MegaM@Rt2 project is a collaborative initiative of the ECSEL Joint Undertaking under Horizon 2020 EU programme. The project regroups 26 partners from 6 different European countries who jointly address challenges of engineering modern cyberphysical systems by using model-based engineering methods. Since it is a model-based project, we adopted a similar approach for dealing with requirements analysis, architecture, design, roadmap planning and development status checking. In these tasks, document generation methods were particularly useful to create a set of "live" reference specifications and contractual reports. We believe that these methods perfectly demonstrate relevant benefits of the model-based approach and are applicable to many other contexts. Document generation has several challenges, since the produced documents should address several goals and target different audience. Hence, we describe this approach in detail in this paper in the form of an experience report. In essence, the MegaM@Rt2 project had a rather trivial task to document inception phase of the project. The challenge arises from the scale of the project, we had to deal with hundreds of requirements from completely different users, hundreds of features of 29 tools, which had to be mapped to those requirements in order to analyze a gap and devise a roadmap for a consistent tool chain. With limited resource on technical coordination we had to be extremely efficient and thus we adopted a model-based approach that we describe in this paper. The paper should be helpful to project managers and architects who wish to discuss on model-based approaches from a practical side.

model-driven software engineering (MDSE) promotes the use of models for software development. One application of MDSE is the development of embedded systems, whose size and complexity are growing steadily. Usage of MDSE for embedded systems often consists of creating high-level architectures, e.g., with the Unified modeling Language (UML), while the actual implementation of the system is done manually. One reason for this is the semantic gap between high-level UML models and the low-level programming associated with microcontrollers, i.e., imperative programming at the register level. This paper proposes an approach for the seamless integration of hardware interfaces, e.g., GPIOs or UARTs, in UML-based MDSE tools. This enables developers to create their application continously in the MDSE tool, instead of resorting to manual programming outside the environment of the MDSE tool. For this, we present an approach that describes how object-oriented hardware abstraction layers may be seamlessly integrated in MDSE tools. Furthermore, we provide a GUI tool for hardware interfaces that enables the initial configuration of these interfaces. An automatic code generation approach may subsequently be used to generate the initialization code for the hardware interfaces of a microcontroller. We present a use case for our approach in which the software application of an embedded system is ported to several other microcontrollers from different manufacturers.

In the past years, several researchers applied search-based optimization algorithms successfully in the software engineering domain to obtain automatically near-optimal solutions to complex problems posing huge solution spaces. More recently, such algorithms have also been proven useful for solving problems in model engineering. However, applying search-based optimization algorithms to problems in model engineering efficiently and effectively is a challenging endeavor demanding for expertize in both, search-based algorithms as well as model engineering formalisms and techniques. In this paper, we report on our experiences in applying such search-based algorithms for model engineering problems and propose a model-driven approach to ease the adoption of search-based algorithms for the area of model engineering.

software engineering of network-centric Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) enabled Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and services, involves complex design and validation challenges. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, based on the model-driven software engineering paradigm, in particular the domain-specific modeling methodology. We focus on a sub-discipline of AI, namely Machine Learning (ML) and propose the delegation of data analytics and ML to the IoT edge. This way, we may increase the service quality of ML, for example, its availability and performance, regardless of the network conditions, as well as maintaining the privacy, security and sustainability. We let practitioners assign ML tasks to heterogeneous edge devices, including highly resource-constrained embedded microcontrollers with main memories in the order of Kilobytes, and energy consumption in the order of milliwatts. This is known as TinyML. Furthermore, we show how software models with different levels of abstraction, namely platform-independent and platform-specific models can be used in the software development process. Finally, we validate the proposed approach using a case study addressing the predictive maintenance of a hydraulics system with various networked sensors and actuators.

Over the last few years, Parallelism has been gaining increasing importance and multicore processing is now common. Massification of parallelism is driving research and development of novel techniques to overcome current limits of Parallel Computing. However, the scope of parallelization research focuses mainly on ever-increasing performance and much still remains to be accomplished regarding improving productivity in the development of parallel software. This PhD research aims to develop methods and tools to dilute parallel programming complexity and enable nonexpert programmer to fully benefit from a new generation of parallelism-driven programming platforms. Although much work remains to be done to reduce the skill requirements for parallel programming to become within reach of medium-skill programming workforces, it is our belief that this research will help bridge that gap.

Component and Connector (C&C) models, with their corresponding code generators, are widely used by large automotive manufacturers to develop new software functions for embedded systems interacting with their environment;C&C example applications are engine control, remote parking pilots, and traffic sign assistance. This paper presents a complete toolchain to design and compile C&C models to highly-optimized code running on multiple targets including x86/x64, ARM and WebAssembly. One of our contributions are algebraic and threading optimizations to increase execution speed for computationally expensive tasks. A further contribution is an extensive case study with over 50 experiments. This case study compares the runtime speed of the generated code using different compilers and mathematical libraries. These experiments showed that programs produced by our compiler are at least two times faster than the ones compiled by MATLAB/Simulink for machine learning applications such as image clustering for object detection. Additionally, our compiler toolchain provides a complete model-based testing framework and plug-in points for middleware integration. We make all materials including models and toolchains electronically available for inspection and further research.

To the challenge entailed by the complexity and size of software systems, developers have to cooperate and work in parallel on software models. models are changed separately, and they should be merged periodically to obtain an integrated single model. This leads to conflict in merging models. Therefore, several approaches have been proposed to detect such conflicts. For some conflict detection approaches, it is required to describe conflict constraints which are an open issue. In contribution to the solution of this problem, we present a UML profile for modeling conflict conditions which can be used for automatic generation of required constraints. This profile helps to build a conflict model by exploiting example of models which participate in the model merging process. Hence, software engineers are able to define conflicts via a concrete graphical syntax in a familiar UML editor. To evaluate the proposed profile, a case study consisting of two conflicts is performed that shows the usefulness of this profile.

Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) found application in different domains. The development of model-driven Development (MDD) components is facilitated by a wealth of frameworks like EMF, Xtext, and Xtend. However, the development of the necessary IDE components still can take up to several weeks or even months until it can be used in a production environment. The first step during the development of such an MDD infrastructure is to analyse a set of reference applications to deduce the DSL used by the domain experts and the templates used in the generator. The analysis requires technical expertise and is usually performed by MDD infrastructure developers, who have to adhere to a close communication with domain experts and are exposed to high cognitive load and time-consuming tasks. The objective of this PhD project is to reduce the initial effort during the creation of new MDD infrastructure facilities for either a new domain or newly discovered platforms within a known domain. This should be made possible by the (semi-)automatic analysis of multiple codebases using Code Clone Detection (CCD) tools in a defined process flow. Code clones represent schematically redundant and generic code fragments which were found in the provided codebase. In the process, the key steps include (i) choosing appropriate reference applications (ii) distinguishing the codebase by clustering the files, (iii) reviewing the quality of the clusters, (iv) analysing the cluster by tailored CCD, and (v) transforming of the code clones, depending on the code clone type, to extract a DSL and the corresponding generator templates.

When the two disciplines, software product line engineering (SPLE) and model-driven software engineering (MDSE), come together multi-variant model transformations (MVMTs) are almost indispensable tool support. Variability annotations are boolean expressions used in annotative SPL engineering (SPLE) for expressing in which products model elements are visible. Developing the SPL in a model-driven way requires various model representations, e.g., Java models for generating the source code. Although model transformations are the key essence of MDSE and can be used to generate these representations from already existing (model) artifacts, they suffer from not being able to handle the variability annotations automatically. Thus, the developer is forced to annotate target models manually contradicting the goal of both disciplines, MDSE and SPLE, to increase productivity. Recently, approaches have been proposed to solve the problem using, e.g., traces, to propagate annotations without changing the transformation itself. In this paper we utilize a generic framework allowing to evaluate whether the target model of arbitrary (reuse-based) MVMTs was annotated correctly. In particular, for two different product lines we illuminate the transformation of UML class diagrams to Java models from which we finally can generate source code. On the one hand, we examine the quality of different post-processing annotation propagation strategies, on the other hand, the scalability of the framework itself.

Over the last 2 decades, several dedicated languages have been proposed to support model management activities such as model validation, transformation, and code generation. As software systems become more complex, underlying system models grow proportionally in both size and complexity. To keep up, model management languages and their execution engines need to provide increasingly more sophisticated mechanisms for making the most efficient use of the available system resources. Efficiency is particularly important when model-driven technologies are used in the context of low-code platforms where all model processing happens in pay-per-use cloud resources. In this paper, we present our vision for an approach that leverages sophisticated static program analysis of model management programs to identify, load, process and transparently discard relevant model partitions - instead of naively loading the entire models into memory and keeping them loaded for the duration of the execution of the program. In this way, model management programs will be able to process system models faster with a reduced memory footprint, and resources will be freed that will allow them to accommodate even larger models.
