model-based approaches for interactive Web applications have neglected vocal interaction. However, ubiquitous multi-device environments call for better support for such modality. In this paper we present a language for logical descriptions of vocal interfaces along with a transformation for deriving corresponding implementations and show an example application. Such results have been integrated into a multi-device authoring environment.

Many industrial applications have large and complex interfaces that grow incrementally over time. Typically, these interfaces will be used by people with different user profiles. The combination of these facts demands a software methodology and tool support that ideally allow consistency checks and configuration in order to avoid a system to become unusable. In this paper, we present an approach in which task models are used throughout the design and development cycle up to the final application. The task model is not only used at design time, but is also used to check for potential problems with e.g. consistency during configuration of the final application.

designers and developers of virtual environments have to consider that providing adaptation in virtual environments is important to comply with users' different characteristics. Due to the many possibilities of adaptation that a designer can think of, it is necessary to support the integration of adaptation in the application in a rapid and practical way. We propose to achieve this by adopting the VR-DeMo model-based user interface design (MBUID) process which supports context. In this paper, we strive to integrate adaptation in virtual environments using a context-aware design process and present a validation of this approach with two case studies, namely supporting the adaptation of switching between interaction techniques and adapting the interaction technique itself. These case studies learned us that adaptation can be easily realized using our context-aware model-based design process.

The Semantic Web has widely spread in the last 10 years as a suitable web platform to support semantics and expressive information seeking. However, one of the main problems with this paradigm is still the representation and manipulation of ontologies as well as the complex relationships that they implicitly represent. Actually, this remains a challenge when unskilled users have to deal with this abstract representation in order to carry out daily solving-problem activities (e.g., designing web applications based on ontologies). This probably made the Semantic Web to decrease in popularity, also being commercially unsupported and overcame by recent technologies and services based on the Web 2.0, the emerging end-user-focused web concept. All in all. the specification of model-based user interfaces fits very well to both paradigms. Accordingly, the aim of this work is to provide new ways of modeling user interfaces based on semantic models that better fit the domain problem. At the same time, we think of exploiting interactive features through current and modern end-user programming elements based on the Web 2.0, finally contributing to an architecture that supports higher interactive end-user interfaces on the web. Interactive software applications are increasingly finding their way to cultural and tourist sites. During the development of a coal mine museum on the former mine site of Beringen (Province of Limburg, Belgium), we explored the possibilities of such interactive systems, suitable for the specific site and the intended target group. In particular, we concentrated on a mobile location-based educational game allowing young visitors to gain insight in the life of the miner, and on an interactive virtual environment (VE) giving the visitor an overview of the vast site, highlighting interesting locations. In this paper we share our experiences with several prototyping techniques in the context of user-centred design (UCD). The different prototyping techniques are chosen depending on the goal and the kind of prototype. Furthermore we describe the interplay between the created prototypes and the applied prototyping techniques.

Intelligent assistance in authoring dynamically generated web interfaces

Since its emergence in the early 1990s, the WWW has become not only an information system of unprecedented size, but a universal platform for the development of services and applications. However, most of the advances in web technologies are intended for professional developers, paying poor attention to end-users with no programming abilities but with explicit needs of creating and customizing web-based presentations. This provides a strong motivation for end-users to act as designers at some point, leading to an emerging role of new computing-related professionals to be considered. This paper is an effort to leverage such difficulties by providing intelligent mechanism to assist end-users in web-based authoring tasks. To carry out such a challenge, intelligent user-monitoring techniques are exploited to obtain high-level information that will be used to infer the user's preferences and assist him throughout the interaction. Furthermore, we report on how iteration patterns can be applied to avoid repetitive tasks that are automatically carried out on behalf of the user. In order to bring off a feasible trade-off between expressivity and ease of use, a user experiment to obtain the user's perception and evaluate the hit-rate of our system is also presented.

In order to support context-dependency in model-based development, three components need to be realised: Context Detection, Context Switching and Context Handling. Context detection is the process for detecting changes in context, while context switching brings the system in the new state that needs to be supported. Finally, context handling adapts the interaction possibilities to the current context. In this paper we discuss an approach for context detection and switching for virtual environments that is based on the Event-Condition-Action paradigm. Both context detection and switching are split-up and supported by our graphical notation for the design of multimodal interaction techniques. The main advantage of this approach is that we provide the designer with a flexible context system, supported by scalable diagrams.

An XML-based language, abstract interaction description language (AIDL), we propose, describes abstracted interactions instead of UI descriptions and includes meanings of these interactions. Computer-based services, which are various appliances and applications operated or utilized with user interface (UI) devices, have pervaded our everyday lives. Our approach, interface client/logic server (ICLS) is a model-based UI architecture supporting UI separation, generation, and migration comprehensively. It enables users to select various devices and services according to their different needs before or during service sessions. AIDL enables our architecture ICLS to handle interactions of specific service domains maintaining the independence of services from specific devices and modalities.

designing a user interface is often a complex undertaking. model-based user interface design is an approach where models and mappings between them form the basis for creating and specifying the design of a user interface. Such models usually include descriptions of the tasks of the prospective user, but there is considerable variation in the other models that are employed. This paper explores the extent to which the notion of interaction space is useful as an abstraction mechanism to reduce the complexity of creating and specifying a user interface design. We present how we designed a specific user interface through use of design techniques and models that employ the notion of interaction space. This design effort departed from the task models in an object-oriented model of the users' problem and application domains. The lessons learned emphasize that the notion of interactions spaces is a useful abstraction mechanism that can help user interface designers exploit object-oriented analysis results and reduce the complexity of designing a user interface.

Within the framework of the INNORISK (Innovative Risk Analysis Methods for Medical Devices) project, a twofold strategy is pursued for prospective usability assessment of Computer-Assisted Surgery (CAS) systems in the context of a risk management process. In one approach ConcurTaskTrees are applied to accomplish a hierarchical task analysis including temporal relations. In the other approach, based on the Cognitive Task Analysis method CPM-GOMS (Cognitive Perceptual Motor-Goals Operators Methods Selection Rules), a new technique for detecting potential contradictions and conflicts in the use of concurrent cognitive resources is generated. Within this model-based approach, extrinsic and intrinsic performance shaping factors are comprised, taking into account the specific context of modem surgical work systems. Additionally, a computer assisted usability analysis tool including the above-mentioned methods is developed to provide support for small and medium-sized enterprises in early stages of the design development process of risk sensitive Human-Machine-interfaces in medical systems.
