In general, trains are referred to as environment-friendly transportation means when compared e.g. to cars, busses, or aircraft, being modern trains electrified systems. Unfortunately, the costs due to creation and maintenance of railway infrastructures, notably the overhead lines to power the trains, impose boundaries to their expansion potentials. In this respect, the advances in battery technologies are disclosing new opportunities, like serving partially electrified tracks. In particular, on board batteries can be used as backup energy where overhead lines are not available. In such scenarios, analysing battery requirements and evaluating possible solutions is of critical importance. This paper proposes a model-based systems engineering methodology for evaluating the feasibility of heterogeneous battery systems in the railway domain. The methodology leverages separation of concerns to reduce the complexity of the problem and abstracts the different railway system components by means of corresponding simulation models. The methodology is illustrated through a study performed at an industrial partner;in particular, the paper discusses how simulation models have been conceived, refined, validated, and integrated to analyse the properties of various battery configurations for several passenger trains operating on commercial lines in France. Interestingly, the results demonstrate that heterogeneous battery systems provide a suitable trade-off alternative when compared to homogeneous batteries.

The general availability of a robust communication infrastructure facilitates and encourages the connection between everything and anything (Internet of Things-IoT and Cyber-Physical systems-CPS). The composition of CPSs is a reality. Every day new systems are created from arrangements of legacy systems, referred to as CP system of systems (CPSoS). The constituent systems of a CPSoS have very peculiar characteristics, which hinder traditional systems engineering techniques. In addition, it is common for these systems to present many intangible aspects, which further increases the complexity, especially in the representation of their design. This work proposes EMBED-SoSE, an approach to the engineering of critical systems based on shared visual thinking, which aims to facilitate and reduce the cognitive effort in the systems design process.

model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is a noval approach to support complex system development by formalizing system artifacts and development using models. Though MBSE models provide a completely structural formalisms about system development for system developers, such large of domain specific knowledge represented by models cannot be captured as what the developers expect. This leads to a big challenge when MBSE can be widely used for complex system development. In this paper, a knowledge management approach is proposed to support an intelligent question answering scenario when implementing MBSE in system lifecycle. We make use of the GOPPRR approach to support MBSE formalisms which are transformed to knowledge graph models. Then such models provide cues for intelligent question answers through reasoning. In the case study, we make use of an auto-braking system scenario to develop MBSE models and to implement the intelligent question answering. Finally, we find the availability of our approach is evaluated which the domain engineers enable to capture their domain knowledge more efficiently.

This paper introduces a new project supported by the UK Technical Strategy Leadership Group (TSLG) to contribute to its vision of Future Traffic Regulation Optimisation (FuTRO). In this project Newcastle University will closely cooperate with Siemens Rail Automation on developing novel modelling, verification and simulation techniques and tools that support and explore in an integrated approach to efficient dynamic improvement of capacity and energy consumption of railway networks and nodes while ensuring whole systems safety. The SafeCap+ (or SafeCap for FuTRO) project builds on the two previous projects (SafeCap and SafeCap Impact) which have developed a novel modelling environment that helps signalling engineers to design nodes (stations or junctions) in a way that guarantees their safety and allows engineers to explore different design options to select the ones that ensure the improved node capacity.

model-based systems engineering (MBSE) supports the development of complex systems through capturing, communicating, and managing system specifications with an emphasis on the use of modeling languages, tools, and methods. It is a well-known fact that varying levels of effort are required to implement MBSE in industries based on the complexity of the systems a given industry is associated with. This paper shares the results of a survey to industry professionals from Defense, Aerospace, Automotive, Consultancy, Software, and IT industry clusters. The research goal is to understand the current state of perception on what MBSE is and the use of MBSE among different industry clusters. The survey analysis includes a comparison of how MBSE is defined, advantages on the use of MBSE, project types, specific life cycle stage when MBSE is applied, and adoption challenges, as reported by the survey participants. The researchers also aim to trigger discussions in the MBSE community for identifying strategies to address MBSE related challenges tailored to a specific industry type.

In the context of the revolution of energy production and consumption, the urgency of building a multi-energy coupling system is becoming more and more obvious. Compared with the traditional energy system, the construction of a multi-energy coupling system has more needs. With the development of new energy and the complexity and scale of the energy system, the multi-energy coupling system can better meet the needs of the current energy system. To this end, model-based system engineering (MBSE) is introduced in the construction of multienergy coupling systems to adjust adjustable loads and improve energy efficiency. Product iterative design contributes to product performance, stakeholder satisfaction, etc., and is one of the major competencies of complex equipment manufacturing companies. Nevertheless, a large quantity of knowledge is generated during the whole life cycle of complex products, and it is crucial to use this knowledge to implement iterative product design. The application of knowledge in the product design stage is mostly based on knowledge pushing from static knowledge base, which is prone to problems such as inefficient knowledge management and insufficient expression of semantic relationships, and does not combine with product iterative design scenarios. To this end, this paper proposes an iterative design knowledge pushing method combining SysML(system modeling Language) and knowledge graphs. Firstly, the method constructs a SysML-based iterative product design system model for supporting the determination of iterative design intention scenarios. Secondly, the knowledge graph technology is used to unify the management and representation of product iterative design knowledge. Thirdly, the knowledge graph for the iterative design process is constructed oriented to the iterative feedback requirements based on FBS(Function-Behavior-Structure) and knowledge complexity calculation to determine the KDA(Knowledge Demand Anchor). Finally, based on the determined KDA, the design knowledge is pushed with the help of TransR(Translate-R) and random walk algorithms. The proposed method is verified by an illustrated case. © 2023 IEEE.

Under the background of the integration and development of next-generation information technology and the manufacturing industry, production equipment has evolved into Cyber-Physical system (CPS), which seamlessly combine embedded computing, network communication, and high-performance control. In this context, the information model of production equipment has gradually become a pivotal aspect supporting the visualization of the physical operation status of production equipment, optimizing decision-making in the digital realm, and enabling communication and interaction mapping in the cyber-physical space. based on the model-based systems engineering (MBSE) principle, a unified information model for the whole manufacturing process of production equipment is proposed to solve the problems of diverse information types, diverse expression forms and complex model heterogeneity in the field of production equipment information modeling. From the perspectives of communication, knowledge, and geometry, the management activities of production equipment are analyzed, function modules are assigned, and information elements are defined. Fail early, fail often, but ensure that when failure occurs, a learning period is part of the systems development process. Understanding the reasons a system can fail during the development process is key to maximizing mission effectiveness. Would it not be valuable to have a process that allows the designers to recognize when a system is failing to meet the user's requirements early in the development process? Furthermore, would it not be useful for that process to be iterative, to allow the impacts of changes to be seen in real-time, as the concept is defined and the system is designed? What would it be worth to have the ability to accomplish this inside the engineering safety net of model-based systems engineering? This research shows an alternative process to classic systems engineering and optimization analysis, where system design decisions are statically and dynamically modeled in a model-based systems engineering environment and "what if" types of changes are answered and analyzed using embedded simulation. This research demonstrates the process with the use case of a highly relevant real world problem of countering the threat of small commercial unmanned systems to the security of naval installations.

This thesis demonstrates the feasibility of using computer-aided wargames (CAW) as a tool to help determine high-level system requirements for future reconnaissance-capable unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This research uses a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach to establish high-level capability requirements and concepts of operations for the future fleet. Unmanned aerial vehicle design factors in this study include mission altitude, sortie size, and time between launches. Measures of effectiveness (MOEs) delineate which of these factors, or factor combinations, best enhances enemy high-value unit (HVU) detection while minimizing UAV losses in theater. The thesis utilizes Joint Theater Level Simulator-Global Operations (JTLS-GO) as the modeling environment and applies regression tools and visualization techniques to communicate model outcomes. While all three design factors affect the MOEs, results from the model suggest that UAV altitude has the most prominent impact on the MOEs. High altitudes decrease HVU detections but also lower UAV attrition, illustrating potential trade-offs that can be applied to an operational context. The interaction of the number of UAVs with this altitude points to a concept of operations. Swarms of low-altitude UAVs tend to have greater success with detecting HVUs while keeping a relatively low percentage of losses.
