An Improved Phasor Method for Modelling and Analysis of modular multilevel matrix converter

modular multilevel matrix converter ((MC)-C-3) has considerable application potential in motor driving and power systems, but its phasor model is rarely studied. This paper proposes a novel method for modelling and analysis of the (MC)-C-3 in the phasor domain. Firstly, an improved phasor method in matrix form is proposed for direct AC/AC MMC family. By including the frequency information into the phasor expression, it is capable of analysis towards interaction between AC variable groups with different frequencies. Secondly, based on the proposed phasor matrix method, the concept of two-dimensional phase-sequence is proposed to facilitate description and calculation of the AC variables in the 3-by-3 matrix-resembled circuit structure of (MC)-C-3. Network of each phase-sequence is also derived. With the proposed methods, calculation burden for modelling and analysis of the (MC)-C-3 is significantly reduced. Then, the phasor model of (MC)-C-3 considering the DC, fundamental frequency and 2(nd)-order harmonic components is established. Finally, validation results with time-domain simulation is provided.

Modern variable-speed drives must be able to deal with ride-through faults with dips of 70-90 % to ensure the continuity of the process without the energy store station discharge and carry out significant effects to its performance. So, the existent contingencies to such case are tripping-method from grid, robust DC-Link with higher capacitors and additional power electronic hardware. Nevertheless, they comprehend a common drawback for being costly in the industry. Therefore, the Power Loss Ride Through behaviour on variable-speed drives is an important feature which is a worst-case where the system can suffer dips near to 99% on grid. Recently, modular multilevel Cascade converters have been applied in Variable-Speed Drives applications due to their capability to operate at high-power rates and features such as enhanced fault-ride through capability during critical dip voltage (e.g., 99% of amplitude) in grid. Therefore, this paper presents a control strategy based on a transition mechanism between outer control loops on the nested control of a modular multilevel matrix converter drive with the aim to improve the Power Loss Ride-Through performance through keeping the energy store station uniform and stable. Simulation results obtained using PLECS software are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) is a competitive option in the fractional frequency transmission system (FFTS) application. Focusing on stability and power quality issues, this study firstly proposes a new mathematical model and control strategy. Different from the previous research, this control scheme is based on the frequency decoupling model of doubledqcoordinate transformation and the control of the sub-converter, which implements the frequency decoupling control and solves the frequency leakage problem. Subsequently, a complete state-space model and small-signal model of M3C are built for analysing small disturbance stability. On this basis, the optimisation of M3C in FFTS is studied, and an optimisation method based on particle swarm algorithm is proposed. This method can directly design the adaptive objective function according to the optimisation requirements of system control performance to simultaneously optimise all controller parameters of the system. After optimisation, the stability and dynamic performance of the system have been significantly improved. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control and optimisation is verified by the simulation results in MATLAB/ Simulink.

The modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) is a direct AC/AC converter which is suitable for medium-voltage high-power applications. However, the branch energy balancing control of the system appears more complicated because the converter suffers from serious low-frequency voltage oscillations in floating capacitors when the input/output frequencies of the system are similar or even identical. This problem could limit the converter in many applications such as full-frequency speed-drive. Therefore, this paper adopts a closed-loop decoupled control strategy and analyzes the significance of energy balance by constructing two independent circulation systems. Then the optimal design of injected circulating currents and common-mode voltage is proposed in order to minimize branch current stress and voltage fluctuations. The effectiveness of the proposed control and optimization structure is verified by M3C simulation model composed of 27 cells.

Fractional frequency transmission is a promising technology for medium distance offshore wind power transmission. The key component in the fractional frequency transmission system (EFTS) is the modular multilevel matrix converter ((MC)-C-3). It is regarded as the next generation AC/AC converter for high voltage and high power applications due to various advantages such as high-quality waveforms, scalability, and controllability. It is important to fully study its impact on the power network. The key to the understanding and impact is the development of a suitable model, which is the focus of this paper. A small signal model of the (MC)-C-3 taking into account the dynamics of the capacitor voltage, AC currents, and the control system is developed. Electrical quantities from both AC sides at different frequencies couple in the (MC)-C-3 since there is no DC link. The complicated nonlinear terms in ABC frame are isolated and transformed in DQ frame. The model is convenient to interface with the control system and external AC systems. Small signal analysis is carried out on the influence of the controller parameters and sub-module capacitance. The correctness of the proposed model is verified by comparing to a detailed electromagnetic transient model of the (MC)-C-3 simulated in RIDS.

The modular multilevel matrix converter has been proposed as a suitable option for high power applications such as flexible AC transmission systems. Among flexible AC transmission systems, the unified power flow controller stands out as the most versatile device. However, the application of the modular multilevel matrix converter has not been thoroughly analyzed for unified power flow controller applications due to the sophisticated control systems that are needed when its ports operate at equal frequencies. In this context, this paper presents a cascaded control structure for a modular multilevel matrix converter based unified power flow controller. The control is implemented in a decoupled reference frame, and it features proportional-integral external controllers and internal proportional multi-resonant controllers. Additionally, the input port of the modular multilevel matrix converter is regulated in grid-feeding mode, and the output port is regulated in grid-forming mode to provide power flow compensation. The effectiveness of the proposed vector control system is demonstrated through simulation studies and experimental validation tests conducted with a 27-cell 5 kW prototype.

During the last years, the modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) has been investigated due to its capacity tooperate in high voltage and power levels. This converter is appropriate for Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECSs), due to its advantages such as redundancy, high power quality, expandability and control flexibility. For Double-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) WECSs, the M3C has advantages additional benefits, for instance, high power density in the rotor, with a more compact modular converter, and control of bidirectional reactive power flow. Therefore, this paper presents a WECS composed of a DFIG and an M3C. The modelling and control of this WECS topology are described and analyzed in this paper. Additionally, simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of this proposal.

The modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) has been proposed as an appropriate alternative to driving high-power machines due to characteristics such as modularity, medium-voltage operation, high power quality, reliability. Nevertheless, the control of M3C is complicated, especially in variable-speed applications, because large voltage oscillations can be produced in the floating capacitors. Therefore, this paper presents a vector control system that allows decoupled regulation of the floating capacitors of the M3C, whereas Field Oriented Control (FOC) is applied to regulate an induction machine. The effectiveness of the proposed control system is validated through M3C simulation model composed of 63 power cells M3C driving a 1250 HP induction machine.

The modular multilevel matrix converter ((MC)-C-3) has been proposed as an appropriate alternative for high-power machines due to characteristics such as modularity, medium voltage operation, high power quality and reliability. However, complex control systems are needed when its ports operate at equal frequencies, and the application of the (MC)-C-3 in equal frequencies applications, such as Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS), can be restricted. Therefore, this paper presents a direct power control of an (MC)-C-3 for FACTS applications, including an enhanced control system to regulate the floating capacitor voltages, whereas the converter provides functions of FACTS. The effectiveness of the proposed control system is validated through simulations implemented in PLECS software.
