Electrohydrodynamic simulation of electrically controlled droplet generation

An electrohydrodynamic model for the simulation of droplet formation, detachment and motion in an electrically driven droplet generator is introduced. The numerical approach is based on the coupled solution of the multiphase flow problem with the charge continuity equation. For the latter, a modified convection-conduction model is applied, taking into account conductive, capacitive as well as convective electrical currents in the fluid. This allows for a proper description of charge relaxation phenomena in the moving fluid. In particular, the charge received by the droplet after detachment is an important parameter influencing the droplet dynamics in the test chamber. Simulation results are shown for highly conductive acetone droplets and for low conductivity pentane droplets, respectively. The operation characteristic of the droplet generator is investigated by computing droplet sizes and detachment times with respect to the applied voltage. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Computer-integrated Manufacturing employs computers for controlling the process of production in the manufacturing. Programmable Logic Controllers are controlling devices that commonly used for controlling the process of production. In this paper, we construct a tool prototype based on model-integrated computing for designing Programmable Logic Controllers. By exploring the basic elements and relationships in Programmable Logic Controllers, we abstract a meta-model from them and construct the metamodel in Generic modeling Environment. After interpreting the meta-model, an extensible and hierarchical tool prototype is generated. A printing control system is taken as a case study. We could construct the Programmable Logic Controller model of the printing control system in the tool prototype. By using the interpreter we have built, non-Ladder Diagram parts of the printing control system model could be translated into Structured Text.

Development and application of a model-based collaborative analysis and design framework for microgrid power systems

Microgrids have been recognised as essential components of the smart grid. However, recent advances on communication, control, and other intelligent techniques have also significantly increased the design complexity of the microgrids. This calls for attention for the microgrid community to be aware of the latest design challenges and develop visionary approaches to re-evaluate the legacy power system design concepts and analysis tools that are currently utilised for microgrid studies. This study proposes a novel model-based analysis and design framework tailored specifically for microgrids based on the concept of model-integrated computing. The proposed framework aims to provide a flexible and extensible integrated environment to facilitate rapid modelling and simulation of microgrids as well as the implementation of other control, analysis, and microgrid design applications. In this study, the authors focus on demonstrating and examining how the adoption of the proposed framework can effectively reduce the duration and costs of the design process, enhance the experience of the end-users, and improve the overall quality and efficiency of the microgrid study activities. Case studies under various microgrid operating scenarios are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework.

At present, the reusability of developing Embedded OS is still relatively poor. This makes the generation of the configuration file complicated and difficult to guarantee the system's requirement. This paper presents a method of model Interpretation development based on model-integrated computing. Its advantage is that developers have stronger ability of abstracting analysis, analyzing and designing more complicated systems. Furthermore, it can design model interpreter conveniently, which can transform the model into basic code, configuration file and document verification information. This method supports graphical operations, which can configure the operating system easily and intuitively. It supports model-checking and design-time detection for early validation of the system, thus can improve the reusability and efficiency of development. Finally, the example of Micro-kernel OS is introduced to explain the advantage of method.

Privacy policies are rules designed to ensure that individuals' health data are properly protected. Health Information Systems (HIS) are legally required to adhere to these policies. Since privacy policies are imposed on complex software systems, it is extremely hard to reason about their conformance and consistency. In order to address this problem, we have created a model-driven authoring environment to formally specify privacy policies originally defined in legal terms. In our observation, appropriate formalization of our policy language enabled formal analysis of its policies;these features were key to a successful model-driven engineering process. In this paper we present our modeling language and show its semantic anchoring to analyzable logic programs. We report on several projects where our approach is being applied and validated. The review considers the results of computer simulation of conformational transformations of 1,3-dioxanes, 1,3,2-dioxaborinanes, and 1,3-dioxa-2-silacyclohexanes in terms of HF, DFT, and MP2 quantum chemical approximations. The effect of intermolecular association with water and other substrates on the conformational transformations is discussed.

model- and component-based design have yielded dramatic increase in design productivity in several narrowly focused homogeneous domains, such as signal processing, control and aspects of electronic design. However, significant impact on the design and manufacturing of complex cyber-physical systems (CPS) such as vehicles has not yet been achieved. This paper describes challenges of and solution approaches to building a comprehensive design tool suite for complex CPS. The primary driver for the OpenMETA tool chain was to push the boundaries of the "correct-by-construction"principle to decrease significantly the costly design-build-test-redesign cycles in design flows. In the discussions we will focus on the impact of heterogeneity in modeling CPS. This challenge is compounded by the need for rapidly evolving the design flow by changing/updating the selection of modeling languages, analysis and verification tools and synthesis methods. Based on our experience with the development of OpenMETA and with the evaluation of its performance in a complex CPS design challenge we argue that the current vertically integrated, disciplinespecific tool chains for CPS design need to be complemented with horizontal integration layers that support model integration, tool integration and design process integration. This paper will examine the OpenMETA technical approach to construct the new integration layers, provides and overview of the technical framework we established for their implementation and summarize our experience with their application.

The large volume vacuum systems are used in many industrial operations and research laboratories. Accidents in these systems should have a relevant economical and safety impact. A loss of vacuum accident (LOVA) due to a failure of the main vacuum vessel can result in a fast pressurization of the vessel and consequent mobilization dispersion of hazardous internal material through the braches. It is clear that the influence of flow fields, consequence of accidents like LOVA, on dust resuspension is a key safety issue. In order to develop this analysis an experimental facility is been developed: STARDUST. This last facility has been used to improve the knowledge about LOVA to replicate a condition more similar to appropriate operative condition like to kamaks. By the experimental data the boundary conditions have been extrapolated to give the proper input for the 2D thermofluid-dynamics numerical simulations, developed by the commercial CFD numerical code. The benchmark of numerical simulation results with the experimental ones has been used to validate and tune the 2D thermofluid-dynamics numerical model that has been developed by the authors to replicate the LOVA conditions inside STARDUST. In present work, the facility, materials, numerical model, and relevant results will be presented.

Many mobile sensing platforms take advantage of a common ubiquitous mobile device for computation, communication, and control tasks: a mobile phone. Tasks are frequently based on data from GPS sensors, accelerometers, etc. However, the realization of concurrent tasks in these devices introduces unnecessary complexities if new tasks are added without a design overhaul of the system. In this paper, we present a domain-specific modeling language for the specification of concurrent tasks to be deployed on a single mobile device, even if that device has hand-written code on board. The language utilizes mobile device concepts as events, and synthesizes software that runs as independent services. For example, one task may be to send a text message with the current location, if the phone's battery is low in charge. The results are applied to algorithms used by a floating sensor testbed of drifters, which monitor water flow, and the properties of the generated code are examined.

This paper concerns the development of a real-time, reconfigurable hardware triggering system that aims to facilitate setting up and capturing of data from nuclear physics experiment done at iThemba LABS in South Africa. This system replaces an analogue triggering system that involved time-consuming configuration tasks of Nuclear Instrumentation Module (NIM) circuitry. The new system is a model-integrated computing solution built on Scilab, and provides a means to translate a visual configuration model into code to program a FPGA-based reconfigurable hardware platform. This reconfigurable platform replaces many connections and components of the old system that had to be wired-up manually for experiments. A comparative test of the old and new systems was done, including analysis of safe-timing operation. The new system has a number of advantages, in particular: saving time in setting up experiments, a facility to timeshare expensive NIM electronics, and reducing wear and tear on equipment. But the testing also showed difficulties with the new system, such as longer latencies and jitter compared to the old system. Solutions for these problems are reviewed;but further work is needed to improve responsiveness and scalability of the new system to make it applicable to a wider range of the experiments done at iThemba LABS.
