Current space operations simulation capabilities are limited and do not suffice to fulfill the requirements for military space mission areas. Therefore, a modeling and simulation as a service architecture for joint military space operations simulation is introduced. In this architecture, every military space operations mission area is addressed by at least one or more simulation services, which can be run independently or as composed with others. Our layered service-oriented modeling and simulation environment, namely the HAVELSAN Training and Experimentation Cloud, is the implementation of this architecture.

Among other requirements, in the field of modeling and simulation there is a need to build and run (co-) simulation models on-demand. Setting up, orchestrating and executing simulations should be easy, while additional features such as interaction interfaces open up a variety of applications. Being able to connect external components seamlessly to a running simulation allows for elaborate experiments. This paper describes the architecture and design of a simulation platform that is a part of a broader platform enabling evaluations of future mobility scenarios. Apache's Kafka platform for big data stream processing is used as a communication base in order to enable all these requirements, as well as for the coupling of different simulation tools forming a co-simulation. We give an overview of existing works regarding modeling and simulation as a service, before explaining our own approach. Therefore, the architecture, the interfaces, and the workflow of a simulation run is described. The approach is illustrated by a case study, which is used to measure the service's overhead.

MAMS: Mashup architecture with modeling and simulation as a service

The modeling and simulation (M&S) community has used Web service (WS) technologies to help with the increasing complexity of the applications. Although there are many Web APIs that could be useful for M&S applications, they are rarely used. One of the main reasons is that using M&S related WSs and open APIs makes it difficult to consider their integration for building complex M&S applications. Here we show how to simplify the development and integration process of such M&S applications by using a new architecture for web services Mashups, namely the Mashup Architecture for modeling and simulation (MAMS). MAMS is the first environment and architecture to integrate mashups and distributed simulation. MAMS provides means for a lightweight life cycle to develop, deploy, identify, select, integrate and execute varied M&S resources as services in the Cloud. modeling and simulation as a service (MSaaS) is based on the idea of simulation services deployed in any host device under demand. These services can be anything from a small plug-in to a full-scale system. The users and devices requesting the simulation can be placed anywhere. The whole MSaaS concept is based on modeling and simulation services that comply with simulation standards, are compliant with a certain level of security (multilevel security), and can interoperate and interact with other services or with the host device, in a seamless way. This article centers on the election of the deployment model of the services, already finished, inside the MSaaS model. That is, choosing the best way in which the services will be made available for the final user in a systemic and institutionalized way. The selection of the proper development model is one of the most critical activities in MSaaS that can determine the final success of the whole initiative. Starting from a finished model, the election of the best deployment model is discussed by considering how to control and guarantee the services in terms of quality of the software, security, and quality of the features.

Motivated by a wide range of applications, research on agent-based models of contagion propagation over networks has attracted a lot of attention in the literature. Many of the available software systems for simulating such agent-based models require users to download software, build the executable, and set up execution environments. Further, running the resulting executable may require access to high performance computing clusters. Our work describes an open access software system (NetSimS) that works under the "modeling and simulation as a service" (MSaaS) paradigm. It enables users to run simulations by selecting models and parameter values, initial conditions, and networks through a web interface. The system supports a variety of models and networks with millions of nodes and edges. In addition to the simulator, the system includes components that enable users to choose initial conditions for simulations in a variety of ways, to analyze the data generated through simulations, and to produce plots from the data. We describe the components of NetSimS and carry out a performance evaluation of the system. We also discuss two case studies carried out on large networks using the system. NetSimS is a major component within ***, a cyberinfrastructure for network science.

Defense planning is a crucial part of the defense process. It identifies the capabilities required for the future defense environment, analyzes the capability shortfalls, prioritizes them, and provides the fundamental inputs for their development. modeling and simulation may significantly contribute to the success of defense planning. However, neither the theory nor the tools are mature enough to fulfill the defense planning requirements. Various types of simulation tools, such as static, dynamic, deterministic, stochastic, closed, discrete, continuous, and symbiotic, in multiple levels of resolution and fidelity are needed to support the different stages and phases. The verification and validation of the models and the analysis of the input and output data are critical. Yet another challenge is that the uncertainties related to the contemporary defense scenarios are mostly not in aleatory but in the epistemic domain. In this paper, we briefly present a new computer-assisted defense planning process. Then, we introduce the service-oriented cloud approach for the modeling and simulation support to the process.

Architectural work for modeling and simulation combining the NATO Architecture Framework and C3 Taxonomy

To provide modeling and simulation functionality as services is strategically leveraged in the defense domain and elsewhere. To describe and understand the context, the ecosystem, wherein such services are used and interoperate with other services and capabilities, one needs tools that capture the simulation services themselves as well as the capability landscape they operate in. By using the NATO Consultation, Command, and Control (C3) Taxonomy to structure architecture design in the NATO Architecture Framework (NAF), cohesive descriptions of modeling and simulation capabilities within larger contexts can be given. We show how a basic seven-step approach may benefit architecture work for modeling and simulation at the overarching, reference, and target architectural levels;in particular for (1) hybrid architectures that embed simulation architectures within a larger service-oriented architecture and (2) for architectural design of simulation scenarios. Central to the approach is the use of the C3 Taxonomy as a repository for overarching architecture building blocks and patterns. We conclude that the promotion of technical functionality as capabilities in their own right helps delineate simulation environment boundaries, helps delineate services within and outside the boundary, and is an enabler for defining the service concepts in cloud-based approaches to modeling and simulation as a service (MSaaS).
