting-edge paradigms, such as model-based systems engineering (MBSE), DevOps, and Artificial Intelligence (AI), can offer new opportunities for improving CPS design automation. While such paradigms are already jointly used in the research community to support system design activities, there is a need to fill the gap between academia and industrial practitioners. Indeed, system specification is still mainly performed manually in many industrial projects. In this paper, we present a collaboration between industrial and academic partners of the AIDOaRt European project towards a model-based approach for CPS engineering applied in one of the project use cases. We identify key challenges and corresponding solutions to enhance the automation of CPS design processes. Notably, we consider a combination of prescriptive modeling, model transformations, model views, modeling process mining, and AI-based modeling recommendations. As an initial evaluation, the proposed approach is applied to a practical industrial case study.

Security is one of the biggest concerns for cloud infrastructures. Cloud infrastructures are susceptible to a wide range of threats, including external and internal threats. Without proper security mechanisms, these threats may compromise the security properties of services hosted in the cloud. To secure cloud infrastructures against threats, it is crucial to perform a threat analysis in the early stages of the system development (i.e., during the design of the system architecture). Threat Analysis and Risk Assessment (TARA) is a well-known approach used by researchers and practitioners. TARA consists of several activities, including asset identification, threat scenarios, attack paths, and risk treatment decision. The risk treatment decision activity involves selecting appropriate security measures to mitigate the identified threat scenarios. In the current state of practice, TARA activities are performed manually by engineers, leading to time-consuming processes and potential errors. In our previous article, we proposed a logic programming tool to enable the automation of TARA activities, including the recommendation of cloud-based security measures. This article proposes Security Pattern Synthesis, a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) plugin for securing cloud architectures. Security Pattern Synthesis is implemented in Java while using the previously proposed logic-programming tool as a backend to reason about the security of the cloud architecture. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

We have designed, developed and deployed a unique edX massive open online course (MOOC) environment for teaching model-based systems engineering (MBSE) with Object-Process Methodology (OPM) ISO 19450. In this environment, OPCloud, an OPM cloud based conceptual modeling environment, has been embedded in the edX environment. This has enabled us, as the course instructors, to teach MBSE with an industrial-strength tool that students can experience first-hand. Students received real-time feedback on their performance, along with guidance on what they missed and the option to resubmit. We describe the architecture of this combined MOOC-modeling environment and report on preliminary performance results.

[Context] model-based systems engineering (MBSE) advocates the integrated use of models throughout all development phases of a system development life-cycle. It is also often suggested as a solution to cope with the challenges of engineering complex systems. However, MBSE adoption is no trivial task and companies, especially large ones, struggle to achieve it in a timely and effective way. [Goal] We aim to discover what are the best practices and strategies to implement MBSE in companies that develop embedded software systems. [Method] Using an inductive-deductive research approach, we conducted 14 semi-structured interviews with experts from 10 companies. Further, we analyzed the data and drew some conclusions which were validated by an on-line questionnaire in a triangulation fashion. [Results] Our findings are summarized in an empirically validated list of 18 best practices for MBSE adoption and through a prioritized list of the 5 most important best practices. [Conclusions] Raising engineers' awareness regarding MBSE advantages and acquiring experience through small projects are considered the most important practices to increase the success of MBSE adoption.

Humanity is currently facing an unprecedented chronic disease burden. Healthcare needs have significantly shifted from treating acute to treating chronic conditions. Chronic diseases tend to involve multiple factors with complex interactions between them evidenced by the continually growing medical knowledge base. The health profession requires the ability to manage this rapidly deepening knowledge base to assimilate the lessons from research and clinical care experience by systematically capturing, assessing and translating it into the highest level of reliable care. A more systems approach to practicing medicine exists and is referred to as functional medicine. It takes into account the many subsystems in the human body and their many interactions. Although the science behind treating the patient as a system exists, the application of systems tools and techniques have not been utilized. It is only natural to begin to formalize the systems thinking using the established tools from the systems engineering field. Specifically, this paper is the first to contribute to the need for systems tools in the practice of clinical medicine and includes an example application of model-based systems engineering to clinical medicine.

As systems become more complex, the systems engineering community must find new and more efficient ways of dealing with complexity throughout the system's lifecycle. model-based systems engineering (MBSE) has proven to be effective at managing complexity through the development of systems in a virtual environment. Several languages have been developed in the spirit of MBSE;however, these languages often do not include the full spectrum of information needed for holistic system solutions. The Lifecycle modeling Language (LML) has been developed to provide extensible language that contains both visualization models and an ontology. When LML is coupled with the systems modeling Language (SysML), the result is a modeling constructs that better supports systems engineering processes across the entire spectrum of lifecycle concerns. This coupling will not only be beneficial today, but could serve as a catalyst for a future MBSE environment.

Due to increasing complexity, the design of Industrial Automation systems are becoming more challenging. In that sense, efforts have been driven to develop model-based systems engineering tools and methods. Despite recent progress, there are still doubts in terms of the practical use and benefits. The main concerns are related to integration among tools and exchange of information between multidisciplinary artifacts. This paper compares Document-Centric engineering (CAx tools) and model-based systems engineering (MBSE) in light of Industrial Automation systems using a real domain. Therefore, a MBSE compliant method was developed and tested. Commercial tools such as the Eclipse platform and the modelicaML language were used to perform abstract modeling while COMOS r from Siemens r was used to develop the multidisciplinary artifacts for project documentation. A Java application was developed to integrate component information between the selected environments. The Openmodelica Compiler was integrated to the platform to allow system and component behavior simulation. Tests have shown that the tools involved on this investigation still need further development concerning maturity and exchange of information from abstract models down to domain specific models. On the other hand, MBSE has proven to be an important tool to match different team approaches and concerns, improving team communication using conceptual-wide and abstract symbols. Connecting abstract modelicaML models to a simulation environment using modelica led to a better understanding of systems behavior prior to realization and provided an analysis environment for early detection of project errors and operational failures.

model-based System engineering (MBSE) employs models and formal languages to support development of complex (systems-of-) systems. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) sees MBSE as a key approach to managing the complexity of system development. However, balancing agility and rigor in MBSE has been reported as a challenging task not yet addressed by modeling tools and frameworks. This is because existing MBSE approaches may enable agility but compromise rigor, or enhance rigor but impede agility. We discuss the challenges of balancing agility and rigor in MBSE across seven systems engineering architectural functions defined by the JPL Integrated model-Centric engineering (IMCE) initiative. We demonstrate how openCAESAR, an open-source MBSE methodology and framework created at JPL, can strike a balance between agility and rigor through a case study of the Kepler16b project and discussion of lessons learned from past projects.
