Integrating Materials model-based Definitions into Design, Manufacturing, and Sustainment: A Digital Twin Demonstration of Incorporating Residual Stresses in the Lifecycle Analysis of a Turbine Disk

model-based definitions (MBDs) aim to capture both geometric and non-geometric data in digital product definitions using 3D computer-aided design (CAD) models, as a form of product definition baseline, to disseminate product information across different stages of the lifecycle. MBDs can potentially eliminate error-prone information exchange associated with traditional paper-based drawings and improve the fidelity of component details, captured using 3D CAD models. A component's behavior during its lifecycle stages influences its downstream performance, and if included within the MBD of a part, could be used to forecast performance upfront during the design and explore newer designs to enhance performance. However, current CAD capabilities limit associating behavioral information with the component's shape definition. This paper presents a CAD-based tool to store and retrieve metadata using point objects within a CAD model, creating linkages to spatial locations within the component. The tool is illustrated for storage and retrieval of bulk residual stresses developed during the manufacturing of a turbine disk acquired from process modeling and characterization. Further, variations in residual stress distribution owing to process model uncertainties have been captured as separate instances of the disk's CAD models to represent part-to-part variability as an analogy to track individual serialized components for digital twins. The propagation of varying residual stresses from these CAD models within the damage tolerance analysis performed at critical locations in the disk has been demonstrated. The combination of geometric and non-geometric data inside the MBD, via storage of spatial and feature varying information, presents opportunities to create digital twin(s) of actual component(s).

Hybrid ontology for safety, security, and dependability risk assessments and Security Threat Analysis (STA) method for industrial control systems

This paper introduces a model-based methodology for hybrid reliability, availability, maintainability, safety, and security (RAMSS) risk assessment management, which extends our previous work of model-based, data-driven, support for engineering mission-critical systems. It represents a hybrid risk assessment ontology, which harmonises basic concepts between dependability, safety and security based on well-known industrial standards. based on the proposed ontology, we create a cybersecurity risk analysis method, called Security Threat Analysis (STA), for industrial control systems and successfully demonstrate the method. For the demonstration, we introduce a data model for creating a tool-supported data repository for STA, then implement this repository with a commercial-off-the-shelf tool. We use the repository to carry out an exemplary STA of a nuclear fuel pool cooling control system, assessing a cybersecurity-related hazard. The demonstration suggests that the hybrid RAMSS risk assessment ontology and the related STA data model are ready to be tested in industrial use, offering a structured data repository to support assessment and traceability between the created artefacts.

A spurious actuation of an industrial instrumentation and control (I&C) system is a failure mode where the system or its component inadvertently produces an operation without a justified reason to do so. Design issues leading to spurious failures are difficult to analyse, but pose a high risk for safety. model checking is a formal verification method that can be used for exhaustive analysis of I&C systems. In this paper, we explain how formal properties that address spurious failures can be specified, and how model checking can then be used to verify I&C application logic designs based on vendor-specific function block diagrams. based on over ten years of successful practical projects in the Finnish nuclear industry, we present 21 real-world design issues (representing 37% of all detected issues), each involving a systemic failure that could lead to spurious actuation of nuclear safety I&C. We then describe how random failures of the underlying hardware architecture-another cause for spurious actuation-can also be included in the models. With an experimental evaluation based on real-world nuclear industry models, we demonstrate that our method can be effectively used for the verification of single failure tolerance.

Classification of Simulation models for the model-based Design of Plastic-Metal Hybrid Joints

Laser-based hybrid joints (LBHJ) are promising due to low processing time and costs compared to conventional joining technologies. During the design of LBHJs, considering interactions between different domains (engineering, production, controlling) is required. This yields potential for a cross-domain design and optimization. However, considering the interactions is challenging and leads to iterations and inefficiency in product development. To map the interactions and exploit the potential of LBHJs, model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is a promising approach. With MBSE, domain models are integrated into a central system model and the model parameters are interconnected. To support a model-based design of LBHJs in the different phases of product development, usually several models are required. Therefore, multiple models in different fidelities for the same purpose exist (e.g. finite element and analytical models for joint strength estimation). Currently, this results in complex system models that are difficult to understand, reuse, extend, and maintain. The application of MBSE for the design of LBHJ is therefore inhibited. To overcome this deficit, the integration and linkage of domain models in the system model must be formally structured. Therefore, this paper presents a SysML metamodel, which classifies the domain models, defines their standardized structure and specifies their integration and linkage within the system model. The formal structuring is based on the classification criteria purpose. For each purpose, a superordinate model is built and connected to the domain models. To avoid complex system models that are vulnerable to changes, only superordinate domain models are linked with each other. Domain models can thus be easily replaced, without affecting the consistency of the system model. The results show that system models, built with this approach, can be easily created and used for the model-based design of LBHJs. Furthermore, interactions between

The development of an aircraft industrial system is a complex process which faces the challenge of digital discontinuity in multidisciplinary engineering due to various interfaces between different digital tools, leading to extra development time and costs. This paper proposes an ontology-based system, aiming at functionality integration and design process automation, by models for Manufacturing methodology principles. A tool-agnostic modelling, simulation and validation platform with Discrete Event Simulation and 3D simulation is enabled and demonstrated in a real case study. An ontology layer collecting the domain knowledge enables integration of the proposed system, accelerating the design process and enhancing design quality.

Concept and implementation path for model-based impact analysis in product development

Engineers must evaluate the effects of changes in requirements during product design. Due to strongly linked design, production, and operation networks, these effects have tremendous consequences in cross-company engineering change and configuration management. Implications for development effort, the degree of fulfillment of requirements, functional costs, and follow-up costs in product variants and each system lifecycle stage (e.g., production, validation, and maintenance) must be assessed. Today, this is done without sufficient ICT (information and communication technology) support. In the German research project ImPaKT, reliable answers are to be inferred as to how technical and organizational changes to a partial model affect a complex, interdisciplinary overall system in an ICT-supported way. Therefore, a reference architecture is created using a model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach and a common parameter space. Adapted by corporate networks with their heterogeneous product and application lifecycle management (PLM/ALM) landscapes, homogeneous MBSE networks are created. The ImPaKT technology alliance is convergently developing existing ICT base technologies to enable engineering change management, linking isolated solutions and creating standards for handling changes to develop products faster and cost-efficiently and reduce risks.

A transformation methodology for Capella to Event-B models with DSL verification

Capella/Arcadia helps engineers design complex system models, but as models grew in complexity, simulation and verification became necessary. An automatic model-to-model transformation approach was proposed to interpret the dynamic behavior of the semi-formal Capella models. Custom domain-specific languages were introduced to assess the syntax of these models. The approach was applied to the Adaptive Exterior Light system, transforming Capella models into Event-B models for safety verification. The paper provides traceability between Capella and Event-B meta-models to aid interpretation of verification results.

In response to the challenges introduced by global warming and increased eutrophication, this paper presents an innovative modeling and simulation (M&S)-driven model for developing an automated inland water monitoring system. This system is grounded in a layered Internet of Things (IoT) architecture and seamlessly integrates cloud, fog, and edge computing to enable sophisticated, real-time environmental surveillance and prediction of harmful algal and cyanobacterial blooms (HACBs). Utilizing autonomous boats as mobile data collection units within the edge layer, the system efficiently tracks algae and cyanobacteria proliferation and relays critical data upward through the architecture. These data feed into advanced inference models within the cloud layer, which inform predictive algorithms in the fog layer, orchestrating subsequent data-gathering missions. This paper also details a complete development environment that facilitates the system lifecycle from concept to deployment. The modular design is powered by Discrete Event system Specification (DEVS) and offers unparalleled adaptability, allowing developers to simulate, validate, and deploy modules incrementally and cutting across traditional developmental phases.

Lithium-ion battery systems are a core component for electric mobility, which has become increasingly important in the last decade. The rising number of new manufacturers and model variants also increases competitive pressure. Competition is shortening development times. At the same time, the range of technology options for batteries is growing steadily. Fast and well-founded concept development is becoming even more essential in this increasingly complex environment. For this purpose, various model-based systems engineering (MBSE) methods are analyzed and evaluated. based on this, the battery modeling framework is derived and described, tailored to the needs of battery development. The validation of the methodological approach is demonstrated by the simulation workflow from an electrical cell characterization to the thermal evaluation of different cooling methods.

The multi-disciplinary nature of complex system, such as aero engines, requires a data structure that considers the behavioural interactions within the system. This paper focuses on the management of simulations models and data, with respect to complex system structure. It is proposed to use model based system engineering (MBSE) methodology to support modelling activities and improve the integration of simulation activities in the design process. Current studies on MBSE address the issue of representing and integrating design models with diverse analysis/simulation/behavioural models. However, some limitations can be identified, especially regarding the federation of system presentation for addressing the overall behavioural aspects of the product (multi-physic, local and global behaviours) and thus considering the several system levels. Our proposal is to provide a software framework based on a data model that manages complex system structure. This data model structures behavioural information considering three major interactions: • Interactions between components simulation models, • Interactions considering multi-level behaviours (e.g. use of components simulation for a module simulation) and • Interactions between domain behaviours (e.g. Thermal impact on mechanical). A demonstration of this software framework is proposed, based on the set-up of a mechanical simulation of an aero engine using CATIA/SIMULIA V6.
