The processes of replacing, maintaining or adapting the existing user interfaces in Component-based Web Applications to new conditions requires a significative amount of efforts and resources for coordinating their different stakeholders. Additionally, there are many design alternatives, which can vary according to the context of use. Therefore, understanding the structure and composition of UIs and their contained elements can provide valuable insights for future adaptations. In this paper, we present a tool for discovering UI models in the source code of Component-based Web Applications, which could be used to support the reverse engineering process. Subsequently, we evaluated its capabilities of user Interface model extractions using open-source project TodoMVC. The evaluation process shows the main limitations of the JavaScript frameworks for creating an abstract UI model (i.e. technology independent model) for Web Applications.

Generating native user interfaces for multiple devices by means of model transformation

In the last years, the types of devices used to access information systems have notably increased using different operating systems, screen sizes, interaction mechanisms, and software features. This device fragmentation is an important issue to tackle when developing native mobile service front-end applications. To address this issue,we propose the generation of native user interfaces(UIs) by means of model transformations, following the modelbased user interface(MBUI) paradigm. The resulting MBUI framework, called LIZARD, generates applications for multiple target platforms. LIZARD allows the definition of applications at a high level of abstraction, and applies model transformations to generate the target native UI considering the specific features of target platforms. The generated applications follow the UI design guidelines and the architectural and design patterns specified by the corresponding operating system manufacturer. The objective is not to generate generic applications following the lowest-common-denominator approach, but to follow the particular guidelines specified for each target device. We present an example application modeled in LIZARD, generating different UIs for Windows Phone and two types of Android devices(smartphones and tablets).

user interfaces (UI) design is a complex and multi-faceted problem. It depends on devices, users and their environments and involves various stakeholders with different backgrounds. Moreover, user requirements are difficult to evaluate precisely upfront and require iterative design cycles based on trial and error. All this variability is complex and should be managed efficiently to ensure moderate design costs. One solution is to implement in the UI design process model-Driven Engineering (MDE) and Software Product Lines (SPL). However, current SPL approaches do not consider problems related to specific UI design models, notably the many concerns underlying them. We propose an SPL approach that supports the separation of concerns through multi-step partial configuration of UI features. The approach is implemented in our existing MDE UI generation framework.

user interfaces (UI) design is a complex and multi-faceted problem, owing to the ever increasing variability of the design options and the interaction context (devices, user profiles, and their environment). Moreover, UI design choices stand on users' needs elicitation, which are difficult to evaluate precisely upfront and require iterative design cycles based on trial and error. All this complex variability should be managed efficiently to ensure moderate design costs. In this article, we propose a variability management approach integrated into a UI rapid prototyping process, which involves the combination of model-Driven Engineering (MDE) and Software Product Lines. Our approach supports the separation of concerns through multi-step partial configuration of UI features, enabling each stakeholder of the UI design process to define the variability on the assets she manages. We have implemented this approach in our existing MDE UI generation Framework.

With ever more everyday objects becoming "smart" due to embedded processors and communication capabilities, the provisioning of intuitive user interfaces to control smart things is quickly gaining importance. We present a model-based interface description scheme that enables automatic, modality-independent user interface generation. user interface description languages based on our approach carry enough information to suggest intuitive interfaces while still being easily producible for developers. This is enabled by describing the atomic interactive components of a device and capturing the semantics of interactions with the device. We propose a taxonomy of abstract sensing and actuation primitives and present a smartphone application that can act as a ubiquitous device controller. An evaluation of the mobile application in a laboratory setup, home environments, and an educational setting as well as the results of a user study highlight the accessibility of the proposed scheme for application developers and its suitability for controlling smart devices.

Engineering user interfaces has long implied careful design carried out using formal methods applied by human experts and automated systems. While these methods have advantages, especially for creating interfaces that have the flexibility to adapt to users and situations, they can also be time consuming, expensive, and there are relatively few experts able to apply them effectively. In particular, many engineering methods require the construction of one or more models, each of which can only be created through many hours of work by an expert. In this keynote, I will explore how social and human computation methods can be applied to reduce the barriers to achieving user interface flexibility and ultimately to using engineering methods. In a first example, I will illustrate how groups of users can work together to modify and improve user interfaces through end-user programming examples from the CoScripter and Highlight projects. I will then discuss some initial work on using a crowd of novice workers to create models of existing user interfaces. I hope this keynote will inspire the engineering community to consider alternate approaches that creatively combine formal methods with the power of crowds.

Creating a Lightweight user Interface Description Language: An Overview and Analysis of the Personal Universal Controller Project

Over six years, we iterated on the design of a language for describing the functionality of appliances, such as televisions, telephones, VCRs, and copiers. This language has been used to describe more than thirty diverse appliances, and these descriptions have been used to automatically generate both graphical and speech user interfaces on handheld computers, mobile phones, and desktop computers. In this article, we describe the final design of our language and analyze the key design choices that led to this design. Through this analysis, we hope to provide a useful guide for the designers of future user interface description languages.

Designing service systems by bridging the "front stage" and "back stage"

Service management and design has largely focused on the interactions between employees and customers. This perspective holds that the quality of the "service experience" is primarily determined during this final "service encounter" that takes place in the "front stage." This emphasis discounts the contribution of the activities in the "back stage" of the service value chain where materials or information needed by the front stage are processed. However, the vast increase in web-driven consumer self-service applications and other automated services requires new thinking about service design and service quality. It is essential to consider the entire network of services that comprise the back and front stages as complementary parts of a "service system." We need new concepts and methods in service design that recognize how back stage information and processes can improve the front stage experience. This paper envisions a methodology for designing service systems that synthesizes (front-stage-oriented) user-centered design techniques with (back stage) methods for designing information-intensive applications.

Personalization of XML content browsing based on user preferences

Personalization of user interfaces for browsing content is a key concept to ensure content accessibility. In this direction, we introduce concepts that result in the generation of personalized multimodal user interfaces for browsing XML content. user requirements concerning the browsing of a specific content type can be specified by means of user-friendly description languages. According to these specifications, transformation rules are generated and applied to content to produce personalized user interfaces for browsing the content. With the emergence of the semantic Web and connected XML applications, such customized multimodal user interfaces can be helpful to many kinds of users, especially to individuals with various types of impairment.

The ongoing utilization of computer technologies in all areas of life leads to the development of smart environments comprising numerous networked devices and resources. Interacting in and with such environment's requires new interaction paradigms, abstracting from single interaction devices to utilize the environment as interaction space. Using a networked set of interaction resources allows supporting multiple modalities and new interaction techniques, but also requires the consideration of the set of devices and the adaptation to this set at runtime. While the generation of user interfaces based on UI models, although still challenging, has been widely researched, the runtime processing and delivery of the derivable user interfaces has gained less attention. Delivering distributed user interfaces while maintaining their interdependencies and keeping them synchronized is not a trivial problem. In this paper we present an approach to realize a runtime environment, capable of distributing user interfaces to a varying set of devices to support multimodal interaction based on a user interface model and the management of interaction resources.
