Classifying model-view-controller Software Applications Using Self-Organizing Maps

The new era of information and the needs of our society require continuous change in software and technology. Changes are produced very quickly and software systems require evolving at the same velocity, which implies that the decision-making process of software architectures should be (semi-)automated to satisfy changing needs and to avoid wrong decisions. This issue is critical since suboptimal architecture design decisions may lead to high cost and poor software quality. Therefore, systematic and (semi-)automated mechanisms that help software architects during the decision-making process are required. Architectural patterns are one of the most important features of software applications, but the same pattern can be implemented in different ways, leaving to results of different quality. When an application requires to evolve, knowledge extracted from similar applications is useful for driving decisions, since quality pattern implementations can be reproduced in similar applications to improve specific quality attributes. Therefore, clustering methods are especially suitable for classifying similar pattern implementations. In this paper, we apply a novel unsupervised clustering technique, based on the well-known artificial neural network model Self-Organizing Maps, to classify model-view-controller (MVC) pattern from a quality point of view. Software quality is analyzed by 24 metrics organized into the categories of Count/Size, Maintainability, Duplications, Complexity, and Design Quality. The main goal of this work is twofold: to identify the quality features that establish the similarity of MVC applications without software architect bias, and to classify MVC applications by means of Self-Organizing Maps based on quality metrics. To that end, this work performs an exploratory study by conducting two analyses with a dataset of 87 Java MVC applications characterized by the 24 metrics and two attributes that describe the technology dimension of the application. Web-based expert system development has been considered as complex, multidisciplinary and knowledge driven process. This paper presents a framework for development of web-based expert system with integrated approach of MAS-CommonKADS agent-oriented methodology, model-view-controller (MVC) architecture and web applications optimization strategies to deal with complexity of development and to achieve high usability. Study will guide in software engineering of developing such system with respect to Internet Technologies. Application of proposed framework for developing web-based expert system in sugarcane disorder diagnosis has been demonstrated. Privacy-Preserving Reengineering of model-view-controller Application Architectures Using Linked Data

When a legacy system's software architecture cannot be redesigned, implementing additional privacy requirements is often complex, unreliable and costly to maintain. This paper presents a privacy-by-design approach to reengineer web applications as linked data-enabled and implement access control and privacy preservation properties. The method is based on the knowledge of the application architecture, which for the Web of data is commonly designed on the basis of a model-view-controller pattern. Whereas wrapping techniques commonly used to link data of web applications duplicate the security source code, the new approach allows for the controlled disclosure of an application's data, while preserving non-functional properties such as privacy preservation. The solution has been implemented and compared with existing linked data frameworks in terms of reliability, maintainability and complexity.

Most web projects that are developed by software engineering students have at least one form and a controller, which contains a model of the data related to the manipulation of the forms, as well as a database. In other words, for each entity in the database, a view, a controller and a model must be created. Allowing to standardize the communication between the web project and the database. The main problem is that students do not know how to implement the model-view-controller (MVC) design pattern, due to this, their projects lack scalability, understanding, and include bad development practices. Therefore, this proposal consists of a CASE tool (Computer Aided Software Engineering) capable of generating an application based on an Entity-Relationship diagram, generating the model, the controller, and the user interface. The experiment with the application consists of measuring its usability through the Systems Usability Scale (SUS). For this, the Results indicate a good and acceptable evaluation according to the scales used (72.64 SUS points). The developed software allows students to understand the MVC design pattern clearly by being able to interact with the inputs and outputs of the system.

Command-oriented functional programs are currently structured in an ad hoc way that makes the development of multiple userinterfaces difficult and error prone, and makes it difficult to abstractly understand a program's command-oriented behavior. To rectify this, we propose a software architecture for such programs that we call functional model-view-controller (MVC), by a rough analogy with object-oriented MVC. In functional MVC, a program is structured as a model (domain-specific aspects), view (abstract user) and controller (command loops). In contrast to object-oriented MVC, a controller is active, consisting of a number of recursive functions. It calls its view to get user input and to display results to the user;it calls its model to do domain-specific work. To increase adaptability, a controller should be parameterized by its model and view, using a function or an ML-style functor. With this approach, one can write terminal and graphical views;one can also write views that do abstract scripting. One can understand and reason about a program's command-oriented aspects at a high-level of abstraction by focusing on the controller. Of particular note is the way we are able to allow computations of the model to be monitored and aborted by view. We illustrate our approach with a case study of a complete program, written in Standard ML, and using Concurrent ML and the eXene X window system toolkit.

In the context of crop model design for industrial purposes, this paper proposes a domain-specific modeling approach to provide a crop model factory for the modelers in agronomy. The authors' approach proposes to separate the concerns of representing the simulation process (process-based dynamics) and the plant data structure. They propose a refined and stabilized metamodel for the dynamics based on past preliminary work. This paper also explains how the model-view-controller design pattern can be applied to DSML environments to produce a more specialist-friendly interface. In addition, the authors propose a metamodeling usage of the model-view-controller offering the potential to develop a DSML for DSMLs design.

model Driven Development (MDD) of complex software systems can require manual adaptations of the generated artifacts. In fact, in order to cope with unforeseen requirements which are not completely satisfiable by means of the involved modeling languages, developer interventions could be needed. The optimal solution to deal with this issue, is based on the expressiveness improvement of the involved metamodels and refinement of the used model transformations. Nevertheless, these adaptations are not always possible or cost-effective especially if the new functionalities that have to be introduced affect only the single application being developed. This paper discusses and attempt to hand-tune the generated code by providing an approach supporting its merging with hand written modifications. For this purpose, the behaviour model of the system under study is considered to graphically specify the injection points where the modifications have to occur. The discussions are based on a running example consisting of a simple Web application.

A novel optimized sizing and management strategy of a grid-connected hybrid photovoltaic (PV)-solar-batterygroup system were proposed for the electrification of residential consumers in Northwest Africa (a case of Mauritania), and the influence of the state of the sky (clear, moderately overcast, and overcast) was analyzed according to the load flowing (LF) and the cycle charging (CC) strategies. In order to mitigate the pressure on the national grid, consolidate the consumer autonomy, minimize the cost of medium- and long-term consumption bills, and CO2-related emissions, a cartographic approach was conducted as the first attempt to map the electricity consumption potential for buildings in the city of Nouakchott (Mauritania) using a geo-referenced database. ArcGIS (R), HOMER Pro (R), and MATLAB (R) softwares were used for the establishment of the load profile, optimized sizing of the PV-batteries-group-grid system, and calculation of the lightness index, respectively. The LF strategy provided the best monitoring of the load throughout the day by minimizing the generator uptime. The techno-economic analysis revealed the values of cost of energy (COE) and net present cost (NPC) as follows: COE = $0.0549/kWh and NPC = $24,796 for the LF PV-batteries-grid strategy, COE = 0.0646 $/kWh and NPC = $23,380 for the CC PV-batteries-grid strategy, and COE = $0.17/kWh and NPC = $23,262 for the case of the grid on its own.

A language-driven approach for the design of interactive applications

In this paper we propose a language-driven approach for the high-level design of interactive applications architected according to the model-view-controller pattern. The approach is especially well-suited for applications that incorporate contents with sophisticated structures, and whose interactive behavior is driven by these structures. In our approach we characterize the structure of the contents stored in the applications' models with suitable domain-specific languages. Then we characterize the interactive behavior of these applications by assigning suitable operational semantics to these languages. The resulting designs are amenable to support rapid prototyping, exploration and early discovery of application features, systematic implementation using standard web-based technologies, and rational collaboration processes between domain experts and developers during production and maintenance. We exemplify the approach in the e-learning domain with a system for the production of Socratic tutors. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
