The availability of affordable cameras with additional depth sensor boosted the advances in the field of Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM). This area of research addresses creating a 3D representation of unknown environment by fusing sensor information. Whereas a coarse representation suffices for navigational purposes, the resulting 3D models are not accurate enough to allow rendering a visually pleasing video stream based on the gathered information, when applying a modelbasedvideo compression standard such as MPEG-4 Part 25. This publication focuses on increasing the accuracy of the created 3D models in order to improve the perceived quality when using model-based video coding and aims for performance comparable to hybrid video encoding.

The demands for wireless network bandwidth are rapidly increasing with the expanding number of mobile users as well as the diversification in types of services. Although fast-developing communication techniques continue to enlarge the network capacity, the growth rate of the huge amount of users' demands still outstrip the gains. Learning from the information cognition process of human brains, we introduce new methods to exploit priori information in wireless communications, uncovering a promising area of research in data compression. We showcase the video conversation afforded by such techniques as an example of multimedia communication and propose a model-based video coding scheme to improve the coding efficiency. Experiment results show that, compared to the conventional video compression codecs, the proposed scheme significantly reduce the data rate while guaranteeing high quality video transmission.

This paper describes a novel 3D model-based tracking algorithm allowing real-time recovery of 3D position, orientation and facial expressions of a moving head. The method uses a 3D Anthropometric Muscle-based Active Appearance model (3D AMB AAM), a feature-based matching algorithm, and an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) pose and expression estimator. Our model is an extension of the classical 2D AAM, and uses a generic 3D wireframe model of the face, based on two sets of controls: the anatomically motivated muscle actuators to model facial expressions and statistically-based anthropometrical controls to model different facial types.
