Customizing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems can require implementing new modules adding support for processes not considered by the ERP vendor. Since customizing can account for a large portion of the budget in ERP introduction projects, in this work, we aim at increasing programming productivity in this area. As case study, we introduce a model-driven approach to developing ERP modules for Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central (BC) based on our Domain-Specific Language (DSL) modAL. Besides the DSL, we present accompanying development tools allowing to generate runnable modules from modAL specifications. We evaluate our approach based on a usability test conducted among BC developers. The results suggest that our model-driven approach is beneficial.

model-driven software engineering (MDSE) has emerged as a popular and commonly used method for designing software systems in which models are the primary development artifact over the last decade. MDSE has resulted in the trend toward further automating the software process. However, the generation of test cases from user requirements still lags in reaching the required level of automation. Given that most user requirements are written in natural language, the recent advances in natural language processing (NLP) provide an opportunity to further automate the test generation process. In this paper, we exploit the advances in MDSE and NLP to generate abstract test cases from user requirements written in structured natural language and the respective data model. We accomplish this by creating meta-models for user requirements and abstract test cases and defining the appropriate transformation rules. To support this transformation, helper methods are defined to extract the relevant information from user requirements related to testing. To show the feasibility of the approach, we developed a prototype and conducted a case study with use cases and test cases from a Payroll Management System.

High availability of automation systems is one of the main goals for the companies from all industrial branches. To achieve and maintain this high availability, the condition monitoring of the automation systems is an essential building block. However, as automation systems become increasingly equipped with numerous mechanical, electrical, and software components, creating a condition monitoring solution is becoming more and more challenging and requires knowledge from multiple engineering disciplines. Today, creating a condition monitoring solution is mostly based on the experience and preferences of the developers without a systematic and interdisciplinary method. Today, methods and tools supporting an interdisciplinary development exist. However, they do not fully consider condition monitoring relevant information. In addition, tools that increase software productivity and ease the adjustment of condition monitoring software are lacking. The main goal of this paper is to narrow the condition monitoring expertise gap by proposing convenient, systematic, and automated techniques to support the development of condition monitoring solutions from their design to their implementation. To achieve this goal, we propose an extension of the CONSENS systems engineering method to face issues caused in the design phase. By adopting a model-driven development (MDD) approach, we propose a Domain-Specific Language (DSL) for condition monitoring that promotes increased understandability, and automation during the software implementation phase.

To support the vision of Industry 4.0 and smart factories, manufacturing companies need to evolve their machines towards intelligent, connected cyber-physical systems (CPS). software is at the heart of these digital transformation processes. OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) is an industrial standard for horizontal and vertical communication of CPS. The adoption of OPC UA has a significant impact on the design of industrial production systems and on the development process. In this paper, we report on our experiences of migrating a heterogeneous software stack of a series machine production company to OPC UA. We show that automated approaches (i.e., static code analysis, code generation, and documentation generation) are the foundation for a holistic approach for working with OPC UA across different system layers and development teams. We show the advantages of using Swift as the programming language for behaviours on the Pepper and Nao robots as used with the RoboCup Standard Platform League and the RoboCup@Home - Social Standard Platform. We show that Swift is not only incorporating modern features of object-oriented programming and functional programming, but is also now a stable systems programming language that enables both high-level development as well as fine hardware control. Deterministic memory management makes Swift suitable for real-time, embedded systems, and thus for robotic applications. Moreover, we show in this paper we can apply model-driven software-development by deploying behaviours coded as executable arrangements of logic-labelled finite-state machines (LLFSMs). We also show LLFSMs are not only suitable for reactive architectures, but also for deliberative architectures.

Industry 4.0 processes have often varying requirements. A service robot and a team of service robots respectively represent a flexible resource. That means, it possesses variability that can possibly be configured in such a way that it is able to fulfill the requirements of industry 4.0 processes. Determining whether that is the case and how that has to happen is an important part of variability management. Based on a model-driven general method for variability management in a robotics software ecosystem, we present here a concrete use case (model) in which we allocate for an order picking task with specific time requirements either a single fitting service robot or a collaboration of two fitting service robots. Relevant properties of the service robots considered are both functional (are the capabilities to execute the tasks available?) as well as non-functional (the desired velocity parameterization while executing the individual navigation sub tasks limited by the respective maximum speed of a service robot).

software failures that demonstrate violations of human values can result in financial losses, reputation damages and social implications. Therefore, integrating human values into software is vital to satisfy stakeholder needs. However, developing methodological approaches that allow systematic integration of human values throughout the software development life cycle is an open challenge. This paper proposes the Continual Value(s) Assessment (CVA) framework that uses extended goal and feature modeling techniques to support systematic integration, tracing and evaluation of human values in software systems. The CVA framework prescribes (i) brainstorming of value implications of system features based on conventional system artefacts and (ii) the expansion of the existing set of system features to better serve stakeholder values expectations. In a pilot study, we use an emergency alarm system for the elderly to demonstrate the feasibility of the framework. We further discuss the challenges we faced while applying the framework and present the lessons learned from the pilot study.

MDSSED: A safety and security enhanced model-driven development approach for smart home apps

Context: With the popularization of smart home devices, people rely more on automation functions provided by smart home apps. This increases the attack surface for safety and security threats. Many of these threats are at the interaction level, caused by unintended or malicious interactions between ***: Most of the current studies focus on identifying unsafe interactions between smart home apps by code analysis. To the best of our knowledge, none of the existing studies focuses on enhancing the safety and security of smart home apps under interaction threats in the design phase. To fill this gap, this paper presents MDSSED, a safety and security enhanced model-driven development approach for smart home ***: First, this paper identifies eleven types of interaction threats faced by smart home apps. Second, the MDSSED profile is proposed to support modeling smart home apps using UML. Third, the MDSSED prototype tool is developed to generate threat models and corresponding safety and security properties automatically. Then, the safety and security properties are automatically verified by model checking. Finally, the MDSSED tool automatically converts the UML models to the Samsung SmartThings ***: To evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of MDSSED, this paper uses the benchmarks in existing state-of-the-art studies. The results show that MDSSED not only identified the safety and security problems in the existing benchmarks but also pointed out vulnerabilities of apps under other interaction threats identified in this ***: To the best of our knowledge, MDSSED is the first model-driven development approach that supports the automatic verification of the safety and security properties of smart home apps under interaction threats. The accuracy, practicality, and efficiency of MDSSED are corroborated by experiments. The source code of the MDSSED tool and the experimental data are available online.1

Technological advances and increasing customer need for highly customized products have triggered a fourth industrial revolution. A digital revolution in the manufacturing industry is enforced by introducing smart devices and knowledge bases to form intelligent manufacturing information systems. One of the goals of the digital revolution is to allow flexibility of smart factories by automating shop floor changes based on the changes in input production processes and ordered products. In order to make this possible, a formal language to describe production processes is needed, together with a code generator for its models and an engine to execute the code on smart devices. Existing process modeling languages are not usually tailored to model production processes, especially if models are needed for automatic code generation. In this paper we propose a research on Industry 4.0 manufacturing using a Domain-Specific modeling Language (DSML) within a model-driven software development (MDSD) approach to model production processes. The models would be used to generate instructions to smart devices and human workers, and gather a feedback from them during the process execution. A pilot comparative analysis of three modeling languages that are commonly used for process modeling is given with the goal of identifying supported modeling concepts, good practices and usage patterns.

Induced by the last evolutionary step of systems, the virtualization and decentralization of systems is thriving leading to more complex systems. This causes the system behavior described by models to be split into additional models, creating gaps. As a result, we present a novel approach that combines model artifacts describing the architecture of a system to recover the complete view of a system's behavior. Our design relies on model transformation to create a consistent model basis to enable cross-model connections. The combining process is carried out in two phases. First, an expert defines cross-model connections mapping behavioral models onto structural models. Second, these connections are used to derive direct connections between behavioral models to bridge the gap that emerged.
