In this paper, the author utilizes typical mistakes of third year undergraduate Computer Science and software engineering students in advanced software engineering courses to categorize and anticipates errors in engineering practice. In elementary courses, the students learn and apply techniques locally to relatively simple problems. In advanced courses the students are trained to select and integrate a number of techniques to solve several interdependent problems encountered in the development of complex systems. In this context, the work of Daniel Kahneman on System 1 (intuitive) and System 2 (rational) thinking is quite relevant to analysis of the patterns leading to cognitive errors. Implications for engineering practice are explored.

Despite the increasing importance of in silico experiments to the scientific discovery process, state-of-the-art software engineering practices are rarely adopted in computational science. To understand the underlying causes for this situation and to identify ways to improve it, we conducted a literature survey on software engineering practices in computational science. We identified recurring key characteristics of scientific software development that are the result of the nature of scientific challenges, the limitations of computers, and the cultural environment of scientific software development. Our findings allow us to point out shortcomings of existing approaches for bridging the gap between software engineering and computational science and to provide an outlook on promising research directions that could contribute to improving the current situation. © 2019 Gesellschaft fur Informatik (GI). ALBA: a model-driven framework for the automatic generation of android location-based apps

In recent years, the number of smartphone users has increased dramatically. These users download millions of apps and use them for various services. Due to the significant demand for mobile apps, developers often seek faster development methods and more effective tools and techniques to generate these apps. Many of these apps are location-based apps in which users receive services based on their geographical location. In this paper, we propose a model-driven approach for the automatic generation of Android location-based mobile apps. Our framework, called ALBA, consists of a domain-specific modeling language, a modeling tool, and a plugin which includes model to code transformations. The modeling tool enables a novice designer to model a location-based app. The model is validated against the predefined constraints and the editor prevents creating invalid models. The designer uses the plugin to generate the Android code of the app. The evaluation of our work is two fold. First, to evaluate the generalizability of the ALBA framework, we conducted an experiment which includes the generation of four industrial location-based apps. Second, to evaluate the usability and quality of both the framework and the generated apps, we conducted a case study consists of three experiments. The results of the evaluation are promising both in terms of the applicability of the framework and the quality of the generated apps.

Cross-Platform Real-Time Collaborative modeling: An Architecture and a Prototype Implementation via ***

Real-time collaboration in model-driven software engineering is gaining increasing attention from both the research and industrial community. This is due to its potential adverse effects on the efficiency of software modeling process. However, current approaches for real-time collaboration are tightly coupled to modeling platforms and language workbenches. To address this issue, we present BUMBLE-CE, the first extensible approach for cross-platform real-time collaborative modeling which is independent of both the modeling platforms and the domain-specific modeling language used by the modelers. One of the main characteristics of BUMBLE-CE is that it allows modelers to work on the head revision of their models as usual and, when necessary, they can start and terminate on-demand real-time collaborative modeling sessions. This paper reports on the requirements driving the design of BUMBLE-CE, its architecture and underlying design decisions, implementation of BUMBLE-CE using *** technologies and an example application of BUMBLE-CE to state machine models realized in Eclipse EMF and Jetbrains MPS.

Using triple graph grammars to realise incremental round-trip engineering

model-driven software engineering is supported with the help of model transformations. At present, the technology for defining and executing uni-directional batch transformations seems to be fairly well developed, while bidirectional and incremental transformations are more difficult to handle. In this study, the authors present a bidirectional and incremental transformation tool for round-trip engineering between class diagrams and Java source code. Unlike other approaches, the tool may work with arbitrary Java code rather than only with source code following specific coding conventions. For its realisation, they selected triple graph grammars (TGGs) because they allow to generate bidirectional incremental transformations from a single set of undirected rules. When applying TGGs, they observed several strengths and weaknesses which are also discussed in this study.

Leveraging BPMN particularities to improve traceability links recovery among requirements and BPMN models

Traceability links recovery (TLR) has been a topic of interest for many years. However, TLR approaches are based on the latent semantics of the software artifacts, and are not equipped to deal with software artifacts that lack those inherent semantics, such as BPMN models. The aim of this work is to enhance TLR approaches in BPMN models by incorporating the linguistic particularities of BPMN models into the TLR process. Our approach runs through a threefold contribution: (1) we identify the particularities of BPMN models;(2) we describe how to leverage the particularities;and (3) we build three variants of the best exploratory TLR approach which specifically cater to BPMN models. The approach is evaluated through both an academic case study and a real-world industrial case study. The results show that incorporating the particularities of BPMN into the TLR process leads the specific approach to improve the traceability results obtained by generalist approaches, maintaining precision levels and improving recall. The novel findings of this paper suggest that there is a benefit in researching and taking in account the particularities of the different kinds of models in order to optimize the results of TLR between requirements and models, instead of relying on generalist approaches.

Case-based exploration of bidirectional transformations in QVT Relations

QVT Relations (QVT-R), a standard issued by the Object Management Group, is a language for the declarative specification of model transformations. This paper focuses on a particularly interesting feature of QVT-R: the declarative specification of bidirectional transformations. Rather than writing two unidirectional transformations separately, a transformation developer may provide a single relational specification which may be executed in both directions. This approach saves specification effort and ensures the consistency of forward and backward transformations. This paper explores QVT-R's support for bidirectional model transformations through a spectrum of transformation cases. The transformation cases vary with respect to several factors such as the size of the transformation definition or the relationships between the metamodels for source and target models. The cases are solved in QVT-R, but may be applied to other bidirectional transformation languages, as well;thus, they may be used as a benchmark for comparing bidirectional transformation languages. In our work, we focus on the following research questions: functionality of bidirectional transformations in terms of relations between source and target models, solvability (which problems may be solved by a single relational specification of a bidirectional transformation), variability (does a bidirectional transformation contain varying elements, i.e., elements being specific to one direction), comprehensibility (referring to the ease of understanding and constructing QVT-R transformations), and the semantic soundness of bidirectional transformations written in QVT-R.

Unified verification and monitoring of executable UML specifications A transformation-free approach

The increasing complexity of embedded systems renders software verification more complex, requiring monitoring and formal techniques, like model-checking. However, to use such techniques, system engineers usually need formal expertise to express the software requirements in a formal language. To facilitate the use of model-checking tools by system engineers, our approach uses a UML model interpreter through which the software requirements can directly be expressed in UML as well. Formal requirements are encoded as UML state machines with the transition guards written in a specific observation language, which expresses predicates on the execution of the system model. Each such executable UML specification can model either a Buchi automaton or an observer automaton, and is synchronously composed with the system, to follow its execution during model-checking. Formal verification can continue at runtime for all deterministic observer automata used during offline verification by deploying them on real embedded systems. Our approach has been evaluated on multiple case studies and is illustrated, in this paper, through the user interface model of a cruise-control system. The automata-based verification results are in line with the verification of the equivalent LTL properties. The runtime overhead during monitoring is proportional to the number of monitors.

Automatic construction of Fuzzy Inference Systems for computerized clinical guidelines and protocols

guidelines and protocols (CGPs) are standard documents with the aim of helping practitioners in their daily work. Their computerization has received much attention in recent years, but it still presents some problems, mainly due to the low sustainability and low adaptability to changes (both in knowledge and technology) of the computerized CGPs. This paper presents an approach to an easy and automatic creation of Fuzzy Inference Systems (FISs), which are suitable for the computerized interpretation of differential diagnoses. The proposed FIS development process is based on applying model-driven software engineering techniques: automatic generation of computer artefacts and separation of concerns. The process focuses on the separation of roles during the design stage: domain experts use a basic editor that allows them to define the categories and factors that will be involved in the FIS in natural language, while knowledge engineers at a later stage refine these elements using a more advanced editor. The whole system has been tested by automatically generating two FISs that have been included in a computerized CGP for the diagnosis of a rare disease called hyperammonemia. A graph-based algorithm for three-way merging of ordered collections in EMF models

In EMF models, ordered collections appear as the values of multi-valued structural features. Traditional, text-based version control systems do not sufficiently support three-way merging of ordered collections inside EMF models since they cannot guarantee a consistent result. The operation three-way merging is defined as follows: based on a common base version b, two alternative versions a(1) and a(2) were developed by copying and modifying the base version. To reconcile these changes, a merged version m is to be created as a common successor of a(1) and a(2). In this paper, we present a graph algorithm to solve the problem of three-way merging of ordered collections in EMF models. Each version of a collection can be represented by means of a linearly ordered graph. To create the merged version, these graphs are combined to a merged collection graph using set formula. To create the merged collection, a generalized topological sort is performed on the merged collection graph. Conflicts occur in case the order of elements cannot be deduced automatically;these conflicts are resolved either interactively or by default rules. We have implemented the merge algorithm in our tool BTMerge, which performs a consistency-preserving three-way merge of versions of EMF models being instances of arbitrary Ecore models. Our implementation relies on an alternative form of representing multiple versions of a collection, namely a versioned collection graph which forms a superimposition of collection versions. The algorithm presented here is purely state-based. Matching and merging of collections are clearly separated sub-problems. Insertions and deletions performed on the elements of the collection are propagated into the merged version in a consistent way. Our algorithm makes only minimal assumptions with regard to the underlying product model and thus may be applied to ordered collections inside plain text or XML files.
