model-driven software product line engineering is complicated: In addition to defining a variability model, developers must deal with a multi-variant domain model. To reduce complexity, filtered editing, inspired by version control, was recently transferred to software product line engineering. On check-out, a single-variant model is derived based on a configuration of its features. On commit, the representatively applied change is scoped with the features to which it is relevant. The here considered dynamic editing model involves different kinds of evolution: The variability model and the domain model are edited concurrently. Features, which define the workspace contents or the scope of the change, may be introduced or deleted. Furthermore, the scope of a change may be revised until commit. The dynamism of this filtered editing model raises consistency problems concerning the evolving relationships between the variability model, the specified configuration, and the scope of the change. This paper formalizes these constraints and presents consistency-preserving algorithms for the workspace operations check-out, commit, as well as a new operation, migrate. This way, the evolution of model-driven software product lines is managed automatically, non-disruptively, and consistently.

In model-driven engineering (MDE) adequate means for collaborative modeling among multiple team members is crucial for large projects. To this end, several approaches exist to identify the operations applied in parallel, to detect conflicts among them, as well as to construct a merged model by incorporating all non-conflicting operations. Conflicts often denote situations where the application of one operation disables the applicability of another operation. Whether one operation disables the other, however, often depends on their application order. To obtain a merged model that maximizes the combined effect of all parallel operations, we propose an automated approach for finding the optimal merging sequence that maximizes the number of successfully applied operations. Therefore, we adapted and used a heuristic search algorithm to explore the huge search space of all possible operation sequences. The validation results on merging various versions of real-world models confirm that our approach finds operation sequences that successfully incorporate a high number of conflicting operations, which are otherwise not reflected in the merge by current approaches.

software systems increasingly require to deal with continuous evolution. In this paper we present the EVOSS tool that has been defined to support the upgrade of free and open source software systems. EVOSS is composed of a simulator and of a fault detector component. The simulator is able to predict failures before they can affect the real system. The fault detector component has been defined to discover inconsistencies in the system configuration model. EVOSS improves the state of the art of current tools, which are able to predict a very limited set of upgrade faults, while they leave a wide range of faults unpredicted.

Digital twins emerge in many disciplines to support engineering, monitoring, controlling, and optimizing cyber-physical systems, such as airplanes, cars, factories, medical devices, or ships. There is an increasing demand to create digital twins as representation of cyber-physical systems and their related models, data traces, aggregated data, and services. Despite a plethora of digital twin applications, there are very few systematic methods to facilitate the modeling of digital twins for a given cyber-physical system. Existing methods focus only on the construction of specific digital twin models and do not consider the integration of these models with the observed cyber-physical system. To mitigate this, we present a fully model-driven method to describe the software of the cyber-physical system, its digital twin information system, and their integration. The integration method relies on MontiArc models of the cyberphysical system's architecture and on UML/P class diagrams from which the digital twin information system is generated. We show the practical application and feasibility of our method on an IoT case study. Explicitly modeling the integration of digital twins and cyberphysical systems eliminates repetitive programming activities and can foster the systematic engineering of digital twins.

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for developing Sense-Compute-Control (SCC) applications for the Internet of Things and Services (IoTS) following the model-driven software engineering (MDSE) methodology. We review the recent approaches to MDSE and argue that Domain Specific modeling (DSM) suites our needs very well. However, in line with the recent trends in cloud computing and the emergence of the IoTS, we believe that both DSM creation tools and DSM solutions that are created via those tools should also be provided to their respective users in a service-oriented fashion through the cloud in the IoTS. In this work, we concentrate on the latter, i.e., DSM solutions that are created via a DSM creation tool. We argue that it makes sense for the owners of a DSM solution in a domain to provide their DSM solution as a service, following the well known software as a Service (SaaS) model, to the interested customers through the IoTS. Our proposed approach concentrates on such a DSM solution for developing SCC applications in the IoTS. However, the idea could be applied to DSM solutions in other domains as well.

Program analyses are an important tool to check if a system fulfills its specification. A typical implementation strategy for program analyses is to use an imperative, general-purpose language like Java;and access the program to be analyzed through libraries for manipulating intermediate code, such as ASM for Java bytecode. We show that this hampers composability, interoperability and reuse of analysis implementations. We propose a complete Ecore-metamodel for Java bytecode as a common basis for program analysis implementations, as well as an Eclipse plug-in to create bytecode metamodel instances from Java bytecode and vice versa. Code analyses can be defined as model transformations in a declarative, domain-specific language. As a consequence, the implementations of program analyses become more composable and more modular in general. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach with a case study.

Refactoring is a key technology for improving the quality of a software system. A higher quality will lead to a clearer structure, which facilitates sharing work across multiple teams. This is important especially in the domain of cyberphysical production systems, where different engineering disciplines meet at their cutting point. IEC 61499 tries to abstract the increasing complexity of such systems. This work gives an overview of existing refactoring techniques from software engineering and provides a first insight on how to apply refactoring to IEC 61499 systems.

Component and Connector (C&C) models, with their corresponding code generators, are widely used by large automotive manufacturers to develop new software functions for embedded systems interacting with their environment;C&C example applications are engine control, remote parking pilots, and traffic sign assistance. This paper presents a complete toolchain to design and compile C&C models to highly-optimized code running on multiple targets including x86/x64, ARM and WebAssembly. One of our contributions are algebraic and threading optimizations to increase execution speed for computationally expensive tasks. A further contribution is an extensive case study with over 50 experiments. This case study compares the runtime speed of the generated code using different compilers and mathematical libraries. These experiments showed that programs produced by our compiler are at least two times faster than the ones compiled by MATLAB/Simulink for machine learning applications such as image clustering for object detection. Additionally, our compiler toolchain provides a complete model-based testing framework and plug-in points for middleware integration. We make all materials including models and toolchains electronically available for inspection and further research.

Strategic Domain-driven Design (DDD) has become an established practice for system decomposition and service identification in recent years. The trend towards microservices increased the popularity of DDD patterns such as Subdomain, Bounded Context, Aggregate and Context Map. In our previous work, we presented a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) providing a clear and concise interpretation of the DDD patterns and their combinations. As a machine-readable description of DDD, the DSL establishes a foundation for systematic service decomposition and DDD-based architecture descriptions that can be refactored and refined by model transformations. The DSL and supporting tools are implemented in the open source project Context Mapper. In this extended version of our previous paper we enhance the DSL grammar to allow domain-driven designers to prototype applications rapidly: they can specify user stories and/or use cases in the DSL, and model transformations can then derive Subdomains and Bounded Contexts automatically. The Context Mapper tool chain supports the continuous, iterative specification and evolution of Context Maps and other service design artifacts. Our validation activities included prototyping, action research, and case studies. This paper illustrates such a transformation chain on the basis of one of our case studies.
