This method is focused on the capture of requirements for transformations in such a way that guides the development and the documentation of model transformations. Requirements are expressed by means of test crises that: can be automatically validated. The proposal has been applied to the MOSKitt open source CASE tool in all industrial scenario.

The following discusses a feasibility review being carried out for the use of natural language processing in the context of capturing model-to-model transformations in visual models, in particular, the extraction of information from text labels in BPMN and UML notations. Three significant tasks that the paper aims at taking care of include the extraction of verb/noun relationships, parsing conjunctive/disjunctive statements, and distinguishing abbreviations and acronyms. The current state of the art of NLP tools - such as CoreNLP, Stanford Stanza, Flair, Spacy, AllenNLP, BERT, and ELECTRA - coupled with some custom models, such as BERT-BiLSTM-CRF and ELMo, has resulted in these benchmarks. This system uses a BiLSTM-CRF tagging model trained on augmented data to do well on classes where the other models are confused. The model's performance is good in extracting noun and verb phrases irrespective of the recognition of words present in the shorttext labels, which are used in most of the UML and BPMN models. This study also raises challenges in the detection of abbreviations and acronyms and in processing conjunctive and disjunctive statements. Experimental results note that although Stanza-based implementation excels in the extraction of phrases and conjunctive phrase processing, the BERT-BiLSTM-CRF model is outdone in the detection of verb phrases. This goes a long way to show that, as promising as deep learning techniques are, they still bear their flaws but can be improved upon for application in different domains in NLP. © 2025 IEEE.

Colouring: execution, debug and analysis of QVT-relations transformations through coloured Petri nets

QVT is the standard language sponsored by the OMG to specify model-to-model transformations. It includes three different languages, being QVT-relations (QVT-R) the one with higher-level of abstraction. Unfortunately, there is scarce tool support for it nowadays, with incompatibilities and disagreements between the few tools implementing it, and lacking support for the analysis and verification of transformations. Part of this situation is due to the fact that the standard provides only a semi-formal semantics for QVT-R. In order to alleviate this situation, this paper provides a semantics for QVT-R through its compilation into coloured Petri nets. The theory of coloured Petri nets provides useful techniques to analyse transformations (e.g. detecting relation conflicts, or checking whether certain structures are generated or not in the target model) as well as to determine their confluence and termination given a starting model. Our semantics is flexible enough to permit the use of QVT-R specifications not only for transformation and check-only scenarios, but also for model matching and model comparison, not covered in the original standard. As a proof of concept, we report on the use of CPNTools for the execution, debugging, verification and validation of transformations, and on a tool chain (named Colouring) to transform QVT-R specifications and their input models into the input format of CPNTools, as well as to export and visualize the transformation results back as models.

Introducing requirements traceability support in model-driven development of web applications

In this work, we present an approach that introduces requirements traceability capabilities in the context of model-driven development of Web applications. This aspect allows us to define model-to-mode I transformations that not only provide a software artifact of lower abstraction (as model-to-model transformations usually do) but also to provide feedback about how they are applied. This feedback helps LIS to validate whether transformations are correctly applied. In particular, we present a model-to-model transformation that allows LIS to obtain navigational models of the Web engineering method OOWS from a requirements model. This transformation is defined as a set of mappings between these two models that have been implemented by means of graph transformations. The use of graph transformations allows us to develop a tool-supported strategy for applying mappings automatically. In addition, mechanisms for tracing requirements are also included in the definition of graph transformations. These mechanisms allow us to link each conceptual element to the requirements from which it is derived. In particular, we focus on tracing requirements throughout the navigational model, which describe the navigational structure of a Web application. To take advantage of these traceability mechanisms, we have developed a tool that obtains traceability reports after applying transformations. These reports help us to Study aspects such as whether or not requirements are all supported. the impact of changing a requirement, or how requirements are modelled. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. VigilAgent is a methodology for the development of agent-oriented monitoring applications that uses agents as the key abstraction elements of the involved models. It has not been developed from scratch, but it reuses fragments from Prometheus and INGENIAS methodologies for modelling tasks and the ICARO framework for implementation purposes. As VigilAgent intends to automate as much as possible the development process, it exploits. model transformation techniques are one of the key aspects of the model-driven development approach. A model-to-model transformation is used to facilitate the interoperability between Prometheus and INGENIAS methodologies. Also, a model-to-text transformation is performed to generate ICARO code from the INGENIAS model. A case study based on access control is used to illustrate the fundamentals of the model-to-model and model-to-text transformations implemented in VigilAgent.

The article is related to the problem of sustainable flexibility of a domain-specific language (DSL) in response to evolution of the application domain and users' capabilities. We offer a solution of that problem based on a particular model-driven approach. We propose to create a DSL structure from the domain-semantic-model (DSM) through the so-called semantic projection mechanism. The semantic projection is an operation, which is conducted over DSM. The result of the projection is a fragment of DSM, which describes the semantic model of a particular DSL dialect. We suggest to apply a group of model-to-model (M2M) transformations for practical implementation of semantic projections and producing corresponding DSL artefacts. We demonstrate the application of the proposed approach by the example in railway allocation domain.

Data standards are a powerful, real-world tool for enterprise interoperability, yet there exists no rigorous methodology for selecting among alternative standards approaches. This paper is a first step toward creating a detailed engineering basis for choosing among standards approaches. We define a specific sub-problem within a community's data sharing challenge, and focus on it in depth. We describe the major choices (kinds of standards) applied to that task, examining tradeoffs. We present characteristics of a data sharing community that one should consider in selecting a standards approach-such as relative power, motivation level, and technical sophistication of different participants-and illustrate with real-world examples. We then show that one can state simple decision rules (based on engineering experience) that system engineers without decades of data experience can apply. We also comment on the methodology used, extracting lessons (e.g., "negative rules are simpler") that can be used in similar analyses on other issues.

modelling and simulation are techniques instrumental in the engineering and design of complex systems. The reason is that both these techniques can anticipate possible failures when corrections are less costly to incorporate. Nevertheless, a correct behaviour is no guarantee, especially with software systems and their ubiquitous modelling notation: state machines. Correctness cannot be guaranteed because semantic gaps result from (1) abstractions in modelling and (2) ambiguities in simulation. Formal verification of a model may thus imply little about the correctness of the implementation. This situation is all the more serious with the emergence of model-Driven Software Engineering and its penetration in the instrumentation of cyber-physical systems, where verification of time-domain properties of systems is now paramount. We use logic-labelled finite-state machines (LLFSMs), a formalism with a precise semantics. We introduce both model-to-model and model-to-text transformations from LLFSMs to either programming languages or formal-specification languages for model checkers with minimal semantic gaps. We describe a transformation in the Atlas Transformation Language (ATL), producing modules of the NuSMV model checker. The time complexity of this transformation is linear in the total number of states of an arrangement of LLFSMs. The transformation is so faithful that the model checker itself can be used as the execution engine of the LLFSMs models.

Reengineering of an existing information system can be carried out: to improve its maintainability, to migrate to a new technology, to improve quality or to prepare for functional enhancement. An important phase of a data-oriented software system reengineering is a database reengineering process and, in particular, its subprocess - a database reverse engineering process. The reverse engineering process contains two main phases: data structure extraction and data structure conceptualization. In the paper we present a blueprint of a model-driven approach to database reengineering process that is one of the results of our research project on model-driven intelligent systems for software system development, maintenance and evolution. Within that process hereinafter we focus on the data structure conceptualization process and propose a model-driven approach to data structure conceptualization. Proposed process is based on model-to model transformations implemented by means of Atlas Transformation Language.

It is important to manage traceability between requirements and other artifacts, including stakeholders, sources, and system development elements. Requirements are often expressed independently from those artifacts using textual and model approaches. This fact makes hard and tedious the inference of trace links between them. This paper proposes a new Domain-Specific Language (DSL), called REQDL, for describing requirements, and at the same time, capturing bi-directional traceability data, which concerns especially SYSML modeling elements. Using REQDL expressions, we aim at assisting the traceability operation by applying a model-to-model transformation of both REQDL and SYSML constructs. The main result is the generation of requirements trace models, which incorporate intention and viewpoint concepts in conformance with a predefined trace metamodel. We use a car cooling system to illustrate the paper contributions.
