The eXtensible Visualization Components Markup Language (XVCML) was developed in order to ensure the sustainability of visualization solutions. Therefore, XVCML follows the model-driven software development (MDSD) approach: It enables technology independent modeling of visualization solutions whereas those models are compliant to a formal metamodel. XVCML was enhanced by a mean to express arbitrary routines using Executable UML. Since we realized the latter aspect only as a first proof of concept, this part of XVCML lacks a formal metamodel-a requirement for MDSD. This paper seizes on this topic so much that a Domain Specific Language, which enables the creation of Executable UML models, will be worked out in the context of MDSD. Therefore, this paper explains the required foundations for the subject matter at hand before it presents the way of proceeding towards a model-driven approach with XVCML.

In order to solve the problems of description and verification of semantic properties in model driven development, process algebra is introduced on the basis of extending typed category theory. A unified semantic description framework is established for the description and transformation of component-based software models, as well as the maintenance and verification of semantic properties in the process of model transformation. Category diagram is used to describe the semantics of architecture model, and typed morphism implies the dependency relationship between component objects, and typed functor is used to describe the mappingmechanism before and aftermodel transformation. Application research shows that the framework well follows the essence and process requirements of model-driven development, and provides a new guidance framework for understanding, cognitive learning and promotion of software development research on the basis of model transformation.

model-driven software development (MDSD) is gaining access to the software development market, even if some of our colleagues are still reluctant to techniques like code generation from models and model transformations. Convincing the skeptics can be done by showing how and when to apply MDSD in the right way. This paper is a case study on applied MDSD, with a focus on code generation. We describe in detail how to generate code for a large model base, and how this increases flexibility and reduces development time. We explain in detail several templates for generating a C#-API from Ecore models, including event propagation and serialization code. Additionally, we show how to model additional features for existing models, and how to combine models using the C#-feature of partial classes for the generation of code, allowing us to merge stable models with ad-hoc extensions.

Industry 4.0 processes have often varying requirements. A service robot and a team of service robots respectively represent a flexible resource. That means, it possesses variability that can possibly be configured in such a way that it is able to fulfill the requirements of industry 4.0 processes. Determining whether that is the case and how that has to happen is an important part of variability management. Based on a model-driven general method for variability management in a robotics software ecosystem, we present here a concrete use case (model) in which we allocate for an order picking task with specific time requirements either a single fitting service robot or a collaboration of two fitting service robots. Relevant properties of the service robots considered are both functional (are the capabilities to execute the tasks available?) as well as non-functional (the desired velocity parameterization while executing the individual navigation sub tasks limited by the respective maximum speed of a service robot).

Polymorphism is a foundational concept within the object-oriented paradigm and is a feature of any mainstream object-oriented language that supports reusability and abstraction in software designs. With fUML being a standard specification of execution semantics of UML activity diagrams, it defines functionalities to simulate polymorphic behavior within such model executions. fUML only provides a simple standard implementation for simulating dynamic polymorphism at run-time. This default implementation does not meet the criteria of polymorphism as it is well-known and established by most mainstream object-oriented programming languages over the last decades, nor does it comply with the constraints for method overriding imposed by the original UML specification. However, fUML offers extension capabilities to add user-defined behavior for semantic variation points like polymorphism handling. This paper presents an extension of fUML execution semantics, enabling refined and more sophisticated simulation of polymorphism for executable UML models to comply with UML and the general understanding and functioning principles of polymorphic behavior within the object-oriented paradigm.

Companies need to rethink business processes, infrastructures, technologies, staff, etc. according to new demands, strategic goals, and changes in their environment. Information System evolution has been supported by the reengineering process. Since the models are now part of an increasing number of engineering processes and model-driven software development is a well-established paradigm to support information systems, the reengineering process could be improved with the incorporation of the model-driven development paradigm. This paper presents a model-driven organisational reengineering framework to support organisational improvement. The main idea is to get the most out of the existing proposals in model-driven development for the reengineering process (reverse engineering, improvement processes, and forward processes). Methods, techniques, model-driven tools, and perspectives for analysing information systems at a high level of abstraction are presented as a part of this proposal. A reference framework for the reengineering process is established to provide a consistent set of concepts that support the proposed framework. An illustrative example is introduced to present the feasibility of the proposal. The example illustrates the SuperStationery Co. case in order to present a reengineering process to align an existing desk application with a web application that fulfils the strategic goals of the company. Finally, we conclude with an analysis and discussion about lessons learned and future works.

This paper discusses realisation aspects and limitations of optical least-resolution sensors with less than 1k pixels to fill the gap between a light barrier and common smart cameras. The capability of the proposed hard-and software-architecture is demonstrated by an industrial example application in conjunction with model-driven software development which aim is to locate mechanical components for robot guidance.

Bidirectional incremental model transformations are crucial for supporting round-trip engineering in model-driven software development. A variety of domain-specific languages (DSLs) have been proposed for the declarative specification of bidirectional transformations. Unfortunately, previous proposals fail to provide the expressiveness required for solving practically relevant bidirectional transformation problems. To address this shortcoming, we propose a layered approach: On the declarative level, a bidirectional transformation is specified concisely in a small and light-weight external DSL. From this specification, code is generarated into an object-oriented framework, on top of which the behavior of the transformation may be complemented and adapted in an imperative internal DSL. An evaluation with the help of a well-known transformation case demonstrates that this layered hybrid approach is both concise and expressive, and also scalable.

Data mining techniques are making their entrance in nowadays companies, allowing business users to take informed decisions based on their available data. However, these business experts usually lack the knowledge to perform the analysis of the data by themselves, which makes it necessary to rely on experts in the field of data mining In an attempt to solve this problem, we previously studied the definition of domain-specific languages, which allowed to specify data mining processes without requiring experience in the applied techniques. The specification was made through high-level language primitives, which referred only to familiar concepts and terms from the original domain of the data. Therefore, technical details about the mining processes were hidden to the final user. Although these languages present themselves as a promising solution, their development can become a challenging task, incurring in costly endeavours. This work describes a development ecosystem devised for the generation of these languages, starting from a generic perspective that can be specialized into the details of each domain.

Current model-driven software development (MDSD) approaches struggle when modeling context-dependent and dynamic systems, as their underlying metamodels cannot capture context-dependent concepts and relations. By contrast, role-based modeling has been studied for more than 35 years as a promising paradigm to model context-dependent and dynamic systems. Although some approaches have considered the application of roles on the metamodel level, no approach employed a contextual and relational role-based metamodel as the basis of a modeling framework. To remedy this, we employ the Compartment Role Object model (CROM) which is a contextual and relational role-based modeling language, as the underlying metamodel of a novel Role-based modeling Framework (RMF). In particular, our framework is able to generate inter-operable Java source code that permits the programmatic creation, manipulation, and persistence of role-based models. We illustrate the applicability of RMF by modeling a small system with context-dependent concepts and relations, generating corresponding Java source code, and employing it to load, manipulate, and store role-based models.
