This article reports on an experiment to apply a model-driven approach for systems engineering in an industrial context. This experiment consisted of setting up a model-driven simulation environment for a maritime surveillance system. The simulation is fully based on three models, each conforming to a specific metamodel. We discuss the main advances given by model-driven orientated simulation for systems engineering. A number of Web design problems continue to arise, such as: (1) decoupling the various aspects of Web applications (for example, business logic, the user interface, navigation and information architecture;and (2) isolating platform specifics from the concerns common to all Web applications. In the context of a proposal for a model-driven architecture for Web applications, this paper identifies an extensive list of models aimed at providing a pool of proven solutions to these problems. The models span several levels of abstraction such as business, task, dialog, presentation and layout models. The proposed architecture will show how several individual models can be combined at different levels of abstraction into heterogeneous structures, which can be used as building blocks in the development of Web applications.

model-driven architecture (MDA) brings benefits to software development, among them the potential for connecting software models with the business domain. This paper focuses on the upstream or Computation-Independent model (CIM) phase of MDA. Our contention is that, whilst there are many models and notations available within the CIM phase, those that are currently popular and supported by the Object Management Group (OMG) may not be the most useful notations for business analysts nor sufficient to fully support software requirements and specification. Therefore, with specific emphasis on the value of the Business Process modelling Notation (BPMN) for business analysts, this paper provides an example of a typical CIM approach before describing an approach that incorporates specific requirements techniques. A framework extension to MDA is then introduced, which embeds requirements and specification within the CIM, thus further enhancing the utility of MDA by providing a more complete method for business analysis.

Empirical study on the effectiveness and efficiency of model-driven architecture techniques

Previous studies have reported conflicting opinions on the feasibility of model-driven architecture (MDA). Studies have investigated the mechanics of MDA, but few have examined its effectiveness and efficiency from a developer's perception. This study conducted empirical research in which a system was implemented by subjects using MDA;afterward, evaluated its perceived efficiency and effectiveness. In the model construction phase, Unified modeling Language and Object Constraint Language were perceived as effective and efficient. In the model transformation phase, the query/view/transformation standard was perceived as marginally efficient rather than effective, and the round-trip engineering phase was not perceived as effective or efficient. These findings are explained using 12 themes identified in subjects' opinions. This study may help scholars understand the importance of efficiency and effectiveness on MDA techniques and facilitate the development of more acceptable and practical MDA.

OCL2Trigger: Deriving active mechanisms for relational databases using model-driven architecture

Transforming integrity constraints into active rules or triggers for verifying database consistency produces a serious and complex problem related to real time behaviour that must be considered for any implementation. Our main contribution to this work is to provide a complete approach for deriving the active mechanisms for Relational Databases from the specification of the integrity constraints by using OCL. This approach is designed in accordance with the MDA approach which consists of transforming the specified OCL clauses into a class diagram into SQL:2003 standard triggers, then transforming the standard triggers into target DBMS triggers. We believe that developing triggers and plugging them into a given model is insufficient because the behaviour of such triggers is invisible to the developers, and therefore not controllable. For this reason, a DBMS trigger verification model is used in our approach, in order to ensure the termination of trigger execution. Our approach is implemented as an add-in too] in Rational Rose called OCL2Trigger. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

View-based model-driven architecture for enhancing maintainability of data access services

In modern service-oriented architectures, database access is done by a special type of services, the so-called data access services (DAS). Though, particularly in data-intensive applications, using and developing DAS are very common today, the link between the DAS and their implementation, e.g. a layer of data access objects (DAOs) encapsulating the database queries, still is not sufficiently elaborated, yet. As a result, as the number of DAS grows, finding the desired DAS for reuse and/or associated documentation can become an impossible task. In this paper we focus on bridging this gap between the DAS and their implementation by presenting a view-based, model-driven data access architecture (VMDA) managing models of the DAS, DAOs and database queries in a queryable manner. Our models support tailored views of different stakeholders and are scalable with all types of DAS implementations. In this paper we show that our view-based and model driven architecture approach can enhance software development productivity and maintainability by improving DAS documentation. Moreover, our VMDA opens a wide range of applications such as evaluating DAS usage for DAS performance optimization. Furthermore, we provide tool support and illustrate the applicability of our VMDA in a large-scale case study. Business Intelligence includes the concept of data warehousing to support decision making. As the ETL process presents the core of the warehousing technology, it is responsible for pulling data out of the source systems and placing it into a data warehouse. Given the technology development in the field of geographical information systems, pervasive systems, and the positioning systems, the traditional warehouse features become unable to handle the mobility aspect integrated in the warehousing chain. Therefore, the trajectory or the mobility data gathered from the mobile object movements have to be managed through what is called the trajectory ELT. For this purpose, the authors emphasize the power of the model-driven architecture approach to achieve the whole transformation task, in this case transforming trajectory data source model that describes the resulting trajectories into trajectory data mart models. The authors illustrate the proposed approach with an epilepsy patient state case study.

model-driven architecture (MDA) promotes the development of software systems through successive building and generation of models, improving the reusability of models. Applying the same principles to the area of Agent-Oriented Software Engineering (AOSE) advances the ideas behind MDA even more significantly, due to the inherent adaptivity of software agents We describe an appropriate set of models originating from requirements specification and transformable to models understandable and executable by agents thus demonstrating an Agent-oriented model-driven architecture (AMDA)approach. In AMDA, agents use hierarchical business knowledge models with business process rules at the top, business rules to control policy and logic in the middle and a base layer defining business concepts. Being externalised, knowledge is easily configurable by human beings and applied by software agents. A real case study is used to illustrate the process. The main advances over the object-oriented MDA are (i) the addition of component dynamics (ii) the use of agent-executable rule-based business models and (iii) a proposed higher level of abstraction with the direct representation of business requirements. Exploring a model-driven architecture (MDA) approach to health care information systems development

Objective: To explore the potential of the model-driven architecture (MDA) in health care information systems development. Methods: An MDA is conceptualized and developed for a health clinic system to track patient information. A prototype of the MDA is implemented using an advanced MDA tool. The UML provides the underlying modeling support in the form of the class diagram. The PIM to PSM transformation rules are applied to generate the prototype application from the model. Results: The result of the research is a complete MDA methodology to developing health care information systems. Additional insights gained include development of transformation rules and documentation of the challenges in the application of MDA to health care. Design guidelines for future MDA applications are described. The model has the potential for generalizability. The overall approach supports limited interoperability and portability. Conclusion: The research demonstrates the applicability of the MDA approach to health care information systems development. When properly implemented, it has the potential to overcome the challenges of platform (vendor) dependency, lack of open standards, interoperability, portability, scalability, and the high cost of implementation. Towards agent-oriented model-driven architecture

model-driven architecture (MDA) supports the transformation from reusable models to executable software. Business representations, however, cannot be fully and explicitly represented in such models for direct transformation into running systems. Thus, once business needs change, the language abstractions used by MDA (e.g. object constraint language/action semantics), being low level, have to be edited directly. We therefore describe an agent-oriented MDA (AMDA) that uses a set of business models under continuous maintenance by business people, reflecting the current business needs and being associated with adaptive agents that interpret the captured knowledge to behave dynamically. Three contributions of the AMDA approach are identified: (1) to Agent-oriented Software Engineering, a method of building adaptive Multi-Agent Systems;(2) to MDA, a means of abstracting high-level business-oriented models to align executable systems with their requirements at runtime;(3) to distributed systems, the interoperability of disparate components and services via the agent abstraction.
