The complexity in automotive systems engineering is increasing over the last decade. Autonomous driving and new comfort functions are some reasons for this growing complexity. With the introduction of multi-core processors in automotive system architectures, the shift from sequential to parallel thinking is more and more important in the different development phases. Based on the EAST-ADL, we present an approach to support the design process for distributed systems by using partitioning as an additional viewpoint on the architecture level. Therefore, we developed an extension to the EAST-ADL for partitioning and show automatic partitioning analysis on different architecture abstractions. These derived partitions can support system designers during the design process of functional architectures, by having a first insight how independent the functional components are structured from a data dependency viewpoint. This gives hints for the allocation of functions to hardware in later stages of the development process.

Modular assembly is a common practice in many industries. The main motivation is to reduce assembly costs, improve reliability, reduce assembly time, and improve logistics and inventory management. The paper presents a methodology for assembly modularization that considers the probability for success of each assembly operation, as well as it cost. It shows that for any given assembly sequence, the expected cost is reduced when the assembly operations are divided evenly among the subassemblies. It also shows that when the process constraints require more operations in the initial subassemblies, it is recommended to sequence the operations in descending order. © 2017

The increasing complexity of modern systems makes their design, development and operation extremely challenging and therefore new systems engineering and modeling and Simulation (M&S) techniques, methods and tools are emerging, also to benefit from distributed simulation environments. In this context, one of the most mature tools is the IEEE 1516-2010-Standard for M&S High Level Architecture (HLA). However, building and maintaining distributed simulations components, based on the IEEE 1516-2010 standard, is still a challenging and costly task. To ease the development of full-fledged HLA-based simulations, the paper proposes the MONADS method that, according to the model-driven systems engineering paradigm, allows one to generate the HLA-based simulation code from SysML models by the use of a chain of model-to-model and model-to-text transformations. The effectiveness of the method is shown through a case study that concerns an Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) approaching and docking to the International Space Station (ISS).

With systems being more and more complex, especially in the case of Nuclear Power Plant design, systems engineering (SE) has seen an increasing interest in the industrial world. Although SE concepts and processes have become well-known, passing from Requirements to Functional Architectures has not been a fully addressed issue. This paper proposes a tooled method that offers three different design perspectives: a Requirement View, a Context View and a Behavioural View. Those views mainly help the designers to express requirements, structure their architecture design, work together, verify and partially validate their design by means of five interconnected Design Specific modelling Languages (DSML). Modern systems are exposing an ever increasing degree of complexity also due to the heterogeneity of the involved components. Distributed simulation is widely recognized as an effective tool to carry out verification and validation activities for heterogeneous and complex systems. Unfortunately, the use of distributed simulation frameworks and related implementation technologies require a proper modeling and simulation know-how, as well as a significant effort and software development skills. As a result, distributed simulation is not typically addressed by systems engineers who do not have the required expertise or background. The MONADS model-driven method has been introduced to overcome such limitations and provide systems engineers with the ability to properly carry out simulation-based verification and validation activities. The method specifically addresses the HLA (High Level Architecture) distributed simulation framework and introduces an automated approach to generate a significant portion of the HLA code from system models specified in SysML, the standard modeling language in the systems engineering field. The automatically obtained code is then to be finalized by a manual programming activity. This paper contributes to make easier and further reduce the effort of such a manual activity by integrating the reactive features of the RxHLA framework into the MONADS method. This integration enables the use of streams to effectively manage HLA-based asynchronous interactions. The paper describes the technical details of the various strategies that can be used to integrate RxHLA into the MONADS method, thus providing a significant degree of flexibility to MONADS users.

Nowadays, the influence of the Industry 4.0 concept has increased the use of technologies that allow systems to be connected and make decisions in a more efficient way to increase productivity and reduce expenses. Among Industry 4.0 portfolio, simulation allows the creation of scenarios to observe, analyze and forecast data without investing in physical equipment. Manufacturing flexibility demands continues changes that must be mirrored in simulation models forcing companies to invest resources in remodelling previous works; this is expensive and time-consuming. To address the continued development of manual simulations, a model is proposed to create fast, adaptable and instantiable semi-automated simulations. In this paper, there is presented the structure found while developing simulation models and, a proprietary solution to address shorter simulation cycles derived from the interaction within the industry. There are also achieved successful results for delving in the case study in the automotive sector. The main result when applying the model is pointed out in the time saved to semi-automate functional and reusable simulation models.

Evaluation of Energy Supply Technologies for Autonomous Cargo Bike-Sharing System

Due to technological advancements and the ever-increasing demand for sustainable modes of transport, research on autonomous driving, shared mobility, and micro-mobility has gained interest, particularly in urban mobility. To facilitate such transport modes, systems like bike-sharing, car-sharing, and shared autonomous cars are implemented. However, the systems mentioned above have traffic congestion, a lack of parking space availability, and on-demand service concerns. To address the aforementioned challenges, we intend to integrate an on-demand shared-use, self-driving cargo-bikes service (OSABS) as a new mode of transportation into the urban mobility ecosystem. The selection of energy supply technology for self-driving cargo bikes is essential for making the OSABS system more environment-friendly and sustainable. Therefore, this paper aims to identify a suitable energy supply technology for our self-driving cargo bikes. Following that, we compare each technology using key performance indicators (KPIs), such as service level, implementation cost, energy consumption cost, charging station utilization, and profit analysis. Furthermore, we use the agent-based simulation model to experiment with the identified energy supply technologies, such as battery-powered and hydrogen fuel cell-powered autonomous cargo bikes.

In industrial production, it is of great importance to have high availability in its production equipment. Well-functioning maintenance is a significant factor for a high level of availability. This can be achieved by minimizing the number of reactive maintenance stops and optimizing scheduled maintenance. New methods for predictive maintenance provide a good opportunity for this, but most technologies that are available today are designed for individual sub-systems and they are rarely designed for a complex, interconnected machine. In the process industry, raw materials are processed into a finished product in a continuous flow through several subsystems and if one subsystem stops, the entire process flow stops. For these processes, it is more important to optimize the maintenance efforts for subsystems so maintenance can take place synchronized. This paper describes a method of supervised control that includes maintenance aspects; health parameters indicating deterioration are included in a MIMO controller. The method is verified in a simulation of a rolling mill with three rollers. The results show that it is possible to optimize the whole complex process including several sub-processes by using a health parameter as a control parameter and broadening the controllability of the system by dividing the workload in a way that all the subsystems reach the desired degradation level for maintenance in a desired optimum time.
