Effective conceptual modelling is critical for accurately representing the physical world in digital twin implementations, yet existing methods often lack comprehensive guidance or overlook key aspects like communication modelling. This research proposes the Entity-Relationship Digital Twin (ERDT) modelling method tailored for industrial digital twins. Building on established Entity-Relationship (ER) models, ERDT extends them with constructs for handling historical data, and defining security interfaces and data flows between physical and virtual components. The method provides a systematic process covering digital twin objective setting, physical component selection, conceptual entity definition, interface specification, and communication modelling. It emphasizes principles like encapsulation and separation of concerns to enhance maintainability. Evaluated against ISO 25010 quality criteria, ERDT demonstrates strengths in functional appropriateness, usability, portability, and maintainability while identifying opportunities for further improvement. A logistics case study illustrates applying the method to a real-world industrial scenario. By bridging conceptual modelling with software engineering best practices, ERDT facilitates developing robust, maintainable digital twins.

A proper inverter model is an important tool for system stability analysis and parameter design. A complete model is accurate, but computationally expensive. While some reduced-order models are available, they are inaccurate in certain situations, or lose generality as parameters change. The characteristics of these inverters are significantly different from those of synchronous machines with strong natural timescale separation. Although network dynamics and inner-loop dynamics are relatively fast, they seem to have an impact on power loops with slow dynamics, and neglecting them can lead to questionable results. In this study, the limitations of existing general models are demonstrated, and their applicability is analysed. To address the reduced-order precision problem, a process-simplified reduction method and an efficient reduced-order inverter model are proposed for microgrid applications. The developed model has higher precision and wider applicability while uncovering instability mechanisms and addressing other factors. Finally, the correctness of the theoretical analysis and the validity of the model reduction method are verified by comparative experiments.

Due to the diverse features of source-network-load-storage for a microgrid, the operation mode of grid-tied inverter is complicated. The grid net model would be cumbersome and difficult to carry out effective analysis based on uniform model of inverter in accordance with the traditional method. To meet the new IEC/TS 62989 microgrid standard, considering charging and discharging modes of storage unit, a benchmark equivalent model is proposed here by the simplification principle of cluster analysis. Then the microgrid can be divided into multiple source-network-load-storage subsystems based on the model, that helps to carry out the energy independence and modular control of the distributed power generation systems. The simplification of the microgrid module is designed according to the principle of cluster analysis. The simulation and experimental results are given to verify the validity of the model.

Aircraft electrification rises up the development of the electrical actuation systems. Airbus 380 is a typical more electrical aircraft featured with diverse electrical systems, such as the Local Electro-Hydraulic System (LEHS) for the actuation of the landing gear. Aircraft systems are frequently equipped with components provided by specialized manufacturers. However, component manufacturers usually offer only limited information, especially for their latest technology. This makes the system design challenging for easily establishing an object oriented model. This paper presents a system level modelling method with a study case of a Direct Drive Servo Valve (DDSV) in a LEHS. The modelling utilizes only a schematic diagram of the servo valve and its test-bench, as well as rough test results supplied by the component manufacturer but relies on no dimension data. A model for the valve is proposed based on existing literature. However, the simulation results demonstrated a mismatch with the manufacturer's test data. Therefore, the model was refined through adding sensor effects. This allowed the model to improve the agreement with all the manufacturer's test results. For a purchased servo valve with no detailed knowledge, its system level modelling method was proposed. Faced with limited component information, system designers can establish models by reviewing existing relevant models, adding characteristics from nonlinear effects and test-bench based on analysis and literature survey, and validating the model using test results.

The importance of modelling method Engineering is equally rising with the importance of Domain Specific Languages and individual modelling approaches. In order to capture the most relevant semantic primitives that address domain specific needs, it is necessary to involve both the method engineers as well as domain experts. Based on practical experience in business, more than twenty EU-projects and other research initiatives, this paper presents improved and extended version of a model-driven approach to support the design of a modelling method. The approach is evaluated by two projects in the context of e-Learning, and Business and IT-Cloud Alignment. The paper discusses the evaluation results and derived outlooks.

The development of an integration modelling method for manufacturing cell control systems

This paper addresses the need to develop an integration modelling method for the Cell level. The Cell level, which interfaces between the strategic factory level and the manufacturing equipment level in a CIM hierarchical model, is complex. To tackle complicated systems, especially considering a potential large amount of investment in resources, it is necessary to fully understand what needs to be done and how this could be achieved by the intended systems. To this end, a good modelling methodology is required as a way of specifying and describing the systems under consideration. However, most existing modelling methods are not specifically designed for modelling the Cell level but rather, principally, to address other levels of the CIM hierarchy, although requirements of Cell level modelling are covered in fragments of these methods. An integration method is therefore suggested as an appropriate means to deal with modelling problems at the Cell level. This paper will discuss the problems associated with, and the development of, an integration method in the modelling of cell control systems.

The accurate and efficient simulation of steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) is of great significance for its further application in civil engineering. Problems of existing modelling methods can be recognized as two points;(1) the integral model only simplified fibre contribution into the unified post-peak ductility in concrete element but cannot reflect the material variation caused by real fibre distribution, and (2) the separate model built the concrete matrix and fibre inclusions respectively, but the directly random fibre distributions still need to be refined based on the actual material. In this paper, based on the X-ray image recognition results from real SFRC material, a mathematical model of fibre distribution and orientation is proposed for SFRC simulation, and the detailed value distributions of geometrical parameters are optimized for convenience and accuracy of material modelling. In the geometrical extraction of near 4000 fibres from X-ray images, the whole comprehensive procedure of image processing, enhancement and recognition is presented with technologies like pixel semantic classification and Hough transform. With the proposed geometrical mathematical model, the modelling method that consists of multiple refined sampling is illustrated with mechanical applications. After the model verification by experimental comparison, the detailed contribution of steel fibre and the effect of fibre distribution refinement are discussed as well.

A comparison of importance of modelling method and sample size for mapping soil organic matter in Guangdong, China

Digital soil mapping (DSM) is the most widely used method for producing spatial information of soil organic matter (SOM). Accuracy of the information is generally determined by modelling methods and sample sizes used for DSM. However, different studies present different importance of modelling method and sample size on accuracy of DSM, while they do not explore various combinations of modelling method and sample size. Based on the studies, it is supposed that there exists an optimal combination of modelling method and sample size for producing information of SOM accurately and economically. With SOM data of 1861 soil samples collected in Guangdong, China, the present study first assessed importance of modelling method and sample size and then examined if an optimal combination of modelling method and sample size existed for the area. Six modelling methods were explored, while 12 sample sizes were used, ranging from 100 to 1200 with an interval of 100. For each size, 10 repeated samples were randomly taken from a data of 1311 samples which were randomly selected from all the 1861 soil samples based on the probability distribution of the SOM data. The results showed that, for small sample sizes, the modelling methods have a greater impact on accuracy of DSM. However, for large sample sizes, e.g., more than 1000, the sample sizes have a much greater impact. Due to the varying importance of modelling method and sample size, there exists an optimal combination of modelling method and sample size for spatial prediction of SOM in the area, i.e., the combination of regression kriging and a sample size of 800. Thus, for economically producing detailed and accurate information on spatial distribution of SOM, it is recommended that a series of modelling methods and sample sizes are tried to identify an optimal combination of modelling method and sample size.

Accurate modelling of the scroll expander via a mechanism-incorporated data-driven method

Accurate modelling of the scroll expander is essential for efficiency analysis and optimal control. In this study, we propose a mechanism-incorporated adaptive-network-based fuzzy inference system (MI+ANFIS) to establish the scroll expander model. In this method, to fully utilize the mechanism characteristics and improve the prediction performance, we firstly identify the mechanistic model parameters based on the least squares method. Then, the ANFIS is adopted to construct residual prediction model according to the residual errors from the mechanistic model. The final forecasting outputs of the MI+ANFIS model are obtained by combining the mechanistic model and the ANFIS model. Experiments on forecasting the volume flow rate and torque of the scroll expander are taken separately. To demonstrate the superiorities of the proposed MI+ANFIS, it is compared with several other popular models, including the ANFIS, the extreme learning machine (ELM), the back-propagation neural network (BPNN), and the support vector regression (SVR), while with the MI+ELM, the MI+BPNN and the MI+SVR. Experimental results indicated that the proposed MI+ANFIS exhibits higher accuracy and greater robustness due to the consideration of the mechanistic properties.

Towards understanding thermal-stiffness coupling modeling and active temperature control method of machine tool feed system

Thermal deformation of the feed system (FS) is a consequence of the intricate interplay between thermal and force loads. The frictional heating of the rolling elements in the ball screw nut pair (BSNP) and in the bearing group (BG) causes alterations in the preload of the components, which in turn affects the axial stiffness (AS) and results in thermal deformation of the ball screw (BS). Furthermore, the preload variations of the BSNP and BG also influence their heat generation power (HGP). A transient modelling method of thermal-stiffness coupling (TSC) for the FS is proposed to elucidate the influence mechanism of the coupling between the transient HGP, preload, AS and the transient temperature field of the BS during the feeding process. In addition, a thermally active temperature control (ATC) strategy for FS, based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, is proposed. This strategy dynamically determines the BS inlet oil temperature that minimizes thermal extension (TE) through iterative screening. The transient numerical simulation analyses of constant temperature control (CTC) and ATC under variable feed speed are performed utilizing the finite difference method, and the thermal characteristic experiment under the same running condition is also executed. The simulation and experimental results exhibit consistent trends with small deviations (Temperature field: max. 16.8 %;TE of BS: max. 18.5 % in the final stage;AS of FS: max. 6.3 %;Preload of the BSNP/ BG: max. 12.5 %/ 11.2 %). ATC demonstrates the ability to reduce the TE of the BS (max. 37.6 %) in comparison to CTC.
