This paper proposes model-driven techniques to extend IBM's SOMA method towards migrating legacy systems into Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA). The proposal explores how graph-based querying and transformation techniques enable the integration of legacy assets into a new SOA and how these techniques can be integrated into the overall migration process. The presented approach is applied to the identification and migration of services in an open source Java software system.

From Teleo-Reactive specifications to architectural components: A model-driven approach

The Teleo-Reactive approach designed by N.J. Nilsson offers a high-level programming model that permits the development of reactive systems, such as robotic vehicles. Teleo-Reactive programs are written in a manner that allows engineers to define the behaviour of the system while taking into account goals and changes in the state of the environment. This article presents a systematic approach that makes it possible to derive architectural models, with structural descriptions and behaviour, from Teleo-Reactive Programs. The development of reactive systems can therefore benefit significantly from a combination of two approaches: (1) the Teleo-Reactive approach, which is oriented towards a description of the system from the standpoint of the goals identified and the state of the environment and (2) the architectural approach, which is oriented towards the design of component-based software, in which decisions are conditioned by the need to reuse already tested solutions. The integration of this work into a development environment that allows code to be generated via model transformations opens up new possibilities in the development of this type of systems. The proposal is validated through a case study that is representative of the domain, and a survey carried out with post-graduate students. (c) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Real-Time Systems have some characteristics that make them particularly sensitive to architectural decisions. The use of Frameworks and Components has proven effective in improving productivity and software quality, especially when combined with software Product Line approaches. However, the results in terms of software reuse and standardization make the lack of portability of both the design and component-based implementations clear. This article, based on the model-driven software development paradigm, presents an approach that separates the component-based description of real-time applications from their possible implementations on different platforms. This separation is supported by the automatic integration of the code obtained from the input models into object-oriented frameworks. The article also details the architectural decisions taken in the implementation of one of such frameworks, which is used as a case study to illustrate the proposed approach. Finally, a comparison with other alternative approaches is made in terms of development cost.

A steel thread is a software engineering construct that identifies the most important execution paths, including software and hardware elements, through a computer system, while meeting business objectives and demonstrating executable architecture. Steel threads are often used in the context of defining software system architecture. Although there have been references to steel threads in software engineering literature, it is hard to find clear definitions and usage of steel threads in the software industry or among the research community. This paper provides an overview of steel threads in software architecture design and development as well as presenting the contexts of steel threads. In addition, we show how to identify important scenarios and execution paths to construct steel threads and discuss the contexts under which steel threads are applicable in the software development life cycle. We also discuss the roles of steel threads in system development as well as their usability and applicability. Finally, a case study of the use of steel threads in a software system is presented.

Irrigation networks play a fundamental part in the agriculture system of various countries. In the wake of global environmental challenges and economic competition, efficient use of water resources has become extremely important. This can only be achieved by developing smarter control infrastructures for irrigation networks, via the incorporation of communication and computation technologies. Thus, future irrigation networks represent a prime example of cyber physical systems. Effective operation of these complex cyber physical systems is not possible with conventional methods and requires unprecedented levels of automation and decision-support tools. We argue that these cyber physical systems will require a complete model-driven toolset for effective operation. As a first step towards that tool flow, we have developed a model-driven simulation infrastructure for irrigation networks. In the future, we propose to complete the toolset by developing a model-driven configuration infrastructure. Our contributions in this paper include the development of a domain-specific modeling language (DSML) for irrigation networks, implementation of this DSML in Generic modeling Environment (GME), and automatic simulator M-file generation capability from the DSML-based case diagram of an arbitrary irrigation network. Moreover, we present case studies of water distribution and flood management to show the utility as well as the effectiveness of our approach. We also present the performance of our toolset for the realistic scenario of irrigation networks in Pakistan.

model-driven software development (MDSD) is promising alternative in software engineering that proposes the use of models, not only as documentation artifacts, but also as first-class entities. Over the past few years, this approach has gained importance due to its proven benefits in terms of reusability and flexibility. However, the well-known problem of software evolution is also relevant in MDSD. When a model evolves, several dependent artifacts may be affected and migration would be necessary. In this paper, we present an approach that aims at effectively detecting changes in models. This approach corresponds to a first step towards the implementation of migration strategies in the context of MDSD. We validate the proposal with the classical example of evolution of model classes from UML 1.4 to UML 2.0.

Companies need to rethink business processes, infrastructures, technologies, staff, etc. according to new demands, strategic goals, and changes in their environment. Information System evolution has been supported by the reengineering process. Since the models are now part of an increasing number of engineering processes and model-driven software development is a well-established paradigm to support information systems, the reengineering process could be improved with the incorporation of the model-driven development paradigm. This paper presents a model-driven organisational reengineering framework to support organisational improvement. The main idea is to get the most out of the existing proposals in model-driven development for the reengineering process (reverse engineering, improvement processes, and forward processes). Methods, techniques, model-driven tools, and perspectives for analysing information systems at a high level of abstraction are presented as a part of this proposal. A reference framework for the reengineering process is established to provide a consistent set of concepts that support the proposed framework. An illustrative example is introduced to present the feasibility of the proposal. The example illustrates the SuperStationery Co. case in order to present a reengineering process to align an existing desk application with a web application that fulfils the strategic goals of the company. Finally, we conclude with an analysis and discussion about lessons learned and future works.

The complex process of adapting pre-packaged applications, such as Oracle or SAP, to an organization's needs is full of challenges. Although detailed, structured, and well-documented methods govern this process, the consulting team implementing the method must spend a huge amount of manual effort to make sure the guidelines of the method are followed as intended by the method author. MATCON breaks down the method content, documents, templates, and work products into reusable objects, and enables them to be cataloged and indexed so these objects can be easily found and reused on subsequent projects. By using models and meta-modeling the reusable methods, we automatically produce a CASE tool to apply these methods, thereby guiding consultants through this complex process. The resulting tool helps consultants create the method deliverables for the initial phases of large customization projects. Our MATCON output, referred to as Consultant Assistant, has shown significant savings in training costs, a 20-30% improvement in productivity, and positive results in large Oracle and SAP implementations.

Ambient Intelligence (AmI) requires Question Answering (QA) systems for providing intuitive interfaces to state natural language questions and obtaining precise answers related to some specific topic. Therefore, adapting QA systems to new restricted domains is an increasingly necessity for these systems to be applied in AmI environments. Unfortunately, research addressing adaptation of QA systems to new domains has two main drawbacks: (i) QA systems are manually tuned, which requires a huge effort in time and cost, and (ii) tuning of QA systems depends on the specific representation scheme of the restricted-domain knowledge, thus hinders incorporation of new resources into the system. To overcome these drawbacks, this paper presents a novel approach based on model-driven development in order to seamlessly integrate textual information and knowledge resources to automatically and effortlessly adapt QA systems to be useful for restricted-domain And environments, such as e-Science.

Domain-specific languages make the relevant details of a domain explicit while omitting the distracting ones. This implies many benefits regarding development speed and quality as well as the exchange of information between expert groups. In order to utilize these benefits for game development, we present a language engineering workflow that describes best practices to identify a reasonable domain abstraction, illustrated by means of a language for 2D Point & Click Adventures. We discuss how this process can be integrated into an agile, iterative development process and what thereby needs to be considered.
